HOLES in Grey-Bruce
The par 5 9th hole at Ainsdale Golf Course plays 555 yards from the back tees, has a pond on the right, out of bounds on the left,
is mostly uphill and has a severely sloped green protected on the left by a sand trap. It’s definitely no picnic but it’s not as intimidating as it used to be more than 25 years ago when it was a devilishly difficult 666-yard par 6.

To prepare for these events he will continue his routine of hitting the gym at Stone Tree five days a week and spending lots of
time at the driving range (he puts in way more time at the driving
range than on the course).
He also works at Stone Tree two to four days a week so you
can pretty much figure he’ll be spending most of his summer at
the course.
His future plans are to take the Professional Golf Management
program at Niagara College this fall then become a teaching pro.

Sound Golf and Country Club since 1992. The
69-year-old Cochrane, Ont. native has won six senior
club championships and in the year 2000 he won both the
men’s and senior club championships. The retired high
school teacher typically plays more than 100 rounds a year
- 80 to 85 at Legacy and another 20 to 30 in Myrtle Beach
where he spends February and March. One of highlights of
his golf career was finishing tied for 10th at the Ontario
Senior Men’s Champion of Champions tournament in 2005.
The event featured 88 senior champions from clubs that
belong to the Golf Association of Ontario. His lowest score
ever was a 67 (-4) at OSGCC in 2001 and he has come
close several times to achieving one of his goals - shooting
his age (he shot 68 twice at age 66). Doug, who moved to
the area from Iroquis Falls in 1991 to teach at Wiarton high
school, also runs a business selling and servicing electronic
caddies. He’s married and has two daughters.

regg Zaun is best known for his baseball skill and knowledge but he also
has some strong connections to the game of golf. His mother Cherie is a
golf pro and former women’s coach at Southern Cal and his uncle, Pat
Dempsey, is a four-time world long drive champion.
“I grew up playing the game. I love the game of golf,” he said during an interview at the Crime Stoppers of Grey-Bruce golf tournament, which was held
June 4 at Chippewa Golf Club.
The former Blue Jays catcher and current Sportsnet baseball analyst hasn’t

The 44-year-old Glendale, California native is also known for his flashy suits
and it wasn’t a total surprise when he showed up at the Crime Stoppers event
in a pink golf shirt and a pair of eye-catching pink, white and black golf pants
with a foral design.
“I had a kind of flamboyant style before I came to work in Canada. When I
was playing I certainly enjoyed dressing up,” he said.
But was he influenced by a certain TV hockey analyst? “Certainly being here
in Canada and seeing Don Cherry on television all the time it was definitely an
inspiration for me. I have to keep up.”
And what about the Jays’ chances this season? “The division is ripe for the
picking. If they (Jays) can repeat what they did last May when they won 18 of
20 games that would put them in a really good spot. But they’re going to have
to win the division to make the playoffs.”
The Crime Stoppers tournament raised $20,500 this year, which brings the
total over 23 years close to $440,000.

• Encourage members and public to bring their children golfing
• Look into the potential of developing a small driving range
• Investigate the viability of extended weekend kitchen hours and
potential "quick" meal options that don’t require a cook on site
• New rough mower should allow for better upkeep of rough
• Redo some tee blocks with topsoil and Sod (7 White, 3 White).

Remembering ‘a fantastic greenskeeper’
Long-time Scenic City course superintendent Al German loses his battle with cancer
By STEVE HARRON
Grey-Bruce Golf
T
Scenic City Golf Course superintendent Al German after playing in
his final club championship in 2012.
he local golf industry has lost a dedicated course superintendent and avid golfer. Al German, who started at
Scenic City Golf Course in 1979, died May 26 after a
lengthy battle with leukemia. He was 60 years old.
He started playing golf at age 10 and entered the golf business in 1972 at Cambridge Golf Course where he initially
worked in the pro shop.
He quickly discovered that outside work was more to his liking and he moved to the greenskeeping staff where he worked
his way up to assistant course superintendent then superintendent.
In 1979 he heard through a friend that then-Scenic City
owner Bob Parker was looking for a superintendent and he
applied for the job.
Once he was hired, he realized he had made a good move.
“I love this area,” he said in an interview with Grey-Bruce Golf
in 2012 after playing in his final club championship at Scenic
City.
In addition to tending to the greens, he became a part-owner in the course with Parker and designed the back nine, which
opened in 1989.
Jake Clark, who bought the course in 2003, said Al was a
“fantastic greenskeeper who “could fix anything.”
“He was also a great golfer who won our club championship multiple times,” Clark said.
“What many people don’t know is Al started out as a righthander and converted to left-handed and he was one of the
few golfers who could play from both sides.”
Although Al wasn’t able to work after being diagnosed in
2011, he could still golf, at certain times, with the aid of a
power cart. In the 2012 interview he shared some of his feelings about his desire to keep playing.
“The doctors said ‘go have fun’ so I’m going to keep playing
as long as I can,” he said. “You make the best of things and go
play golf.”
Considering he wasn’t even able to walk after his treatment
three months before that final club championship, he was
pleased just to have been able to make it through two rounds.
“I was not out to win it. I know everybody in it (the championship) and it was a lot of fun just being around them.”
Those friends and others rallied around his family in 2011
and put together a golf tournament at Scenic City that raised
about $6,000 to help with expenses during his battle with cancer.
A Celebration of his Life was held at Scenic City on June 6.

Take a break to gain perspective
F
Quiet moment to refuel your body might be just what your game needs
or me, ‘being’ is a huge part of the
game…being on the course, being with
buddies, being in the process, in the set
up, in the midst of a good swing leading to
hopefully a good shot…being in the pace of a
good round…but the game itself doesn’t
always allow for us to stay that way.
Situations come up, confidence wanes,
concentration weakens, and a decent round
feels at times like it’s starting to head in a different direction.
Or... the round doesn’t start strong, and
there’s that feeling that it’s uphill from the first
tee. This is where a well-timed snack and/or
drink break comes in because, believe it or not, the pace of a
game doesn’t allow much stoppage.
As slow as we go, we keep rolling
along. The right break, at the right
time, can get your perspective back
and shake up what you think is happening, or not happening just enough
to get it all back on track…heading
the right way.
Plus, as you’re deep in your game,
you may not realize that a little food
energy or hydration may be what
your body needs to then respond to
the demands you place on it on the
back 9…to make something of your
round.
It’s not enough to sit in the cart and sip away while thinking
about it all…take a quiet moment, sip or munch on something,
and just remember ‘being’ for a moment and how nice it is to just
be where you are…in life and/or on the course.
My Tip: Remember any one good shot
you’ve ever made; that day or any day…a
shot you’ve told buddies about…smile, then
keep going.
Plus, in getting a drink or snack from the
Snack Cart, I always like to think that
there’s someone else who is hoping I play
well, even if only to potentially get another
bevy in a couple holes, based on the positivity that a great round brings.
Keep swinging, we’re all in this together.
- JD
