PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS
There are some things you may not know about prayer at Trinity. Did you know that at our weekly Community
Meal at the My Place Teen Center, there is a large prayer request box on the counter where people come to
pick up their food? Almost every week someone writes a prayer request and puts it in the box. We then honor
that request at our Wednesday morning prayer group. In addition, did you know that there is also a prayer
request box outside Bonnie’s office, or that you can email your prayer request directly?
[email protected]
Speaking of which, did you know that a prayer group meets in my office every Wednesday morning at 11:15?
We have had as many as nine people attend, or as few as one or two, but we have never missed a week. We
pray for those who are sick or dying, for those who are having family problems, for those who are traveling, for
our congregation and its various ministries, for various prayer requests, and for any other joys or sorrows that
are lifted up. We always end by praying for each and every person listed in our membership directory on a
rotating basis.
Did you know that your church council meetings and our various committee meetings always begin in prayer,
as do all of our Breaking Bread and fellowship events? Did you know that I, and many of you, pray for those on
our prayer list and for others requesting prayer? Did you know that our loving God hears all of our prayers?
My prayer for you this summer is that you will make time to relax, whether traveling or simply lounging in your
yard. And that while you are relaxing, you will first lift up prayers of thanks to the One who created us and
sustains us. If you consider your many blessings, you will realize the graciousness of our God. Secondly, pour
out your cares and concerns to the One who promised to be with us through all of our trials and tribulations.
And thirdly, pray for others in need of God’s compassion, your family and friends, your church, the suffering, the wayward, those living in war and terror, and the many others who need God’s loving care. I also have a special request. Sometime during the week of July 13, I am suggesting that each of us takes a
prayer walk around a neighborhood where we live or work. As you pass by each home or work space, say a
prayer for the persons who live or work there. Even if you do not know them, God knows what they need.
Keeping all of you in prayer this summer. Pastor Karen
WELCOME HOME TEAM ETHIOPIA!

NEWS FROM SOCIAL MINISTRY
CLIMB ABOARD THE FOOD TRAIN
On May 16, the Food Train went to all the businesses that participated in our city-wide
event and picked up boxes of food and the money jars. On Saturday, Trinity volunteers
were at the Skateboard Park and Shaw’s collecting food and money donations. On Sunday, as people walked, 6the train travelled down Main Street stopping at First Baptist Church and
Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church. The train went to the Westbrook Food Pantry dropping off 130
boxes of food for the people of Westbrook who utilize the food pantry monthly. The Food Train event also
raised $3,750 and Trinity received matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. A BIG THANK YOU to
all the people who helped with this event. Social Committee-Brenda, Jane, Deb, Kevin and Pastor Karen.
WORLD MALARIA WORLD MALARIA DAY – THANK YOU FROM ELCA WORLD HUNGER!
Thanks to you and thousands of supporters like you, together we surpassed our goal of $250,000 for World
Malaria Day. Because of your overwhelming generosity, gifts for the ELCA Malaria Campaign totaled $300,000,
given in addition to $100,000 of matching funds. We are able to launch work in Namibia this year. Thank you!
Members of our Ethiopian/Eritrean Fellowship have been invited to sing at Calumet this coming Saturday,
June 28, at 7:00 for special music in the Conference Center Dining Hall. They will also be providing prelude and
postlude music on Sunday at the 10:00am worship at the outdoor chapel. Calumet is a little over an hour from
Westbrook, so consider going there for a day at the beach (there is a beach barbeque every day at noon), for
the Saturday evening dinner and entertainment, or for Sunday worship at 10. Calumet staff also has a day full
of activities planned for July 4th. Further information can be found at Calumet.org.

