smartphone), or have a business without
internet, or even run a business without a
website. It’s a bit scary to wonder where
are we heading in the future.
Y
ou know its inevitable when the
clocks go back that winter is on
the way, but snow already! Its a
little bit of a shock to the legs, so how
about those poor flowers… I’m sure they
weren’t told about the cold snap.
I am just back from Interflora’s
conference in Rotorua and it was great
once again to catch up with fellow florists
and flower lovers. We had a great time
sharing ideas and knowledge with
everyone around us. On the Saturday
morning, District 3 ran a business session
that was very clever. In groups around a
table, we spent 30 minutes at each group,
going from table to table learning and
sharing different subjects. Internet,
Facebook, Photography, Physiotherapy
and Interflora. Great subjects to get your
teeth into. It’s so interesting to see how
influential the internet and social media
are, and that they are dominating our
lives. In fact each subject we went to, the
connection between the two was right in
front of us.
Gone are the days when you wouldn’t
leave home without a cell phone (sorry
It was inspiring to still see stunning
floristry coming from clever florists. The
passion is still there and very much so in
the next generation. Interflora held a
“Florist of the Future” competition and a
big congratulations to the winner and
competitors who entered.
Another highlight was an awesome
demonstration by Mark Pampling of
Australia. He gave us great inspiration to
take back to work and share with our
staff. Mark, you are truly an entertainer.
Great stories and floristry going hand in
hand.
Well there is a little bit of work to get on
with. Mother’s Day is around the corner
and things need sorting, making,
creating, teaching, buying, and selling.
Hope all your Mums get to see a little of
you at Mother’s Day...and to all the
Mums out there, I hope you get some big
hugs.

Co-ordinator’s
Report
Welcome to May and Mother’s Day, our last big event
before winter. Although the sudden change and drop
in temperature midway through April reminded me
winter was coming.
We must
continue to
learn and be
inspired, by
both people
and things
around us.
Take it all in,
learn as much
as you can.
It has been a little quite in my corner as Assessment
Co-ordinator the last few months with not a great deal
going on in the way of exams or teaching. We have had our first hand in
date for the year for folios January 31. Congratulations to Leeanne
Shann, Tawa, Wellington for a beautifully presented folio in Level 3.
It is always heart-warming to know students are out there still studying.
The next important date on the NZPF calendar is the written for all
Levels Saturday 4 July. If you are planning on sitting your written please
fill in the form on page 15 and post to Julie Ainsworth our secretary along
with payment for your paper. NZPF needs to sort a venue for you and a
timekeeper, therefore the more time we have to do this the better. As the
saying goes “there is no time like the present” payment can be made via
internet banking, cheque or credit card.
This Mother’s Day we have a family wedding which we are all very
excited about. My niece is thrilled I am a florist because it is such a busy
time for florists, she managed to pin me down and book me in, so I will be
joining you, my fellow florists in the mayhem and crazy times working
over Mother’s Day.
For those of you who know me you will know that my two most favourite
occasions are Weddings and Funerals. I know it seems like a weird
combination but I love the fact that as florists we have the honour to
create something amazing for the beginning of a new life for a very
special couple when it comes to weddings. A wedding I recently did,
started out being a little tough to find out exactly what the bride wanted.
Page 5
The consultation went on for a few hours and around in circles a little, but finally I found
out what she really wanted to carry. It was an elegant White King Protea. I thought,
Easter is a little early for King Proteas. I rung an amazing grower we have in my region
and talked to her about the possibility of a White King Protea.
The answer was as I thought, “no Megan it is
a little early”, but do you know what, a week
and a half later I received a call to say they
had found two White King Proteas and they
would probably be ready for Easter. My bride
was over the moon, it wasn’t about cutting
costs, it was about having exactly what she
wanted. "Hallelujah” another happy
bride.
For funerals we have the opportunity to
create the most beautiful tribute’s for the
person
who has passed, we can create something
truly unique and reflective of the person’s life,
a piece that enriches the family and service.
Of course we have to have the experience and
passion to do these special events and
tributes, therefore we must continue to learn
and be inspired, by both people and things
around us. Take it all in, learn as much as
you can.

