VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES • • • • • 14 Ripple Effect—Life Stream Church has a thrift store in the west end of their building on Lake Michigan Drive. The proceeds from this store will be used to support mission work in our community and abroad. They are in need of volunteers to help sort store donations and to work in the store. If you are interested in helping, please stop by and let them know. Love INC—Volunteers are needed for this ministry as they continue to supply help to the needy in our community. You can work in their “New to You” store or in the office. Contact them directly at 895-5629 for more information. Manna Meal Ministries—This a local ministry that provides an after school meal for kids in pre-school through 5th grade. Many of these kids go home to an empty house with no supper, because Mom and Dad are still working. There are certain items needed for this ministry, specifically Peanut Butter for the sandwiches that are made each day. When Manna meals started 8 years ago they had approximately 15 meals they made each day—now they make over 150!!! Volunteers are needed to pass out these lunches at the school or to help make the lunches. Allendale Lions Club and Allendale Rotary Club—Both of these civic minded organizations give back to the community. New members are always welcome. If you would like more information, please let me know. Mission Allendale—Mission Allendale is serving our community with spiritual and physical food. The current emphasis is the Mobile Pantry Food Truck from Feeding America but in the future they would like to expand the ministry to meet other needs besides food. Upcoming Food Truck dates are Saturday, October 10 & 31. Volunteers are welcome to come and help to distribute food. From the director’s desk... I just love this time of year—all of the smells, colors and days are so crisp and fresh! Cool nights and sunny days make my heart happy! There are so many fun things to do this month—why not join us for some: October 7—Art Prize October 10—Birch Run Shopping Trip October 16—Soup Supper and Movie Night October 21—Mystery Trip (final one this year!) October 22—Grand Rapids Civic Theatre to see Sleepy Hollow October 28—Sonus Hearing will join us at the catered lunch! There’s something for everybody to do this month! Fall brings so much busy-ness and needed structure to my life—I don’t know why summer seems so chaotic; especially since I don’t have any kids around the house...well, except grandkids! But this year there is a whirlwind of busy-ness that I just can’t keep on top of! I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I’m looking forward to winter so I can get some inside stuff done! Just take a deep breath and remember to not sweat the small stuff—and it’s ALL small stuff! I’m putting out a request for you to do some detective work for me. I need ideas and suggestions for people, places and things. If you hear, know, see something that looks interesting to visit, hear or bring to our group, please share it with me. After doing this for 11 years, I’m running low on ideas...but then again, most of you won’t remember what you had for lunch yesterday so I could repeat things and you’d never know!! Have a great month, Hugs, Kathy Call Kathy at 616-895-5073 or email [email protected] if you would like more information on the Allendale Lifelong Learners or any of the activities listed in this newsletter. 3 VOLUNTARY DUES—$15.00 PER PERSON ☻A A Little Bit of this and that...☻ that... Give me a sense of humor, Lord—Give me the grace to see a joke. To get some humor out of life and pass it on to other folk! • • • • • • • • • • 4 A Dictionary of Project Terms Project slightly behind original schedule due to unforeseen difficulties-We got so sick of working on this that we decided to do something else. Major Technological Breakthrough--Back to the drawing board. Developed after years of intensive research-It was discovered by accident. Customer satisfaction is believed assured--We are so far behind schedule that the customer will be happy to get anything at all from us. The design will be finalized in the next reporting period-We haven't started this job yet, but we've got to say something. Test results were extremely gratifying--It works, and are we surprised. Extensive effort is being applied on a fresh approach to the problem-We just hired three new guys; we'll let them kick it around for a while. Preliminary operational tests are inconclusive-The darn thing blew up when we threw the switch. The entire concept will have to be abandoned--The only guy who understood the thing quit. Modifications are under way to correct certain minor difficulties--We threw the whole thing out and are starting from scratch. Many of you have been asking about the voluntary dues that we collect each year. You may pay the dues whenever you are able to and there is no penalty for not paying, Dues are $15.00 per person and can be paid in cash or a check made out to Allendale Lifelong Learners. Typically these dues are collected October through December. If you would like to ‘pay’ your dues with time, supplies or in-kind donations, those are accepted at any time. This could be done by using your gifts, talents or excess goods, rather than with money. So if you are able and willing to help donate supplies or your time thru the year and/or provide decorations or prizes for the monthly luncheons, please keep the $15.00 and we’ll all work together to continue our Lifelong Learning… As always, if you have any questions, please give me a call (Kathy, 616895-5073) 11 Bible Verses About Aging With God at the center of our lives, aging is something to look forward to. Do not be afraid of aging, and be encouraged! 