Sunday School concluded on May 18 and will commence again on September 7 with Rally Day. September 14
will be a breakfast treat at IHop. Fall classes will start at 9:30 am until 10:15. We will offer two different
confirmation classes in the fall. Paul and Carol will teach one class and Pastor Karen the other. Our regular
Sunday School class will continue to use “Sermons for Kids” which coincides with Pastor’s weekly gospel reading and sermon. Bev, Cathie and Brenda will teach this class. If we find it necessary to divide the class, we
will do it as need dictates. Our annual yard sale to benefit VBS occurred at St. Ansgars on May 25. Vacation
Bible School will be held at Trinity on July 14 thru July 18. Applications will be mailed shortly. (see below) If we
leave someone out, please call it to Doug’s attention. We will need volunteer help each day the week of July 14 both from 8-9 am and also 4-5 pm. Also, we need to provide dinner for the counselors on two evenings. If you
can help, please contact anyone on the committee. Doug Moreshead
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL sponsored by St. Ansgar and Trinity will be held July 14th-18th from 9am 4pm. Although registration deadline was June 25th, there might be a couple more slots. Contact
Doug Moreshead today. Scholarships are available. VBS is a fun place to go!
ON-GOING EVENTS
ETHIOPIAN AND ERITREAN FELLOWSHIP IN SONG AND PRAYER – Our Ethiopian and
Eritrean brothers and sisters from Westbrook and greater Portland are meeting weekly at
Trinity every SUNDAY at 4:00 pm in the fellowship hall for a Celebration of Prayer and Praise
in their native languages.
REJOICING SPIRITS Third Sunday of month at 4:00 pm: Casual and user friendly for
those with disabilities or mental challenges. We have a sign language interpreter.
Families and caregivers, as well as anyone else who would like to attend are welcome. The next
worship service will be Sunday, July 20. The fellowship meal will be sponsored by the Church Council.
PRAYER GROUP – Meets Wednesday at 11:15. Many prayer concerns have been lifted up and
many thanksgivings raised. We invite all who cannot attend to consider praying with us at 11:15 on
Wednesday from wherever you are at that time. There are prayer request cards and a box to place them in
after they are filled out on the table next to the office door.
COMMUNITY MEAL: Every Wednesday at My Place Teen Center, from 5:00-6pm, a free meal is served for
anyone in the community. It is sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church doing food prep, serving and cleanup,
with the Wayside Food Programs providing the ingredients. This Outreach Mission is in need of volunteers on
Wednesday afternoons to cook and later to serve or clean up. Please contact Jane Sinclair.
BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS are being offered at the community meal.
LUTHERAN SENIOR SAINTS, formed in the 1990’s, is a club-type group of seniors from all area
Lutheran churches. It is intended for friendship, fellowship, bible study and programs of interest
every 3rd Wednesday. We do not cancel unless there is bad weather. The cancelations you read in
the Grapevine are for the singing ministries in the afternoons on those days. Anytime you would
like to attend these meetings, call Mary Ann Gagnon (854-4042 or cell 400-4825) by the weekend before the
third Wed. so I can have a count of people. We meet at 11:00 am at IHop in South Portland.
Dear Trinity Lutheran Church: Thank you for unforgetable cooperation that you’ve done for us on our wedding. We are so grateful to have you! May God bless you abundantly!! Mitike & Challa
I want to thank you for all the prayers, cards, and visits while I was in the hospital and rehab. I don’t remember many of you being there but thank you for keeping Leonard company while he waited for me to improve.
Many Blessings to all of you! Mary Ann Gagnon
To my Trinity friends: I would like to thank you for all the encouraging get well cards and notes I received and
prayers offered for my recovery. I am improving each day. Once again, thank you for your kindness. Elsie Reese
Dear Trinity, We thank you so much for participating in our 2014 “Shine Your Light Banquet” and your contribution to International Christian Fellowship. Rev. Peter Mutima
The Light Side
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we
were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in.
Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes
are coming after us with flashlights."
preacher's little boy inquired, "Daddy, I notice every Sunday morning when you first come out to
preach, you sit up on the platform and bow your head. What are you doing?"
The father explained, "I'm asking the Lord to give me a good sermon."
The little boy said, "Why don't he?"

Firefly July
By J. Patrick Lewis
When I was ten, one summer night,
The baby stars that leapt
Among the trees like dimes of light,
I cupped and capped, and kept.
I could not count the baby stars,
For they were getting ready
To fire up a festivalElectrified Confetti!!
