Mayor Welcome
Our town is
fortunate to have
a special group of
dedicated volunteers who work
year-round to put
on San Juan Capistrano’s largest and greatest event, the
Swallows Day Parade.
The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta
Association’s non-motorized parade
is an annual ritual dating back more
than five decades. It’s part of our
unique history, heritage and culture
and I thank each and every volunteer
for keeping such a wonderful tradition alive.
Each year, I look forward to the
“Fiesta de las Golondrinas” or Festival
of the Swallows, which brings folks
from all walks of life here to San Juan
3
Capistrano for a spectacular, memorable celebration.
The day showcases our historic
town and caters to young and old and
everyone in between. There’s vivid
characters and music and costumes
and cowboys and horses and even
more horses. Along with the Swallows
Day Parade, you will enjoy the Mercado Street Fair and exciting activities
at local restaurants and businesses
around town. The Mission San Juan
Capistrano, which just finished its
new gate house, always has lots of fun
in store, so be sure to drop by there
during the day, too.
So, I hope you will join me in tipping my hat to San Juan Capistrano
and celebrating the best Fiesta de las
Golondrinas yet!
—John Taylor, Mayor
Happy
Trails...
...Our theme for
the 55th Swallows Day Parade
and Mercado! I
welcome each of
you to this special
Fiesta de las
Golondrinas season and thank our
volunteers, the city of San Juan Capistrano and this amazing community for their support in presenting
the Swallows Day Parade along with
Taste of San Juan, Kids Pet Parade,
El Presidente Ball, Fiesta Grande
and Hoos’Gow Day.
Over 40,000 spectators and
participants are expected at this
year’s Swallows Day Parade—one of
the largest non-motorized parades
in the country. This year, we will
feature over 600 horses, a dozen
marching bands, carriages, wagons
and over 3,200 walking participants
from local business, schools and
community organizations.
We honor and thank our major
sponsors—Sycamore Trails Stables,
St. Margaret’s Episcopal School and
Rancho Mission Viejo/El Viaje de
Portola—celebrating their 50th year!
I hope that the Fiesta de las
Golondrinas events are all memorable experiences for each of you and
we invite you come back to San Juan
Capistrano throughout the year.
Enjoy!

2013
Former San Juan
Capistrano mayor and
“native son” Joe Soto
will serve as grand
marshal for the 2013
Swallows Day Parade.
Joe has a long and
rich heritage in San Juan Capistrano and with the Swallows Day
Parade. He takes pride in having attended every parade, missing
only one when away for his military service. Along with seven
brothers and four sisters, Soto grew up in the historic Los Rios
District and has lived in San Juan Capistrano his entire life. Joe
and his wife of 36 years, Carol, have three daughters, one son and
recently became grandparents of their first grandchild. Joe has
extensive involvement in civic and charitable endeavors including serving as mayor of San Juan Capistrano in 2004 and 2008.
Upon being selected as grand marshal Joe said, “When I think
back as a young student attending the old mission school and
participating in the Swallows Day celebrations, never in my
wildest dreams did I ever imagine I’d someday be selected as the
parade’s grand marshal. I deeply embrace this honor and look
forward to another great parade day in this beautiful valley.”

Mercado
Street Fair
The Mercado Street Faire is a parade-day tradition and
a great place to stop in before, during or after the parade.
A real street fair, the Mercado started out along Ortega
Highway from Camino Capistrano to El Camino Real.
It has expanded over the years now takes place along El
Camino Real from Ortega Highway to Camino Capistrano and on the streets in between.
Featuring about 175 street vendors selling food, drinks,
jewelry, western items and a variety of arts and crafts
items, the Mercado is free to attend and runs from 8 a.m.
– 5 p.m.
Just adjacent to the Mercado in Historic Town Center
Park, is an area for young children with games and rides
including a wrecking ball, giant slide, space maze and
a “Bubble Roller” for older children or young hearted
adults.
Rick Robledo and the Working Cowboy Band will play
throughout the day and they’ll be plenty of western dancing.
One change this year is that there will not be any beer
or wine sales in this area making it an even more family
friendly spot to visit on parade day!
Longtime San Juan Capistrano resident Kathy Hooper
pours her heart and soul into organizing the Mercado
Street Faire and thanks the Orange County Sherriff deputies and Marines from the City of San Juan Capistrano’s
adopted 1/11 Marines that provide event security to keep
the event safe and enjoyable for everyone.

