TAIPEI Tours
Taipei History Taipei possesses a rich cultural landscape, brimming with heritage
sites and museums that are unique treasures – all leading national
attractions in their categories, all expressions of the city’s deep
cultural and knowledge currents. In this issue we’ve mapped
out three special touring routes, taking you to the leisurely and
walkable Zhongshan and Shilin districts, the heritage-laden Bo’ai
Special District and the art galleries down the east area’s lane and
alley grid; experiencing unique beauty of art and humanity of
Taipei in the heated summer.
Zhongshan & Shilin Museum Tour
Zhongshan N. Road, built in the Japanese colonial period, was
originally called the “Imperial Envoy Road.” The camphor and
Chinese sweet gum shade trees that line the avenue give it a
relaxed ambience despite the busy traffic. From its beginning
in the city core out to Shilin District, the route is also rich in
museums, showcasing everything from historical artifacts to
modern art.
❶National Palace Museum
The National Palace Museum is built in Chinese-palace architectural style. The
first through third floors have exhibition spaces. On the fourth is the Sanxitang
Teahouse. The museum’s collection are over 650,000 and inherited from China’s
Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, which have been praised as “treasure
vault of the Chinese culture,” and made it a tourist must-visit.

first private museum focused on the nation’s indigenous peoples. In addition
to its extensive collection of indigenous-culture artifacts, the museum stages a
diversity of educational sessions and other activities to raise awareness of Taiwan
indigenous culture.

Art Touring
❹Shilin Official Residence
In the Japanese colonial period this was the Shilin Horticultural Experimental Station;
later it became the official residence of former ROC President and Madame Chiang
Kai-shek. Because Madame loved roses, expansive rose gardens were set up, and
today rose and chrysanthemum shows are regularly staged, along with other smallscale flower shows. The strong Chinese traditional-culture look inside the main
residence has been retained, contrasting with the Western-style exterior, blending
aesthetically with the surrounding greenery.
Add: 60, Fulin Rd., Taipei City
Tel: (02)2881-2512, 2883-6340
❺Shilin Tourist Night Market
Taipei’s largest night market, visitors taste-test their way through
a grand emporium of snack treats from all Taiwan localities. The
authentic delicious food such as “little bun wrapped in big bun,” Shanghai pan-fried
stuffed buns, oyster omelets, deep-fried chicken cutlets, tempura, pearl milk tea,
shaved-ice treats, making here become a must-go place to taste local treats.

❻Taipei Expo Park / Maji Maji Square
Taipei Expo Park is made up of much of the area used for the 2010 Taipei Int’l
Flora Expo: the Yuanshan Park Area, Fine Arts Park Area, and Xinsheng Park Area.
Remaining original elements include 3D plant-and-flower walls, sculpted flower
walls, Flora Rainbows, and the Sea of Flowers landscape area. Diverse exhibits and
cultural performances are held in the pavilions, and an outdoor farmers’ market
is held on holidays. Snug in a corner is Maji Maji Square, filled with small shops, a
merry-go-round, restaurants and kiosk eateries.

❽Lin An Tai Historical House and Museum
Beyond exploring the cultural customs surrounding engagements, weddings,
and other celebrations, this museum also stages regular DIY cake/pastry sessions,
bringing visitors the joy of crafting their own sweet treats and a glimpse into the
traditional Taiwanese cake and pastry culture.
Built in the Qing dynasty, this is one of Taiwan’s foremost examples of traditional
south Fujian-style residential architecture. Visitors meander the complex enjoying
the swallowtail roofs and elaborate stone/wood carving. The folk-culture artifacts in
the rooms provide a glimpse into yesteryear living. The grounds are a fine example
of old-time south Fujian-style gardens. Enjoy a cooling outdoor music concert from
15:00~18:00 on August 15th, and Taiwan hand-puppet theater exhibit from August
to October.

