Chamber Reaches Milestone
Since 1920, the Chamber of Commerce has been supported by area businesses that believe in the mission, and
value the benefits of their membership. Historically, membership has been stable, even through the economic
down time, but most recently the Chamber of Commerce has reached a milestone. In late September, it was
announced that more than 700 members have committed to the future of Greater Burlington.

range; that in itself was a great accomplishment for an area our size. To reach more than 700 members is a

Greater Burlington Secures Two 2014 Conferences
The Greater Burlington community will host two additional
conferences in 2014. The Optimist District Conference will be July
31 – August 3, 2014. This conference will attract 100 – 125 attendees to
the community. The last time Burlington hosted the conference was in
1999. Dennis McGregor and the local Optimist Club served as the local
“Connectors” to help attract this event to the community.
The second conference that Burlington community will host in 2014 is
the Red Hat Society Convention. This event will attract approximately
150 people to the community for three days in late September 2014.
Tours and special activities are being arranged for this group during
their stay in the community. Mary Fox of Red Hot Flashes Of
Burlington a local Red Hat chapter, served as the local “Connector” to
help attract this convention to the community.

Just a
Thought
Elections Matter
The Greater Burlington Partnership is a non-partisan
organization. Non-partisan does not mean disengaged.
On the contrary, our Chamber of Commerce division has
an aggressive government affairs/advocacy effort. On
an annual basis, a policy agenda is drafted and approved,
advocacy trips to Des Moines and Washington D.C.
are planned, and behind-the-scenes efforts to influence
specific legislation takes place. At the local level, the
efforts are even more intense.
The Government Affairs committee, currently chaired
by Matt Shinn, is in the final stages of drafting its ‘2013
Agenda for Economic Prosperity,’ which will outline
the policy priorities for the organization into the next
year. Although it is fairly comprehensive, its planks cross
political boundaries. Our interests are aligned first and
foremost with the needs of the business community.
Additionally, the policy statements are balanced with the
unique needs of the Greater Burlington area. Although
many of our efforts lead with a positive tone, we have
been at odds with both Republicans and Democrats at
times.
For instance, our position regarding increased
transportation infrastructure revenue places us directly at
odds with the Iowa House Republican Caucus. Several
years ago, our vigorous defense of Iowa’s Right to Work
status made us unpopular with many Democrats in both
chambers.
Regardless of the differences of opinion, the Partnership’s
job is to provide leadership on issues, recommend specific
policy changes and provide input on the consequences
of various administrative rules. Although sometimes
overlooked, many of the Partnership’s policy positions
have strong support from both parties. The goal is to
work with all elected officials to make significant change
when appropriate and incremental change is possible.
Our leadership tends to be one of consensus rather than
division.
When I look at politics at the national level, I am
thoroughly disappointed. Substantive debate has
been replaced by sound bites, and leadership has been
abandoned for hits below the belt.
In a recent survey, 66% of our membership believes that
the federal government is more partisan than five years
ago.
As a Chamber of Commerce executive, I have found the
class warfare particularly disturbing. Success has been
vilified. Employees have been encouraged to adopt an ‘us
versus them’ mentality toward employers. Although both
parties are attempting to lay claim to small businesses,
the rules, regulations, and red tape being implemented
each day by bureaucrats in Washington are complicating
growth.
Shouldn’t we be proud of success instead of demonizing
it? Yes, luxury has replaced charity for some in the top
tax bracket. We also know that corporations have made
serious mistakes, and some public outcry is warranted.
Let’s have a discussion about these things, however,
without name calling, vicious attacks or ideological purity.
Although class warfare can win close elections, it will
never be in the long-term interests of the country to
demonize hard work and punish success.
Elections have consequences.
I urge you to spend some time over the next few days to
study the issues and the candidates. Then vote for the
candidate of your choice on the 6th. Regardless of the
outcome, we will each need to set aside our differences to
solve some critical issues. The future of our state and our
nation depends on it.

Member Meeting
The Greater Burlington Partnership is preparing for Great
River Region Days at the State Capitol and in Washington, D.C.
Chamber of Commerce members are encouraged to attend.
All Chamber of Commerce members and their employees are invited
to attend. Member Meetings are an open forum for all stakeholders to
learn about what is new at the Greater Burlington Partnership and in the
Greater Burlington Area. The forum offers an opportunity for members
to ask questions of staff and volunteers.

leadership, mark your calendars for January 29 - 30, 2013 for the
lobbying trip to Des Moines and April 15-16, 2013 for the D.C.
Summit.

