The Crepe Myrtle Tree
In a few weeks these trees will be bursting with blooms. Flowers
are borne in summer and autumn in panicles of crinkled flowers
with a crepe-like texture. Colors vary from deep purple to red to
white, with almost every shade in between. In winter these trees
are dormant, and appear dead. So our winter residents miss out
on the blooming season of the Crepe Myrtle. These come as
shrubs and trees and can be found in several areas on the Bird
Bay property.
June 16
The Florida Sandhill Crane has a red forehead, white cheeks
and a long dark pointed bill. Its long dark legs trail behind in
flight, and the long neck is kept straight in flight. Immature
birds have reddish brown upperparts and gray underparts. The
sexes look alike. The average height of these birds is around 2
– 4 ft. This crane frequently gives a loud trumpeting call and
they can be heard from a long distance. The Sandhill Crane’s
large wingspan, typically 5 - 6 ft, makes this a very skilled soaring bird similar in style to hawks and eagles. Utilizing thermals
to obtain lift, they can stay aloft for many hours, requiring only
occasional flapping of their wings and consequently expending
little energy. Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter. In their
wintering areas they form flocks of over 10,000 birds. They can
often be seen on the Bird Bay golf course digging for plant roots.
About the Photographer
Paul and Sandy Newhart moved to Bird Bay Village in 2004
from Delaware. Sandy is a fitness enthusiast while Paul enjoys
the outdoors, usually with his camera. They live on Bird Bay Drive
West. Paul became interested in birding and photography after
moving to Bird Bay. In addition, he volunteers for the Audubon
Society at the rookery in South Venice.

Gallery Page on our Website
We’ve added two new photo presentations to our Photo Gallery page on our website. One is titled “Friends of Bird Bay.” It
highlights the living creatures that live among us in the Village.
The other is titled “Plants of Bird Bay.” It has a beautiful selection
of plants, trees and flowers all found on our grounds. These
photo’s were all taken by a BBV resident, Paul Newhart. He has
graciously donated his work for us to enjoy in these photo galleries. Enjoy!!

“Concentrating on Extending the Quality of Life”
Cook’s
Corner
Julia Childs says summer is just about here, and it is time for
pot lucks and picnics. This month we are featuring a recipe that
is sure to make your mouth water and keep them coming back
for more.
Potato Salad
Dressing:
Seasonings:
¾ Cup mayonnaise
Celery Salt
1 ½ Tsp sugar (to taste)
Pepper
1 Tbsp Mustard
Seasoning Salt (sprinkle on top of
finished salad for garnish)
4 Large Potatoes
4-5 hard boiled eggs
(slice one and set aside to garnish on top of salad)
1 small onion, chopped
Celery, chopped (optional)
Peel and dice potatoes in large pieces. Bring water and diced
potatoes to a boil. Boil until you can poke with a fork, approximately 8-10 minutes. Don’t over cook to mushy. Drain. In a bowl
add potatoes, onion and 4 chopped boiled eggs. Add seasonings.
In a small bowl, mix dressing ingredients together. Add a small
amount of milk (1tsp) for a thinner dressing. Pour dressing over
the eggs and potatoes and carefully stir until coated. Great served
just made and still warm. Or refrigerate and serve cold.
My mom, to this day still makes this recipe, and I think it is
scrumptious!!

Recycle, Reuse, Renew
The City of Venice has recently added compressed cardboard
to the list of paper recyclables. It is what cereal, cracker, cake
mixes boxes, soda/beer cartons are made of. The list is long. Boxes
made of corrugated or compressed cardboard should be broken
down, flattened, and placed inside the dumpster enclosures. If
you have a large collection of compressed cardboard to recycle,
place the boxes in a brown paper bag and place with the corrugated cardboard inside your dumpster enclosure. For those of
you in BBV with curb pick-up, stack with your corrugated or put
in a brown paper bag and place on top of your paper in your
red recycle bin. Remember any paper items, including boxes
that have food on them are NOT recyclable. All food stained
cardboard should be placed in the dumpster/garbage. Let’s
do our part to BE GREEN.
Our current paper pamphlet HOW-TO Guide has not been
amended to reflect the current City of Venice recycle guidelines on
cardboard. However, www.birdbayofvenice.com has the updated
How-To Guide version on the Document’s Page.
Please add the following to the HOW- TO Guide pamphlet
you are using at your condo:
Clip and staple to your HOW-TO Guide.
RECYCLABLE PAPER –
“Now accepting Compressed Cardboard”
Acceptable Materials:
¸Compressed Cardboard: cereal, cracker, soda/pop/beer
cartons etc. – flatten and place with the corrugated cardboard.
Hurricane Season
begins June 1
Please secure all loose items outside of

