Proper Placement of Trash Containers The City works cooperatively with residents and property owners to maintain the appearance of residential neighborhoods. This partnership helps preserve La Mirada as an attractive and well maintained community. The City contracts with EDCO Disposal for its trash and waste disposal needs. Trash pick-up days vary throughout neighborhoods, and street sweepers clean City streets on days after trash cans have been emptied. Trash cans left in the street after they have been emptied contribute to neighborhood blight, and also prevent the street sweepers from cleaning those curbs and gutters. City codes preclude waste containers from being placed curbside or anywhere in the front yard for more than 48 hours. For questions regarding trash containers being left out or other services related to EDCO Disposal, contact the City’s Code Enforcement Division at 562-943-0131. 2 Spring Beautification Winners The Spring Beautification program recognized winners and honorees during an awards ceremony on June 13 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The Spring Beautification Awards celebrates the beauty of La Mirada’s neighborhoods, businesses, houses of worship, and schools. Within each of the 13 neighborhoods volunteer judges selected honorees, and one most outstanding winner. Apartments/condominiums, houses of worship and schools, and businesses/professional buildings were also judged. All properties were reviewed for pride of ownership and creativity. A total of 277 properties were recognized for high standards of exterior maintenance and care. Residents are reminded to follow all City regulations. The discharging of fireworks on City-owned property including parks, sidewalks and City facilities, is prohibited. The use of “safe and sane” fireworks is only allowed on July 4 from 3 to 10 p.m. Streets may not be blocked off to accommodate parties and large gatherings. Public drinking of alcoholic beverages and public intoxication are prohibited. Residents hosting large parties that disturb the peace may be billed for the costs of breaking up the party. Individuals who discharge fireworks or conduct celebrations on private property without the owner’s permission will receive a $1,000 citation. All laws will be proactively enforced. Citations will be issued and arrests will be made for any violations. Residents are encouraged to take an active part in reporting criminal activity. To report a crime in progress, dial 911. To report illegal fireworks or other criminal activity, call the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station at (562) 902-2960. National Night Out August 4 The City will hold its annual National Night Out against crime event on Thursday, August 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Regional Park. The event will be held during the Concert in the Park. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The event brings residents and law enforcement together to heighten crime and drug prevention and build participation in local anti-crime programs. Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, La Mirada Public Safety Team, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and the Neighborhood Watch Program will be in attendance. Free fingerprinting for kids will also be available at the Public Safety booth. For more information, contact the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station at (562) 902-2960. 6 Report Graffiti (562) 943-1557 La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station (562) 902-2960 Stay Active, Stay Safe Summer is here, and many residents are staying active by walking or jogging in the early morning and late evening hours. If staying active is part of your routine, here are some precautions to keep in mind: • Do not go alone. You are less likely to become a victim of a crime if you have a workout partner, whether human or pet. • Avoid running with earphones. Loud music can distract you and prevent you from detecting potential threats. It can also weaken your reaction time. • Change up your route. Taking the same route day after day can cause you to be less aware of your surroundings. If you are unsure of various routes you can take, consider downloading a smartphone application to help you find new routes. • Run or walk against traffic. This ensures that you are visible to cars, buses, and trucks, and can prevent potential traffic collisions. • Learn self-defense. Classes are regularly offered and advertised in the quarterly La Mirada Living city newsletter. • Carry identification with you. Many types of running shorts have small pockets to carry identification. Summer Safety Youth Activities Captain K-9 Program Recruits Dog Owners The next Captain K-9 meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at Gardenhill Park at 6 p.m. Dog owners and dogs are encouraged to attend. The “Captain K-9” Dog Walker Watch program encourages recreational dog walkers to serve as an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement. Captain K-9 participants are trained to effectively observe and report suspicious activity while on routine walks with their dogs and how to best help dispatchers and officers respond to potential criminal activity. For more information on the Captain K-9 Dog Walker Watch program, contact Safety Education Officer Mary Cipres at (562) 902-2986. The City will be hosting a Summer Safety series for youth at local parks. Presentations emphasize safe behavior and cover a variety of topics. The safety activities will be held from 2:15 to 3 p.m. every Thursday, July 7 through August 11 at the following sites: • July 7 Windermere Park - Animal Safety • July 14 Gardenhill Park - Earthquake Preparedness • July 21 Frontier Park - Fire Safety • July 28 Windermere Park - Pedestrian Safety • August 4 Gardenhill Park - Insect Awareness • August 11 Frontier Park - Personal Safety For additional information, contact the Community Sheriff’s Station at (562) 902-2960. “Like” to Get Instant Updates on Facebook! facebook.com/LaMiradaPublicSafety City Of La Mirada, 13700 La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada, CA 90638 www.cityoflamirada.org La Mirada City Council Steve De Ruse, Mayor Ed Eng, Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Deal, Councilmember Lawrence P.
