businesses, including the premiere award of the evening,
the Emmy Award. Community awards are also given and
include the Project of the Year (Economic Impact, Expansions, Remodels, New Jobs, New Product or Tourism
Impact), Business Person or Entrepreneur of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Community Involvement or
Service Project Award and Diversity Award.
In addition to the community awards that are presented, two additional awards that have already been
presented will be featured. Those include the Small Business of the Year, given at the Small Business
Appreciation Breakfast in May, and the Manufacturer of the Year that was awarded at the Manufacturers
Appreciation Luncheon in October.

The team at the Greater Burlington Partnership would like to wish you a Merry
Christmas and a happy holiday season. This has been an exciting year for the
organization and the community, and your ongoing support has been remarkable.
As the year winds down, it is important to reflect on the organization successes
from sold out events, the announcement of multiple redevelopment projects,
record-breaking tourism numbers and numerous other achievements. These
things would not be possible without the visionary leadership of hundreds of
volunteers. Thank you for your commitment to the area and to this organization.
As your family makes its purchasing decisions this season, the Partnership

employing our friends and neighbors, pay local property taxes, and financially
support a number of community, school and youth activities. These benefits are

Tourism Expenditures Shows 14 Percent Increase
The 2011 Economic Impact of Travel on Iowa Counties Report
was released by the Iowa Economic Development Authority in
late October. Greater Burlington generated $118.25 million in
tourism expenditures in 2011, resulting in a 14 percent increase from
2010. Tourism expenditures include public transportation, auto
transportation, lodging, food service, entertainment/recreation and
general retail.
Tourism also produced 1,000 jobs in Des Moines County in 2011 and
$6.36 million in state and local tax receipts.
Des Moines County is ranked 13th out of 99 counties for total
expenditures. Tourism is a major economic driver for Greater
Burlington and the State of Iowa. It has become a $7.2 billion industry
statewide, increasing 10.3 percent from 2010.
“This is the second largest increase in tourism expenditures that
Des Moines County has seen in recent history,” said Beth Nickel,
Executive Director, Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“This accomplishment shows that tourism is a major industry to the
community. It is important that we continue to market the community
as a destination so numbers continue to rise.”

Thought
Significant Milestone
Your Chamber of Commerce has reached a significant
milestone. This fall, the membership ranks of the
organization surpassed the 700 mark. From all accounts,
this is the largest membership roll achieved in the
organization’s 90+ years. This membership level has been
a goal of the board of directors for quite some time, and
the milestone is certainly something to celebrate.
There are likely a number of reasons why membership
continues to grow.

organization surpassed the 700 mark. From
all accounts, this is the largest membership roll
achieved in the organization’s 90+ years.
First of all, I think this growth speaks to the organization’s
relevance. The board of directors, volunteers and staff are
constantly evaluating programming, reinventing events
and expanding the audience for our print and online
materials.
The volunteers of the Total Resource Campaign (TRC)
should be commended for their role in reaching this
milestone. The TRC was designed to provide members
with all of the marketing and sponsorship opportunities
for the year during a short period in the fall. As part of the
effort, more than 25 volunteers called on new businesses,
former members, and those that have never been a
Chamber member. More than 13 members were added as
a result of these efforts this year alone.
Melissa Schwenker, our Membership Director, should
also receive some praise for her role in expanding our
membership base. Being a Chamber member provides
companies with a number of benefits and services—but
only if they are used. Melissa prides herself on reminding
members about the valuable benefits and consistently
reaches out to ensure we are meeting expectations.

Aside from increasing the membership rolls, there is
another factor critical in reaching the 700 threshold. The
retention of members is just as important as expanding
the ranks. Under Kay Breuer’s leadership, staff and
volunteers made personal contact with more than 75% of
the member businesses and organizations over the last 12
months. These personal touches have provided us with
insight into your needs and your feedback has helped us
continually improve the work that we do.

As our membership base continues to grow, we will
face new challenges. A broader base typically increases
diversity of thought, needs and expectations. Those
expectations will no doubt increase, and continuous
innovation will be required to sustain this growth.
Quantifiable results will be paramount.
A strong Chamber of Commerce is a great thing for the
community. It builds economic momentum, ensures
the interests of business are promoted, and expands the
influence of the community throughout the region and
the state.