Bo’ai Special District Heritage Tour
Bo’ai Special District is the “heart of the Taiwan capital.” In the city’s
Zhongzheng District, the Presidential Office Building is its core. Home
to many seats of key central-government organizations, bringing
architectural gravitas, it is a witness to dramatic historical periods
– notably the Qing Dynasty, Japanese colonial period, and Taiwan
Retrocession (since 1945) era. The enclave’s many architectural
gems have endless stories to tell – time portals linking the Taipei of
yesterday to today.
❶Futai Street Mansion
Futai Street Mansion is one of Taiwan’s oldest examples of Western-style townhouse
architecture. Today a boutique museum, on the second floor is the “Discover Taipei
City” regular exhibit, which juxtaposes old/new maps and photos to explain Taipei’s
evolution. Opening on October 10th, is a special exhibit of photos depicting 1960s’
Yilan County through the lens of master photographer Qiu Jin-yi.
Add: 26, Yanping S. Rd., Taipei City
Tel: (02) 2314-8080 (Closed on Sunday)
❷ARKI GALÉRIA
ARKI GALÉRIA’s distinctive “bare design” interior features paint-removed secondhand
and recycled-wood furniture. The warm, gentle lighting creates a relaxed,
comfortable ambience, making visitors sipping coffee or reading feel as though
sitting in their own home. Irregularly scheduled exhibitions and other cultural events
are staged in the exhibit hall. This has become one of Taipei’s hottest new-style
cultural-creative venues.

the period when Dr. Sun Yat-sen stayed here, pictures depict his time in Taipei, and
various precious representative Sun artifacts are in place, including a tea table and

pine and plum trees that nicely contrast with the arcade and arch bridge.

❹No.1 Wellington Street
Reproducing the graceful culture of old-time Hong Kong-style tea
restaurants, British-style trappings are used to evoke 1950s/1960s London,
and an English/Hong Kong fusion is brought to the Cantonese dishes and inexpensive,
authentic classic dim sum selections. The retro atmosphere and tastes are delicious.

This café is a Taipei icon for Russian food and culture. The 1F confectionery sells traditional
Russian baked items; the 2F café offers Russian foods, including borscht and sirloin cooked
Russian-style, presenting you authentic Russian flavors. The café’s soft sweets were much
loved by Faina Chiang Fang-liang, wife of former President Chiang Ching-kuo. A preferred
venue for the Chiangs to receive Chinese and foreign dignitaries and hold dinner functions,
this was also long a haunt for Taipei artists and literati.

king – its hawthorn berry, licorice, smoked plums, and other ingredients are together boiled
six hours. The old shop, in a nostalgia-inducing Baroque-style building, offers one-of-a-kind
flavors in its house sour-plum juice and tri-color ice-cream.

Chocolate Banana Pie
Lucky Gift's founder learned their trade from
Nagasaki Hompo in Japan, and became
known for hand-made honey cakes when
they returned to Taiwan. Round nougat and
pineapple cakes are the bakery's most popular
offerings. Lucky Gift's “Green Bean Cake”, whose
thick crust enfolds green beans and braised
meat, once won the Taipei Unique Snack
Champion award in 2014 with its mixture of
savory and sweet flavors, each accentuating
the other. Their latest product, the “chocolate
banana pie”, wraps sweet Taiwanese banana in
chocolate cake and crisp pie crust; every bite
tastes of sweet banana.

Innovative Nougat
KT BAKERY is a long-established bakery chain which still makes pastries and bread by
hand, and has made its name with traditional pineapple and scallion bread. It sells
over 10,000 breads, cakes and pastries every day. Their latest cake, the “Innovative
Cheese Cake”, in which cream from Hokkaido, Japan is matched with taro paste
cheese, rich coffee and sweet chestnut, is an exquisite symphony of taste, suffused
with the scent of milk.
Saint Peter's founder, Ruan Jing-tian, who likes
to develop new sweets and has won countless
awards, has invented almost ten flavors of nougat.
His latest creation, “Golden strawberry” nougat,
includes uniquely-textured brown rice popcorn,
dried strawberries, macadamia nuts, and caramel.
It has become a surprise favorite since it does not
stick to one's teeth. “Black gal” nougat combines
brown rice popcorn, sesame, peanuts, and black
sugar cookies, resulting in rich layers of flavor.

He found that he felt much better when he added ginger juice to

the ginger he grows is able to absorb the essence of the earth.

Once head chef at a 5-star restaurant, after taking
over operations at what was formerly the “Big Teapot
Range Chicken Castle,” Master A-Yi made this a
“tea culture restaurant.” Breaking through culinary
convention, he’s acquired “tea cuisine expert” renown,
has brought Maokong’s unique cuisine international
recognition and was also invited by Discovery
Channel to introduce distinctive cuisine. His “creative
theme cuisine” showcases flowers, fruits, and tea,
bringing much pleasure to food connoisseurs.
