Saving Our Nation
The book of Lamentations in the Old Testament was written by the
prophet Jeremiah as he looked over the devastated ruins of the city
of Jerusalem. For two hundred years God had sent prophets to warn
the people of God to turn back to Him or face His judgment. The
people persisted in their sins of idolatry, immortality and injustice.
God’s judgment came.
Those with spiritual insight today look across the devastated
landscape of our nation. Injustice is flaunted. Immorality is
celebrated. Belief in the one true and living God to whom we are
accountable is rejected as a myth.
The truth is that as individuals and as a nation we are accountable
to the one true and living God, the creator of all things. Many
solutions are presented to address the perceived and real ills of our
land. Yet, the solution
was clearly given several thousand years
ago. Here it is: 13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no
rain, or command the
locust to devour the land, or send pestilence
among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name
humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin
and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (ESV)
This promise was given to the nation of Israel in response to
Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. It
still applies today for God’s people. The hope of our nation is that
God’s people will call out to Him in repentance.
I love this country. I believe we live in the greatest nation on the
face of the earth. I also believe that is true because we were
founded on the conviction that there is a God in heaven to whom
we are accountable. I believe the future of our nation depends on
our faithfulness in preparing people to meet Jesus so that through
the transformed lives of broken people God may be glorified in our
land.
As we celebrate the founding of our nation, make sure to pray that
God would heal our land. Pray that God’s people will return
wholeheartedly to His ways. The hope of our nation is in the hands
of God’s people. May we be found faithful as we pray, work and
witness.