Happy
Mothers Day
To All Florists
in business I too reflect on the
number of Mums that are no
longer here for this Mother’s
Day.
M
other’s Day is fast
approaching. For
me,
this
year
marks my 23rd Mother’s
Day at Flower Arrangements
in Dannevirke, which began
its days in a small back
porch at my home!
My own Mum died sadly
before I opened my shop, and
as the years have passed by
We as Florists are very
privileged I think, to be in
business not only surrounded
by a beautiful product and so
much colour. Today it is
bitterly cold outside, and yet I
see vases of Tulips, Freesia,
Stock, Fragrant Lillies...and so
much colour! How lucky we
are.
Indeed we have an important
job as messenger between
Sender and Recipient to
produce a beautiful gift. It
must be our best quality, our
best presentation, and our best
professional service, because
that is what keeps us leaders
in our field in today’s very
competitive world.
and
the
Late Yvonne
McGillivray (Forget Me Not
Flowers, Palmerston North) who
taught me so much about
presentation, workmanship and
great customer service.
I continue to be inspired on a
daily basis and I would
encourage any students out
there to take advantage of all
opportunities available through
NZPF. Megan and her team are
the best in our field who
alongside your bosses will help
your Floristry career fly. They
are so much fun and give up
their time so willingly!
Enjoy Mother’s Day everyone, I
especially applaud Florist Mums
who juggle family life, their
businesses and so much more….
You truly deserve the biggest
and best bouquets ever.
Mary Ritchie
I am very thankful to NZPF.
Although my certificates are a
little old and faded, they hang
proudly on my shop wall. I was
always encouraged to do my
exams by my great teachers

Wedding shows
W
edding shows, Love
them? Hate them?
Would love to but
don't know where to start or if
they're worth it? I was
convinced years ago to try out
with a stand at a Wellington
Wedding Expo. I was unsure
as I felt the cost was very high
and there is no guarantee if
you get any weddings out of it,
but I loved it and have done
them repeatedly every year
since. The buzz of the big
crowds,
competition
excitement, meeting new
people in the wedding
industry, vendors, and like
minded creative minds has
been invaluable. My biggest
thrill is designing… something
new, exciting, how I would
design a wedding if I had
complete creative control and
an unlimited budget. Giving
people ideas of what you could
possibly do, if they entrusted
their wedding with me. I love
coming up with ideas on the
spot, showing people that I am
full of wonderfully creative
ideas for their wedding day. I
know some people would
disapprove of this, stating florists and stylists should
charge for their time and
ideas, and not give away too
much. But I give them a taste
of what we are capable of, on
the spot. I have won several
Top stand awards for styling
and design at these Expo's,
winning free stands at future
Expo's and Advertising
packages. The accolades alone
however for winning these
awards are an award in their
own right. Winning against
other top florists, wedding
planners, and event stylists is
an amazing feeling along with
showing people and other
vendors attending the Expo
and prize giving just what we
are capable of.
We change our design for
every Expo by spending a lot
of time brain storming,
shopping around, and coming
up with a new look, something
we have not done before. We
work hard and I usually have
to call on extra staff. Some to
run the shop, others to help
with set up and pack down,
and now that we have a
reputation, we usually have a
number of other stands to
demonstrate design and set up
as well. Having a few nice
strong boys can be a lifesaver
Page 10
on these days, as there can be large pieces, furniture etc. to be moved and set up, and finally, also
packed away at the end of the day. (Wine also helps at the end of the day! )
The biggest reward is the people I have met, like minded businesses that are all working together to
cater for a small wedding market. I have found sometimes that the connections with the other
vendors are more valuable than the wedding bookings on the day, and a referral from a
photographer or a venue can be more valuable than general advertising. I have made invaluable
business connections with venue hire companies and planners, who now solely recommend me as
their preferred florist, something money cannot buy.
Do I get wedding bookings out of them, Yes, a lot !
