Syringe Assembly Replacement - 900 Series TOC Analyzers
Purpose:
To remove and replace a reagent syringe assembly in Sievers 900 Series TOC Analyzers.
Scope:
This procedure describes how to remove and replace the reagent syringe assembly in
Sievers 900 Series TOC Analyzers and applies to the current revision of the assembly.
Safety:
This procedure requires access to the inside of the Analyzer. To avoid shock, be sure to
power off the Analyzer as described in the procedure. Wear Safety Glasses and use powderfree latex gloves.
Notes:
Retain all hardware unless specifically instructed to do otherwise. Try to avoid excessive
bending of any tubing. If tubing becomes kinked or bent, replace it. Replace wire ties where
removed. Notice how components come off the assembly to ease putting components back
onto the assembly. Do not touch ferrules; if so, ferrules need to be replaced. Always support
valves when tightening or loosening tubing. Wear powder-free latex or cotton gloves when
handling yellow ferrules, tubing or Peek Nuts. (Lab and Portable models only) If an ICR is
attached to the Analyzer, disconnect the ICR sample fittings and remove the ICR from the
support bracket by using a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the support screws. While servicing
internal electronic or electrical components, always practice ESD precautionary steps. Once
power is disconnected from the analyzer, place the provided ESD strap loop over your wrist
and the alligator clip to a ground stud on the analyzer.
Materials:
Phillips (crosshead) #1 screwdriver
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection
Paper towels
Syringe Assembly replacement kit
USB flash memory drive, for backing up the Database
Powder-free latex or cotton gloves and safety glasses.
Container for loose screws.

Procedure:
1. If the Analyzer is taking measurements, press the Stop Analysis button.
2. Save system settings; follow the steps in the Operation and Maintenance Manual to
back up the system settings through the USB port.
3. If the Analyzer is used in an on-line configuration, disable the flow of the sample to
the Analyzer.
4. Turn off the Analyzer.
5. (Lab and Portable models only) If an ICR is attached to the Analyzer, disconnect the
ICR sample fittings and remove the ICR from the support bracket by using a Phillips
screwdriver to loosen the support screws.
6. Open the Analyzer case.
7. Remove the syringe assembly.
a. Close the valves on both of the reagent boxes by pressing the red side of the
valve all the way inward (see Figure 1).
b. In the Portable (if On-Line or Laboratory, skip to 6.7.3) use a long Phillips
screwdriver to loosen the two screws that affix the syringe assembly
mounting plate. Carefully slide the syringe assembly mounting plate forward
and out of the Analyzer (see Figure 3).
c. Disconnect the tubing that leads to the appropriate reagent container from
the syringe assembly you are removing; for example, if you are removing the
acid syringe, follow the tubing with the Acid label up to the reagent container
and unscrew the PEEK nut.
d. Disconnect the tubing that leads from the syringe assembly to the Valco nut
at the stream splitter, using a 1/4" open-ended wrench. If you are replacing
the acid syringe assembly, disconnect the nut from the lower stream splitter; if
you are replacing the oxidizer syringe assembly, disconnect the nut from the
upper stream splitter (see Figures 1 and 2).
e. Disconnect the black electrical connector that connects to the syringe
assembly.
f. In the Portable and Laboratory models, remove the Drip Shield from the
syringe assembly.
g. Use the Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two mounting screws that affix the
syringe assembly to the mounting plate. Pull the assembly away from the
mounting plate (see Figures 3 and 4).
8. NOTE: Syringes containing acid or oxidizer need to be disposed of according to
local regulations. All reagent containers are shipped with Material Safety Data
Sheets (MSDS.) These sheets will provide instructions. GE Analytical Instruments
cannot accept syringes for disposal.

9. Install the new syringe assembly.
a. Remove the new syringe assembly from the packaging and affix it to the
mounting plate with the two captive screws.
b. Reconnect the Valco nut to the stream splitter with the 1/4" open-ended
wrench.
c. Reconnect the PEEK nut to the reagent box.
d. Open the valve on the reagent boxes by pressing the green side of the valve
all the way inward.
e. Reconnect the black electrical connector that connects the syringe assembly
to the syringe motor.
f. On the Portable only, carefully slide the syringe assembly mounting plate back
into the Analyzer; make sure the set pin aligns with the plate.
g. Secure the syringe assembly mounting plate by replacing the two screws.
h. In the Portable and Laboratory models, replace the Drip Shield.
i. Close and secure the Analyzer case.
j. Restore sample flow to the Analyzer.
k. Turn the Analyzer on.
l. Press the Menu button, select the Maintenance tab, and press the
Consumables button.
m. Press the Flush button and then the Flush Both button. Wait for the syringe
flush to complete.
10. Restore system settings; follow the steps in the Operation and Maintenance Manual to
load the system settings through the USB port, and then the Analyzer is ready to
return to normal operation.