HELEN MC MULLEN
was New Year’s Day
and his parents were so
pleased with his birth,
they called him Happy,
a name that has stuck
all his life.
The San Juan Capistrano Historical Society
bestowed the honor
of Town Patriarch on
Happy several years ago
and it is a role that he
cherishes.
Happy is a member
of the Juaneño Indian
tribe and consequently has deep roots in this community.
His mother was a Juaneño and his father George Hunn
came from Germany. His great-grandmother, Viviana Olivares, was a former Matriarch in the 1960s.
Happy worked for the City of Laguna Beach for over 38
years and was a foreman for the street department. He enjoys golf, the VFW, and is a life member of Post 3801l, past
Post Commander and a past Commander of the American
Legion Post 721.
City Matriarch
Helen McMullen was named Town Matriarch by the San
Juan Capistrano Historical Society in 2002 because of her
deep roots and love of San Juan Capistrano.
She is the daughter of Ralph Charles and Reyes Marie
Manriquez, both Juaneño descendents. Her father helped
build the wall on Stone Field in the 1930s and later worked
in the San Pedro shipyards during WWII.
Helen sang in the Mission San Juan choir for 20 years
and was a guide. After she graduated from high school in
1941, she married Bill McMullen.
Helen has been involved in Indian affairs for many years
and is past president of the Capistrano Indian Council.
HAPPY HUNN
City Patriarch
Growing up with everyone calling you Happy is probably one of the greatest compliments. Thomas Hunn was
the first baby born in Orange County in the year 1933. It

History
Fiesta Association
and Swallows Day Parade
The Swallows Day Parade is an outgrowth of a school
carnival held in the 1950s to celebrate the return of the
swallows to San Juan Capistrano. With a vision for something much more, several dedicated residents turned that
small-town carnival into a local equestrian parade in 1958
to involve the entire community.
Today, 55 parades later, the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta
Association will celebrate the parade’s theme, “Happy
Trails” on Saturday, March 23 in downtown San Juan
Capistrano.
The San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association began as a
committee of the San Juan Capistrano Business Council,
which later became the San Juan Capistrano Chamber
of Commerce. In addition to the equestrian parade, the
22
group organized a trail ride and western dance. Various
activities have been added and dropped over the years,
but the parade continues on. The Swallows Day Parade
became such a major production over the years that in
1987 it assumed its own identity as a separate, nonprofit
organization known as the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta
Association.
Since 1987, a number of other civic organizations have
joined with the Fiesta Association to form a month-long
celebration known as the “Fiesta de Las Golondrinas” or
Festival of the Swallows. In addition to celebrating the
return of the swallows, the goal of the Fiesta Association
events is to pay tribute to San Juan Capistrano’s unique
western, Spanish and local Juaneño Indian heritage.
Because of the enormous city growth since its incorporation in 1961, the Fiesta Association has played a strong
role in helping newer residents assimilate into the community. In 1995, the city of San Juan Capistrano made the
Fiesta Association the lead coordinating organization with
approval rights for all Fiesta de las Golondrinas events.
An underlying goal of the organization is that newer
residents will come to appreciate San Juan Capistrano’s
long and interesting history as Orange County’s oldest
community.
Membership in the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association is open to anyone interested in being part of a
dedicated group of people who are still making history in
San Juan Capistrano.
Call 949.493.1976 or visit www.swallowsparade.org for
more information.

Hangin’Judge
Ed O’Donnell
Ed O’Donnell is a new
member to the San Juan
Capistrano Fiesta Association, but is not short on
dedication or involvement!
He’s recently taken on
the role of Hangin’ Judge
under the direction of
Fiesta Association Board
Members and Sherriff Chris Phillips and is
enjoying the opportunity
to meet new people and
enjoy all of the Fiesta de las
Golondrinas festivities at
the same time.
While he’s not “hangin’ bad guys,” O’Donnell enjoys
surfing and playing drums with the Kelly Boyz Band.
