Scholarship to help science students In honor of Merchantville native Jonathan Page, who died at the age of 32 alongside his wife in a California car accident in September 2010, family and friends will host a Beef and Beer fundraiser at the Woodbine Swim Club, Pennsauken, on Saturday, Aug. 25, 8 p.m.-midnight. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Jonathan Page Memorial Scholarship Fund, which helps graduating seniors at Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Page’s alma mater, pursue a degree in science. Page earned a degree in physics from Cornell University in 2000. He worked as an engineer for Communications & Power Industries, Inc. in Palo Alto, Calif., developing anti-missile systems for the Navy. This year’s recipient is Joe Meloni of Sewell, who will begin his pursuit of a degree in engineering at Drexel University in the fall. For more information about the event or to RSVP, contact Risa Page at [email protected] or visit the Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/JonathanPageMemorialScho larship. S. Evans On Jan. 5, 2010 Wildwood Catholic High School received notice from the Camden Diocese that it would be closing at the end of the school year. That decision motivated community members, alumni and parents to take action, and the efforts have been paying off. Their fund raising efforts had that decision reversed within months and the school is now operating with surplus funds. A year after the plan to close was announced, enrollment was at an all time low of 133. Enrollment increased to 156 the following February. This year the incoming freshman class is expected to be over 40 students — a small group but a significant increase over the the 28 freshman last September. Total enrollment is expected to be 163 students. “I’m very happy that all the hard work is paying off in enrollment and financial help from the local community,” Father Joseph D. Wallace, president of the school, said. To get that boost in enrollment Anthony Degatano, the Dean of Academics, and Kevin Quinn, advancement director, have been visiting local elementary schools to spread the word. Wildwood Catholic administrators are proud of the turnaround, and eagerly point to the success of their students, including the ample scholarship money they earn. The International Program will bring 12-15 students from Europe and Asia. Quinn says they are a great boost both culturally and academically to the student population. The foreign students have a great command of the English language and are excellent writers. They also gain a lot from their American counterparts. Administrators say WCHS maintains a high standard, offering college preparation courses that are interesting and challenging. In addition to the advanced placement program (AP), two courses will now be offered from Seton Hall and Kean University; that is, Real World Technology from Seton Hall and Environmental Sustainability from Kean. WCHS is only one of three schools in the state that is offering the latter course. Both courses will be accepted as transfer credits at any college. Students can also participate in 10 athletic programs for girls and nine for boys, plus forensics, drama, music, student council, numerous clubs and the school newspaper and yearbook. The Crusaders have won awards in various competitions and these programs are offered to the students in all four years. Quinn said, “We are trying to help the students to continue their education with traditional academics plus life skills. We are an alternative to public education in southern New Jersey – a tuition charging school – so we must prove we are better. Adding 40 to 45 students may not look like much but we have a lot to offer.” Said Degatano, “We have encouraged students to visit and shadow our stu- dents for a day. The new innovative programs are getting the attention of the community. The professional seminars of law, medicine, research and writing, coupled with the college courses from Kean and Seton Hall, are reaping positive reactions.” “As a school, we must realize that in order to grow and maintain the interest and loyalty of the community we must be better than any neighboring public school. In terms of tuition, we must be $7,000 better than any other school,” he said. Summer Camp Many Catholic schools host camps for children during the summer months. Hartman is involved in various church and community service organizations, and has mentored young people in her role as a Catholic educator, youth minister and advisor in the U.S. Congressional Award Medal program. She has also served as adjunct professor at both Cumberland County College and Montclair State University. “I am grateful for the wonderful opportunity to serve as principal of Christ the King Regional School and look forward to embracing the responsibilities as its educational leader for many years to come,” Hartman said, adding that “it will be a real blessing to work with such a dedicated faculty and staff and to partner with them and our supportive caring parents in providing a quality faith-infused education for each and every child entrusted to our Catholic school.” John Paul II Regional School… s Provides a premier, academic, faith based program s Prepares students for success in high school, college and life s Offers a safe, faith-filled environment s Enriches students academically, socially and spiritually Registrations Welcome Call to learn more about… s/URFULLDAYANDYEAROLDPRESCHOOLPROGRAMS s/UR%XTENDED$AY0ROGRAMBEGINNINGAT AMUNTILPM s/URFULLRANGECURRICULUMFROMSPECIALNEEDSTO advanced math s&INANCIAL!IDOPTIONS Call NOW to Schedule Your Visit For more information, call Ms. Joan Perry at: (856) 783-3088 or email to: [email protected] 7ARWICK2OADs3TRATFORD.EW*ERSEYsWWWJPRSORGs A SCHOOL YOU CAN HAVE “FAI†H” IN!
