Dear Club Member - Atlantic Beach Country Club
September 2014, Issue 4
Dear Club Member,
First, I would like to tell you how excited I am to be a part of Atlantic Beach Country Club! I would also like to
thank you for the warm reception you have extended me over the past few weeks. It truly has been great to be
back home in Atlantic Beach. For those who may not know of my background, I am a proud graduate of Atlantic
Beach Elementary and Fletcher High School and learned to play the great game of golf from the late John Beckmann
at Selva Marina Country Club. John, his staff and the Club were an important part of my love for the game of golf
and subsequently my career in the business. Both sides of my family moved to the Beaches in the 1940’s and, in my
early years, I grew up on 9th Street and later Sea Oats Drive. I guess it can be said that I have come full circle and am
thrilled to be back home.
Following college, my career began at Sawgrass Country Club where I was an Assistant Golf Professional. I then spent
18 years at Amelia Island Plantation in various roles from Head Golf Professional at Long Point to Director of Sports
Operations. I returned to Sawgrass Country Club in 2004 as Director of Golf & Sports and, over the past three years,
served as General Manager at The Golf Club at North Hampton. My wife Sheila and our son and daughter, Kyle and
Lauren are excited about our return to the area as well.
I am happy to report to you that work is progressing as scheduled on the clubhouse and golf course. Our Clubhouse
contractor RPC, golf course builder MacCurrach Construction, course architect Erik Larsen and maintenance/grow in
contractor Valley Crest have been great to work with and are considered the area’s best in their fields.
We are fortunate to have them all on board and I believe you will love the finished product.
We continue to feel that the new Club will be open by the end of the year. The golf course
opening date will be largely up to Mother Nature as weather will play a key role in
determining the exact date.
Our main focus in the next month will be finalizing a 2014 and 2015 club operating budget,
establishing the operating standards of ABCC and securing our department heads in Food &
Beverage, Accounting and Fitness. We are fortunate to report to you that we have Melissa
Bryan as our Membership Director, Spencer Brown as Head Golf Professional and Reb Phillips
as Head Tennis Professional. All have done a great job in working through the construction
of the new Atlantic Beach Country Club as we prepare for our Grand Opening!

Member Golf Tournaments
Atlantic Beach Country Club will pride itself on hosting and running first class golf tournaments. Please see the future tournament schedule
below: (Dates TBD.)
Men’s Member-Guest Tournament
The tournament committee, golf committee, members, and staff of Atlantic Beach Country Club recognize this tournament as the PREMIERE
event at our club. We take the opportunity to showcase our club and course for 3 days of golf, fun, and much more.
The field is set at sixty teams consisting of one ABCC Member and a Guest. Each team will play one nine-hole match with the other teams in
their flight, making five matches total. The team with the highest point total in each flight will be declared the “Flight Champion” and play in
the Shoot-Out to determine the Member-Guest Champion.
Bob Meeker Invitational
This tournament had its beginnings in 1961 and now hosts one of the best competitive fields in Northeast Florida. The tournament began as
Selva Marina Country Club Men’s Invitational and in 1997 the name was changed to honor long-time club member Bob Meeker, who shot his
age over 225 times.
This year will mark the 54th year of the event and will be the FIRST year it will be competed on the NEW Championship Golf Course at Atlantic
Beach Country Club.
The Bob Meeker Invitational is an invitation only event primarily for elite amateur players and ABCC members of all handicaps – not just low
handicap players. Divisions you can select to compete in: Championship, Men’s Flights, Senior Men’s Championship, or Senior Men’s Flights.
Club Championship
A true test of golf with a 36-Hole Stroke Play format to determine the elite golfers at Atlantic Beach Country Club. Members can compete any
of the 5 Divisions: Tee Gifts, Breakfast, Lunch, On-Course Prizes, and Flight Payouts are included.
• Championship • Men’s (49 and Under)
• Super Senior Men’s (70+)
• Senior Men’s (50-69) • Ladies
Men’s Member-Member Tournament
Sixty teams consisting of two ABCC Members compete over two days in a Best 1 of 2 ball format. Each team will play 18-holes with the other
teams in their flight and the best two day 36-hole score will win their flight. As with the Member-Guest Tournament, each flight winner will
compete in a Shoot-Out to determine the MemberMember Champion.
Atlantic Beach Country Club
Battle of the Beach
This is a team event with another private club on
“this side of the ditch”. A Ryder Cup format and team
selection process will be used for this event.

Atlantic Beach Country Club Tennis News
Match season has begun! We have limited match play at the Woods throughout the Fall
that will slightly impact court availability. REB will give advance warning in the event of
a court crunch, but on home match days we will have to work together. Please see home
match dates under the “Team Schedule” section of the newsletter.
There will only be one court open between 9-11am on the Wednesday’s that the Country
Club B Women are at home. We know that we can all work together on this and, when Fall
temperatures arrive, starting a little later will be much easier. Thank you in advance for your
understanding and flexibility.

Sea Turtle Adventures in Atlantic Beach
Having been a member of the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol
for many years, I have been treated to a variety of
interesting experiences with Sea Turtles. Recently, as I
was patrolling before dawn in Atlantic Beach, I saw
something extraordinary. ONE set of Loggerhead tracks!
Usually one sees two sets of tracks, one incoming and
one returning. This Loggerhead mother was still up on
the beach, laying her eggs in the egg chamber she had
just dug with her rear flippers. When all of her eggs,
about 100, were deposited, she packed the sand over the
nest with her rear flippers, and then used her front flippers to throw sand all over the nesting area. Then she
headed back to the sea, hauling her heavy body across the sand and into the ocean where once again she will “fly”
through her watery home. The tears she shed as she left her nest were not for the kids she left behind in the sand.
Extra salt exits her body in this fashion. The children will emerge in a couple of months. Male hatchlings never
return to the shore, and the females won’t be ready for motherhood until they are in their mid-twenties. They will
likely return to the same general area from which they scrambled into the ocean so long ago.
The Sea Turtle season in our area runs from May through October. Beachfront lighting must be off or shielded
during these months, and flashlights should not be used on the beach. Sea Turtles love the dark! Holes on the
beach are great hazards for both mother turtles and the hatchlings. Please fill in all holes. If you see any adult
turtles or hatchlings in jeopardy on the seashore, please call the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol at (904)613-6081. Stray
hatchlings should be placed in a small bucket with 1-2” of slightly moist sand and covered lightly with a cloth. Call
the BSTP immediately for retrieval. Do not try to put hatchlings or adult turtles in the ocean.
