“Handybook”
What is it?
•Since 1947, the Handybook for Genealogists has been a “must have” for
researchers. It contains a vast amount of information on U.S. counties, which
is critical to family history research because the greatest amount of vital
records are kept at the county level
•Records are kept by individual jurisdictions. Each country keeps records on
its citizens, and a state government holds different record types than the local
county government. Using each jurisdiction will help you find your ancestors
more effectively. Using the sources listed in the Handybook can save you
hours of research.
•With the Handybook, you can quickly identify which records are held by
each county and the kinds of information contained within each record type.
You also have at your fingertips addresses, phone numbers, email addresses,
and website URLs that make it easy to contact county record keepers.

State Information
• Records held by the state include:
• Land
• Tax
• Birth
• Marriage
• Death
• Some records, such as immigration, emigration and
naturalization records, can be located at all levels of
jurisdiction – national, state and county.
• The Handybook gives contact information for offices that
maintain records which allow you to quickly locate and
request copies of valuable documents. Where known, internet
addresses have also been included.

The Periodical Source Index (PERSI)
is one of the most valuable family
resources ever created because it gives
you access to something most
repositories of statistical data simply
can’t--- which is living biographical and
historical information about your
ancestors and about the times and
places in which they lived.

WHAT PERSI CAN NOT DO
• It does not index every name mentioned in the articles.
• It does not include the actual articles.
• It does not index queries, ancestor charts, family group
sheets, or book reviews.
• It does not index information of temporary usefulness,
such as society officers, membership lists, and meeting
notices.
• It does not index surname journals and newsletters.
• It does not provide page numbers.

HOW PERSI CAN HELP YOU:
• PERSI has more than 6500 periodicals.
• PERSI provides subject access to about 2
million articles.
• PERSI includes nearly all English-language
and French-Canadian genealogical periodicals.
• PERSI indexes articles by locality, family
(surname), and research methodology.

identify and explain record types.
•Most methodology articles are encoded “Other”.
•If methodology articles pertain to a specific
geographical area they are indexed by place and
assigned “Other” as the record type.