Get out and vote in the November 6, 2012 General Election.
Your vote in the election is very important to you and your
business! For information on your polling location, sample
ballots, or to request an absentee ballot by mail, visit the Des
Moines County website at www.co.des-moines.ia.us. The last
day to request an absentee ballot by mail is November 2. You
may also vote by absentee ballot at the Des Moines County
Court House November 3 -5. Polls will be open on November 6
from 7 am to 9 pm.
The Government Affairs Committee hosted the Des Moines
County Supervisor candidates on October 24. The forum will be
rebroadcast Friday, November 2 at 2 pm on Channel 81 and can
be viewed on the City of West Burlington’s website,
www.westburlington.org.
The State Legislator Forum was held on October 30 and will be
rebroadcast Monday, November 5 at 2 pm on channel 18. Thank

Allgood Animal Hospital
In March of 1957, senior veterinary student D. W. Allgood made a trip to Burlington to
investigate the possibility of purchasing the veterinary practice of the late Dr. R. V. Beard.
The negotiations were successful and Allgood Animal Hospital was born. After a few
relocations, the practice moved to its current location at 3106 Johannsen Drive in 1972.
Dr. Allgood hired his first associate, Dr. Rita Lesczynski, in June of 1975. The two worked
together for 35 years caring for thousands of pets. Dr. Lesczynski purchased the practice
in 2003 and Dr. Allgood officially retired in 2010.
A building addition finished this spring houses the new cat boarding area complete with
play room. It also allows space for an Intensive Care Unit/Isolation Room and additional
storage. A new blood analyzer was purchased this year, increasing speed and efficiency
for all blood testing.

The current staff includes three doctors and 17 support staff, many of whom have been
employees for 15 years or more. Allgood Animal Hospital prides itself on providing
high-quality veterinary care in a caring, family atmosphere and looks forward to
continuing to serve the Burlington area. The doctors and staff wish to thank all those who

Manufacturers Recognized at Luncheon
Manufacturers Recognized at Luncheon
Friday, October 5, the Business Retention and Expansion
committee of the Greater Burlington Partnership hosted its annual
Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon. It was a fitting day to show
our appreciation of manufacturing, as Friday was also National
Manufacturing Day, a day meant to raise awareness of the importance
of manufacturing to the economy. Approximately 20% of Des
Moines County jobs are tied to manufacturers. Industrial properties
in Des Moines County have a taxable valuation of $89,180,060,
which produces $3,488,260 in property taxes for our K-12 schools,
the community college, and our local government entities.
Mike Fazio, keynote speaker, delivered a thought provoking
presentation on “Average, the New Norm.”
With a belief that average isn’t good enough, Mike outlined
successful strategies, enthusiastically motivating attendees to reach
for your goals and give more.
Darven Kendell of the Des Moines County Regional Solid Waste
Commission presented the annual recycling awards to Snyder’s Lance Inc., Great River Health Systems, and American Ordnance.

The Greater Burlington Partnership celebrates the year’s
success at the Annual Dinner on Friday, February 8, 2013
at the Comfort Suites Conference Center. Awards are
presented in several categories for businesses and the top
honor, the Emmy Award.
The Emmy Award is to be presented only to a person
who has by some deed, action, or continued years of
community service helped the community and who is not
normally recognized for his or her actions.

Kiwanis Santa Arrives at Fun City
Each Christmas season the Burlington Kiwanis offers pictures of
children with Santa. The holiday season is upon us, and Santa Claus will
be at Fun City beginning Wednesday, November 21.
A single sheet is $8 and reduced pricing is available for packages. In
addition, Fun City generously provides a $5 coupon toward the purchase
of a $10 fun card for each youth in the picture. Our value and quality

Young Professionals Membership Drive
Recently, the volunteer leadership of the Greater Burlington Young
Professionals worked together and put plans in place for a membership
drive. These young leaders want to encourage young professionals to
become active members of the Greater Burlington community, making
Greater Burlington a better place to live, work and call home.
Monthly, YP offers volunteer opportunities, networking and personal
and professional development events. Upcoming events include a
Lunch and Learn on December 7 to learn about the history of an area
business and a social event.