Register for Great River Region Events
Join us in Des Moines on January 29 and 30 as we travel to the state capitol to
communicate regional priorities to state legislators and department heads. Key
issues impacting your business and Southeast Iowa will be addressed. The
participation fee of $100 per person will include a Capitol Rotunda Luncheon,

The Greater Burlington Partnership celebrates the conclusion of the
Total Resource Campaign which involved dozens of volunteers and
community leaders. The goal of the initiative was to generate revenue
by selling sponsorships for the Greater Burlington Partnership and
its divisions, the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development,
Convention and Visitors Bureau and Downtown Partners. Volunteers
also sold memberships for the Chamber of Commerce.
“The volunteers were wonderful to work with. We all got to know
one another better, built relationships and had fun doing it,” said Kay
Sackville Breuer, Vice President. “The volunteers used their networks
to better the Partnership and Greater Burlington.”
The Total Resource Campaign provides the revenue to fund Partnership programs, which
are returned to the community in the form of business building events and initiatives with
community wide events.
The business building events and initiatives of the Partnership include the Small Business
Appreciation Breakfast, Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon, annual Community Guide
used in marketing the area to visitors and new residents, Greater Burlington Leadership,
Young Professionals, providing networking opportunities for the areas YP’s ages 21
42, workforce related events including a career fair for 5th and 8th graders and a Teachers
Appreciation Reception. Government Affairs initiatives include Eggs and Issues, a
legislative forum with state legislators, political forums held prior to local elections and the
Elected Public Officials’ Appreciation Reception.
The community-wide events include Friday Fest, the Lighted Holiday
Parade, Living Windows, Santa’s Cottage, Holiday Open House,
Downtown Trick or Treat, the 5 & V Outdoor Cinema, Heritage Fest,
Snake Alley Criterium and Farmers Market.
“This campaign couldn’t be done without the help of volunteers,”
Breuer commented. The volunteers included Lisa Nafziger, Great

Sheila Newman Becomes Program Director
In November, Sheila Newman’s title at the Partnership changed from Existing Business and
Workforce Specialist to Program Director.
“Sheila has been with the organization for about 18 months,” said Jason Hutcheson, President &
CEO. “During this time, she has proven herself incredibly organized with a keen eye for details.
As a result, Sheila will be taking the lead in a number of program areas - particularly within the
economic development division.”
In addition to her current management of the workforce development programs, Newman
will oversee the Annual Business Plan Competition, the Internship Program, and the Student
Volunteer Program. Newman will also keep her responsibilities with the Business Retention &
Expansion Committee as well as the existing business call program.
“I am excited for the new challenge,” said Newman. “The 2013 Des Moines County Business Plan
Competition will launch in January, so there is no time to waste.”

light a candle on December 9. The Compassionate Friends Worldwide
Candle Lighting unites family and friends around the globe in lighting
candles for one hour to honor and remember children who have died at
any age from any cause. As candles are lit at 7 pm local time, creating a
virtual wave of light, hundreds of thousands of persons commemorate
and honor the memory of beloved children in a way that transcends all
ethnic, cultural, religious and political boundaries.

who have died, but will never be forgotten.
2013 Southeast Iowa Financial Fitness Seminar
The 2013 Southeast Iowa Financial Fitness seminar is scheduled for
Wednesday, May 1 at the PZAZZ! Event and Convention Center. A full
and exciting day is planned with guest speaker Johni Hays. Johni is a
national presence in the field of retirement and estate planning and has
authored several books on the subject.
Three sessions are planned for the day. The morning session targets
professional advisors with CEU’s available. The “Planned Giving &
Ethics Seminar” is followed by an informative luncheon and book
signing. The afternoon session, “Seven Secrets to Enhancing and
Protecting Your Wealth,” is open to the public and professionals. The
day will wrap up with our popular advisor panel Q & A and a social hour.

Visit Santa at Westland Mall
Thielen Funeral Home’s annual Holiday Remembrance Service
will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 2 pm at Thielen Funeral
Home. The Holiday Remembrance Service is a special service
provided for all the families served throughout the year. All
family members are welcome. Each family will receive one free
Guardian Angel glass ornament personalized with the name
and dates of their loved one. This ornament can be hung on a
Christmas tree or displayed in commemoration of your loved
one for years to come. Refreshments will be served following the
service in the Thielen Community Room.
The holidays can be a particularly difficult time after the loss of
a loved one, and Thielen Funeral Home hopes that by offering
a forum for commemorating loved ones during the holidays,
it might help families continue to heal from their loss and find
peace.

Each Christmas season the Burlington Kiwanis offers pictures of
children with Santa Claus. The holiday season is upon us, and
Santa Claus arrived at Fun City and is greeting children until
Christmas Eve.

The 2013 calendar features 13 photos by Ed Minard Photography. It
