for the Micallef family
Every school is a community, a
network of relationships connecting
students, parents and family members
with teachers, the principal and other
school staff. Unfortunately Simone
Micallef, a member of our school
community lost her battle with cancer
during the school holidays and it has
affected numerous people. I have
been asked by many parents how they
can support the Micallef family and
we thought a food drive would stock
their cupboards and support
Catherine (sister) in her care of the
children.
We wish them all the best in the
coming months as they come to terms
with their loss.
Maria Green
You did it!
We have had our best year ever with the Earn and Learn stickers. We have 296 full
booklets so this will give us double the amount of school supplies this year compared
to last year.
Christmas Hampers
Our fundraiser for the school this term will be our raffle for our Christmas Hampers. We
are asking for donation of food items, toys and decorations. A booklet of 20 tickets will be
sent home to each family in Week 4 of this term at a cost of 50 cents per ticket. Extra
tickets will be available from the office.
School Shades
K-2 have received their school sunglasses thanks to the kind donation from the Lalic
family. We know this will reduce the amount of damage to young eyes and prevent
problems in later life. We will use our Xmas hamper raffle money to supply Years 3 and
4 with their glasses. Glasses will be kept at school to avoid loss.
Skoolbag APP
To make communication easier we have purchased a program called ‘skoolbag app’. The app
is downloaded onto your phone and pushes out instant messages and updates as well as
newsletters, permission notes, etc. Attached to this newsletter is information on how you
can download the app to your phone.
Music Bus
The Music Bus will be holding a demonstration day for parents, staff and
students on Friday, 9th October.
Details of the day are:
• 9am – 9:30am Parent Information Session – parents can view the bus and resources
and speak to the teacher
• 9:30am – 11:30am – Students will take part in a short interactive session on the bus.
Students will be able to enrol in the regular keyboard, guitar, drums, singing or ukulele
classes as well as the all new READY to ROCK program.
At the end of the day, the children will bring home an Expression of Interest form. If you are
interested in enrolling, you will need to return that to the school office within 7 days.
For more general information about The Music Bus program you can contact them directly
on 1300 168 742 or visit www.themusicbus.com.au

Chess Tournament
Paul Davey has kindly organised for our school to participate in a chess tournament
to be held at Campbelltown Catholic Club on 2nd November. We will enter two
teams and be represented by Liam D’Arcy, Peter Lynch, Reilly Rowbotham, Lachlan Brincat,
Zac Harding and Mitchell Welsh. Good luck boys!
Bike/Scooter Safety
It is a legal requirement for all students to wear a helmet riding their bikes to and from
school. I have called Narellan Police to seek advice on this matter and we will be calling all
parents who do not comply with this legislation.
All students who ride a scooter to school are not to ride it through the school playground
as bumping into someone could cause a serious accident. I request that all parents ensure
their children understand this school rule.

Kindergarten Update!
Kindergarten have been learning so much over the last term and we
are almost at the end of our first year in ‘big school’!
Our Reading groups have been powering along, with all of us
becoming better readers! Here we are in action:
Mathsmad groups have had a shuffle and we are having fun in these
lessons! Some of us have a different teacher or are working with a
different group of kids. In our class maths lessons, we are focussing
on multiplication and division at the moment (forming and sharing
groups), length and shapes.
Last term we all did a fantastic job in our school musical item ‘Under
the Sea’ and looked awesome in our costumes!
We look pretty snazzy in our new school sunglasses and they will
protect our eyes from the sun in terms 4 and 1.
We had an exciting visit to the Life Education van last week and met
Healthy Harold! We have a booklet with lessons to learn more about
things we saw in the visit, which we are doing with Mr Barr on
Thursdays. Here we are doing the first lesson in the booklets:
This is our class on Pirate Day last term!
Ahoy me hearties!
Can’t wait for all the things we are going to do this term!

End of Year Celebration - Movie Day!
As a change from the ‘Big Day In’ of previous years, the staff will be
congratulating and rewarding a whole year of hard work and great behaviour by
taking students on an excursion to the park and movies!
When: Friday 11th December
Where: Elyard Reserve Playground for a picnic, then to United
Cinemas at Narellan Town Centre
Travel: By bus
Cost: TBA
Dress: Full summer school uniform
Please bring: School hat, water or drink bottle, own lunch and snacks in a
small backpack or usual school bag.
Students need to be at school by normal morning bell time (9.30) and will return
before the afternoon bell.
At the movies, we will be seeing a pre-release of Disney Pixar’s new movie The
Good Dinosaur (which opens on Boxing Day) and students will receive a choctop ice cream in the movie.
Due to fantastic fundraising efforts during the year, the SRC are able to
subsidise the cost of this excursion.
Payment requests and permission notes will follow in the coming weeks.
Looking forward to a great day!
Mrs Hooper and SRC
Talent Quest
We will be having our Talent Quest in the last week of school (Tuesday 15th December). If
students would like to enter, they need to have an item ready for an audition one week before
this, on Tuesday 8th December, where 3 teachers will decide as a panel which items can go
through to the Talent Quest (Oakdale X Factor-style!) Students may only go in a max of 2
items each. So start planning now!
Any queries please see Mrs Hooper.
NRMA Road Safety Day visit
The NRMA will be visiting the school to provide Road Safety Education on Thursday 29th
October. This is at no cost. All students will be issued with a workbook and drink bottle
on the day. During the performance there will be experiments conducted with eggs. If
your child has an egg vapour allergy could you please ensure the school is notified
immediately so alternatives can be used. We request that your child brings their bike
helmet to school as they will be practising how to fit them correctly as part of the show.
Parents are welcome to attend the 9:35-10:35 session.
Are you safe wearing a skateboard helmet on your bike?
During our visit to over 300 schools as part of our Science & Road Safety Day tour, we have
the unique opportunity to see what types of helmets students are wearing when riding their
bikes. We were surprised to learn that many wore skate helmets (the dome-shaped ones)
when bike riding. When looking inside the helmets we were even more surprised to find that
some of these DIDN’T meet Australian Safety Standards.
There is no Australian Safety Standard for skate helmets and this is of concern as many
children and parents choose these thinking they offer the same protection as bike helmets.
Some skate helmets do meet the standards - there is a sticker inside confirming this - while
others don’t. Sadly some of the ones that don’t are much more expensive and chosen
because they are perceived to be cool and more stylish.
So the message to children, parents, teachers and the community is to be aware.
Read more about this issue in our blog.
Final two weeks of the Bike Artwork competition

standards with your students?

their school before enjoying a fun bicycle workshop with the class. A group of 16 runners up
