➊ POWER VOLTAGE-SWITCHING UNIT
(PVSU)
Power Management and Distribution for the United States Marine Corps LAV-C2
Building upon heritage in actuation motion control, Moog has enhanced capabilities with the addition
of vehicle electronics and a comprehensive understanding of how a vehicle functions, both internally
and externally. Recently, Moog designed and integrated the LAV-C2 next generation C4I system
solution for the United States Marine Corps.
Combines and modernizes the three most
common military ground-mobile power
handling LRUs (PDU, PSU, and VSU)
and is an easily integrated, full military
environment qualified power handling
solution for legacy platform upgrades
and new platform designs.
As a command and control vehicle upgrade, Moog provided a complete 3D CAD model, mechanized
all new subsystems, and designed the entire power management distribution system consisting of
11 boxes. As a result, a space-efficient and operator friendly layout for internal and external Line
Replaceable Units (LRUs) and crew storage items was created. Moog designed all new vehicle cabling
and performed grounding, shielding and bonding, and Electromagnetic Capability/Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI/EMC) design.
Data Pipeline Solutions
Moog has developed innovative products and systems to transfer data and video signals within a
military vehicle. Moog data management solutions utilize these technologies:
➋ DATA ACQUISITION UNIT
• Multiplexing – Used to combine data and video signals from several sources into serial data
stream for passage across the rotary joint assembly. Moog utilizes various types of multiplexers,
including wavelength and time division.
• Data Compression – Used to either increase the throughput across the rotary joint assembly
without dictating a major shift in technology, decrease the cost of the rotary joint, or a combination
of both. Moog data compression solutions have low latency, high sampling rates, better and
adjustable quality.
• Switching/Bridging/Routing – Moog SmartNode™ technology allows the proper routing of data to
➌ SLIP RING
its intended location on the other side of the rotary joint while minimizing latency. It utilizes the
full bandwidth of the pipeline while establishing priorities and can be configured with the ability to
sense loss and re-route the data via another waveguide through the rotary joint.
• High Bandwidth Storage Array – Uses solid-state electronics that offers many advantages over
magnetic rotary drives, including low power usage, read and write speeds, higher reliability,
and low noise.

versatile testing to get results faster.
The Moog Turret Test System is based on a high performance 6-Degrees of Freedom (6-DOF)
electric motion system with powerful test software to simulate test tracks and test performance of
the turret station. Customers can install an actual turret or remote weapon station on the motion
system, up to 24,000 kg or 53,000 lb, to meet specific excursions, velocities, or accelerations. The
Moog Replication Software Module has been developed to accurately simulate vehicle movements
as recorded on the test track.
Simulation
In training centers worldwide, Moog motion systems provide the highest level of performance

Conversions
and Upgrades
Conversions and Upgrades
Background
Moog works closely with its customers, vehicle manufacturers and the armed forces to upgrade, convert, and reset existing assets. Moog engineers are
experts in both electromechanical (EM) and electrohydraulic (EH) motion control systems and technologies, providing system upgrades to meet strict space,
weight, and power constraints.
Manufacturing facilities at Moog are sized to handle large conversion and upgrade programs for combat vehicles, turrets, missile launchers, and any other
military asset requiring mission-critical motion control improvements. The unique modeling capabilities that Moog engineers have access to, allow for these
conversions and upgrades to be successfully completed. Moog specializes in:
• Hydraulic Improvements
• EM Upgrades
• Ergonomics
MLRS Upgrade
The MLRS is a high-mobility, automatic system based on M270 weapons platform. Moog, along with its customer KMW, took the lead on the systems
integration from start to finish of the MLRS, which converted the launcher drive system from hydraulic to electric. The upgraded system is now in production
for end-users in Germany, France and Italy. With the use of resources worldwide, Moog successfully completed the conversion, eliminating existing problems
on the MLRS consisting of:
• Internal and external leakage
• Health hazards from hydraulic fluid
• Complex troubleshooting
• Time-consuming repair and maintenance work
• Continuous re-laying of the Launcher Loader Module
With the success of the MLRS conversion, Moog demonstrated ability to provide a complete package, from development to integration to final testing.

Structural and Non-Structural Repair Capabilities
Cold Spray is a metal powder spray process that builds back metal surfaces without inducing thermal stresses into the parent material. The industry is moving
toward Cold Spray for several products, including gearboxes, constant speed drives and other items subject to high heat environments.
• Low Pressure Cold Spray – used for more cosmetic and non-structural areas
• High Pressure Cold Spray – potential structural repair solution
Tagnite is a magnesium anodizing process that is very effective in protecting magnesium parts from corrosion. It is water soluble and can be sent into the
sewer system, whereas the current industry magnesium corrosion protection is highly caustic, costly to dispose, and not EPA friendly.
Case Study: TOW Launcher
Challenge: A Moog customer was experiencing premature wear-out problems with the TOW azimuth damper design due to operation in desert environments.
Additional wear problems resulted from design changes that increased the loads placed on the Damper Bearings.
Solution: Moog was asked to redesign the TOW Damper to increase the number of support bearings from two to three and to utilize sealed bearings for
improved life in harsh environments. Moog successfully completed the project and continues to assist other customers facing the same wear-out problems.