1. Proverbs 20:29—The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair. 2. Isaiah 46:4—Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; And I will bear you and I will deliver you. 3. Psalms 71:9—Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails. 4. Proverbs 23:22—Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old. 5. Proverbs 17:6—Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers. 6. Job 32:7—"I thought age should speak, And increased years should teach wisdom." 7. Psalms 90:12—So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. 8. 1 Kings 3:14—"If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will prolong your days." 9. Psalms 71:18—And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. 10. Deuteronomy 34:7—Although Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. 11. Deuteronomy 5:16—'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you. 13 Just to Warm your Heart... BACK HOME If I had the power to turn back the clock, Go back to that house at the end of the block— The house that was HOME when I was a kid, I know that I’d love it more now than I did. If I could be back there at my mother’s knee, And hear once again all the things she told me, I’d listen as I never listened before, For she knew so well just what life had in store. And all the advice my dad used to give, His voice I’ll remember as long as I live; But it didn’t seem really important then; What I’d give just to live it all over again. I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, and what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing what anybody and everybody else does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the “thumbs up” and tell them that I like them. And it works just like Facebook too! I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist! And what I’d give for the chance I once had, To do so much more for my mother and dad; To give them more join and a little less pain; A little more sunshine—a little less rain. But the years roll on and we cannot go back, Whether we were born in a mansion or in a tar shack; But we can start right now—in the hour that’s here, To do something more for the ones we hold dear. And since time in its flight is traveling so fast; Let’s not spend it regretting that which is past; But let’s make tomorrow a happier day By doing our “good to others” - TODAY! 12 5 Did you know a lobsters blood is colorless but when exposed to oxygen it turns blue • Did you know the flag for Libya is unlike any other being a solid green color • Did you know goldfish can see both infrared and ultraviolet light • Did you know there is no such thing as a naturally blue food • Did you know at birth dalmations are always white • Did you know black on yellow are the 2 colors with the strongest impact • Did you know the safest car color is white • Did you know a cats urine glows under a blacklight • Did you know white cats with blue eyes are usually deaf • Did you know Scotland has the most redheads • Did you know scorpions glow under ultra violet light • Did you know Mars appears red because it's covered in rust • Did you know the colored part of your eye is called the iris • Did you know the rarest type of diamond is green • Did you know the meaning of 'Blue Chip' comes from blue casino chips which have a high value • Did you know crocodiles are color blind • Did you know grasshoppers have white blood • Did you know blonde beards grow faster than darker beards • Did you know red light has the highest wavelength • Did you know turnips turn green when sunburnt • Did you know blue and white are the most common school colors • Did you know spiders have transparent blood • Did you know mosquitoes prefer children to adults and blondes to brunettes • Did you know the color of a chile pepper is no indication of its heat (usually the smaller the the hotter) • Did you know Orange Fanta is the 3rd largest selling soft drink in the world • Did you know the most popular toothbrush color is blue • Did you know the 'black box' that houses an airplanes voice recorder is actually orange so it can be more easily detected amid the debris of a plane crash • Did you know the human eye can detect more shades of green that any other colour • Did you know a garfish has green bones • 6 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS: • When paying for an activity with the group, please make your checks out to Allendale Lifelong Learners.
