C.J. Spiller gives Saints first win
Union County High School football great C.J. Spiller gave the New Orleans Saints
their first victory this season with a 26-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday
night. The running back’s 80-yard catch and run on the second play of overtime
sealed the deal, showing that his speed and versatility continues to make its mark.

LAKE BUTLER — Sen. Charles S.
“Charlie” Dean, Sr. and Rep. Charles
E. Van Zant held a 9 a.m. Union
County Legislative Delegation meeting
Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the courthouse.
Dean announced that the 2016
Legislative Session will begin on
Jan. 12.
Several county and agency leaders
came before the delegation to share
news and make some requests during
the hour-long meeting.
Clerk of Court Kellie Hendricks
Connell requested that the delegation
track legislation that affects the clerk’s
office.
School board member Alvin Griffis
asked legislators to reinstate the special
diploma, which is available to certain
students with disabilities. He also asked
them to increase base student education
funding since some of it was cut that
significantly affected Union County’s
effort to assist adults with disabilities.
Finally, Griffis asked that they
increase sparsity funding, which is
critical to small counties.
Candice King, executive director of
the ACORN Clinic, gave an overview
of services provided and plans for
expanding these services. The clinic
currently serves a 12-county area.
Abby Johnson was recognized from
the Suwannee River Water Management
District. She is the governmental affairs
and communications coordinator.
Joe Pietrangelo, administrator of
the Florida Department of Health in
Bradford and Union counties, said that
obesity continues to be a major health
concern in the area. He talked about a
recent dental program that currently
serves Lake Butler Elementary School
and will eventually incorporate a bus to
go from school to school with the goal
of providing dental services to adults
as well. And he mentioned the grand
opening of New River Health at the
clinic’s new office space in Lake Butler.
Additionally, Pietrangelo shared some
future goals for a mobile medical clinic
and a freestanding dental clinic for both
Union and Bradford counties.
Dean and Van Zant are term limited,
so they decided that the incoming
House member would chair the next
delegation meeting.

Are Details Important?
As we seek to please God, is it necessary to obey the details in
God’s command or will God still be pleased if we ignore the
details? An event in the life of Moses shows us the answer to
this question. In Numbers 20:7-8, God tells Moses to “Take
the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation
together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield
its water.” God gave details as to what Moses was to do on
this occasion. In Numbers 20:11 we read, “Then Moses lifted
his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod.” These verses
show how Moses did not follow the details in God’s
command. Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to the
rock. How did God respond to the failure of Moses to follow
the details of His command? God told Moses and Aaron,
“Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of
the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this
assembly into the land which I have given them” (Numbers
20:12). They would not enter the promised land because they
failed to follow the details of God’s command. When it comes
to pleasing God, details are important!

member of UCHS to win the
coveted Shad Bryant Memorial
Trophy in 1961, naming him
“Player of the Year.” This
award was given annually to
the Suwannee Conference’s top
all-around scholastic athlete.
Gordon was selected to the 1959
and 1960 Gainesville Sun All

Upon graduation Gordon
entered the U.S. Army. After his
military career Gordon enrolled
at Lake City Community College
then transferred to Florida State

After graduation from FSU
in 1969, Gordon began 30year career with the Florida
Department of Corrections.
Gordon has been an active
member of the Union County

years. He and his wife Shary
make their home in Lake Butler.
Larry Clyatt is a 1965 UCHS
graduate and a member of a
large family residing in the
Worthington Springs area. Clyatt
earned five football letters,
beginning his career as a seventh
grader. He cut his teeth under
coach McGill that year and the
next. Clyatt was selected to the
1962, 1963 and 1964 Gainesville
Sun All Area Teams. He was also
selected to the 1963 and 1964 All
Suwannee Conference Teams.
Clyatt earned Gainesville Sun
Player of the Week recognition
five times over the course of the
1962, 1963 and 1964 seasons.
After graduation, Clyatt was
awarded a basketball scholarship
to York College in York, NE.
Clyatt has been active in
community service and school
volunteering for the past decade.
Clyatt is the current pastor of
Harmony Free Will Baptist
Church. He and his wife Peggy
make their home in the Miller
Community of Union County.
As announced at last year’s
homecoming game, the UCHS
football stadium, known as “The
Jungle,” was named Marvin H.
Pritchett Field in recognition
of the late philanthropist’s
significant contributions to
the school’s football program
and other sports. A decade ago
Pritchett and his wife Margaret
had installed the first-ever
oversized video screen at any
Florida high school field, at a
cost of $65,000. This year a
brick base was built underneath
the scoreboard that houses the
Jumbotron to become the new
Football Hall of Fame memorial.
A former UCHS football player
himself, Pritchett “believed
immensely in the comradery and
discipline young athletes learn
through playing competitive
sports,” as noted in a special
flyer handed out to the crowd last
year that showed a rendering of
the planned memorial addition.
Naming the field is in
recognition of Pritchett’s “love
for athletics and his community.”
The company he founded,
Pritchett Trucking, is the Union
County School District’s 2014-15
Business Partner of the Year. It
was also nominated by the school
board and subsequently selected
by the Florida Commissioner of
Education for its 2015 Business
Recognition Award.

Tigers
LBMS takes down Ruth Raines
in first football victory
The Lake Butler Middle School football team picked up their
first win of the season Monday night, Oct. 5, 30-28 over
visiting Ruth Raines Middle School. The young Tigers got
over 200 yards rushing combined from Jermaine Frazier,
Fred Jackson and Paden Clyatt. Frazier and Jackson
scored two touchdowns each while converting three 2-point
conversions including one with less than 3 minutes to play
in the game. The defense came up with three straight stops
on the Rangers’ last three possessions to help the Tigers
gain the comeback win. Trailing 28-16 entering the fourth
quarter, the Tiger defense, led by Spencer Hedman, Angelu
NuNu, J.B. Godwin, Chase Galleger, Lance Thornton,
Mitchell Rizer and Frazier, held back the bigger Rangers to
help the Tigers to victory. Photo: Lola Lacy
Lake Butler’s highest
flying Tiger gets a facelift
The City of Lake Butler has a $9,400 annual contract
with Utility Services Inc. to maintain the city’s water
tower. They paint it and check and certify the interior
to be in compliance with standards every five years.
“It takes approximately six weeks to complete the
task, depending on the weather,” said City Manager
Dave Mecusker. It looked like the paint job was
nearing completion Sept. 11. That Union County
Tiger never looked so good! Photo: Vince Brown

National 4-H Week
4-H
provide fine training for the member
no matter what his avocation in life
may be. Not all here will follow the
plow or take up the tasks of the farm
homemaker. ...
Into the community and home we
bring, too, the spirit of play, the spirit
of fair and friendly competition,
which is an aid to endeavor. We
impress upon your daughter and son
that they must win without boasting
and lose without squealing, for to be
a member is a challenge to be the very
best. It is a great honor; it has great
reward.
Join our 4-H members in
recognizing and celebrating National
4-H Week!
For more information on the programs
offered by Union County 4-H, please

learning experiences outside the
classroom and, now, contributing in
the classroom as well.
Union County 4-H is proud to offer
a wide range of learning opportunities
that encompass the 4 H’s that members
pledge their commitment to: Head (to
clearer thinking), heart (to greater
loyalty), hands (to larger service) and
health (to better living). Youth are
encouraged to participate in activities
that teach them valuable life skills.
As our members and leaders
celebrate National 4-H Week, I hope
that time is taken to reflect on the
reason why you do what you do and
the difference it makes.