Disc Golf New at the
Bird Bay Golf Course
Disc Golf has been introduced to
the Bird Bay Golf course. It is a game
very similar to regular golf except that
the players use frisbee style discs instead of
golf balls. They follow the same basic rules and
etiquette as regular golf and scoring is the same.
There are 600 members in their league in Sarasota county. The
game is compatible with regular golf. For more information on
disc golf call the pro shop and talk with Robby or look it up on
the internet.
Because the discs are a special make for the game, if you find
one in your yard, please return it to the pro shop.
The Bird Bay Golf course is open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.
The same hours as the pro shop. Players on the course after that
time, should either be members of the course or have a paid
signed receipt to show the ranger when checked.

Phase I, II, IV, V Manager’s Message
Summer has arrived, and what beautiful weather we are having.
Our summer projects for Phase I, II, IV and V have begun. Before
roofing, painting, or carport work begins a notice will be posted
on the bulletin boards and on the web. Please watch for these.
During these projects please note that vehicles will need to be
moved.
Power washing of Phase V buildings is complete. The Maintenance Crew will now move on to Phase I in preparation for the
painting of several buildings on the Circle.
As residents will notice Building 36 & 40 in Phase II are being
tented for dry wood termites this is approximately a three day
process. Roofing for Building 29 is moving along as expected,
with other buildings to follow.
ALL BIRD BAY RESIDENTS PLEASE NOTE…
Remember we are in hurricane season please check your supplies, in case of a tropical storm or hurricane. The Community
Managers office has a sign-up sheet for BB residents that need
to stay in the Clubhouse during a storm. Please contact them by
phone, email or stop by in person.

Phase I
We are in the process of collecting ballots for our upcoming
pool renovations project. If you have not voted, then log on to
the website and go to the Documents Page to view the voting
packet, print off your ballot and return to the management office either by US Mail or e-mail. Or you can obtain a paper ballot
and voting packet from the management office. If you have any
questions please contact Denise Jacques.
Phase II
Our pool will close on July 8th for renovations and will remain
closed for two weeks. During this time please use the Community
Pool.
Fumigation of buildings 36 & 40 in Phase II is (tenting for dry
wood termites) scheduled for June 5th. This is a three day process
+ one day (weather issues).
We advise all Residents of Bird Bay Village to keep pets indoors
prior to this date, as we do not want any animals getting trapped
under the tent.
Phase VI
During the summer months, TruScapes Irrigation crew will be
modifying our sprinklers around our houses, garages and carports
to allow for maximum use of our irrigation water and protecting
our wood siding. This will be done by changing or lowering some
sprinkler heads and redirecting the spray of others.
We have finished with the scheduled siding replacement for
2013. The building committee will be working on the next group
to be worked on in 2014.
The Manager’s Workshop will continue through the summer
months on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 in
the Conference Room at the Clubhouse.
There are no scheduled board meetings until October. If it is
necessary to hold a meeting, it will be posted at our mail box
sites.

Drywood Termites: Let’s Watch for the Holes in our Homes
All areas have particular insects that are generic to their climate
and location. Many feed on wood and either damage trees or items
that are called dead wood. Drywood termites feed on dead wood
and so they affect our homes. Drywood termites form colonies
similar to other termites, however, they have smaller colonies
than their subterranean cousins and have a slower rate of feeding.
Drywood termites have a flying form known as swarms and they
typically swarm in the spring and fall and when their colonies are
being treated. They fly out and form new colonies and commonly
homeowners will find bodies and wings near doors, windows
or other sources of light in their home. Drywood termites live
within their food and to remove waste from their galleries, they
make small holes in the wood to punch out their fecal pellets.
These pellets accumulate under the holes. They look like coffee
grounds and are off white to dark brown color. It is best to leave
these piles alone until the pest control company can check them.
Early detection is important as these termites infest solid dead
wood, such as wall studs, baseboards, rafters and furniture. These
termite colonies can be treated with a localized spot treatment
completed by the pest control company. If you spot any of these
signs contact your association management office.
The Fairway’s
Where have all the people gone? What a sudden exodus it was,
with all of our northern friends seeming to disappear overnight.
Fortunately for those of us who remain year round, we still have
our hardy core who have found a way to endure the heat and
humidity and, to be honest, quite enjoy the peace and quiet.
We are very fortunate to be located opposite the Phase II Garden, as it provides us with a delightful place to visit as we take our
morning and evening walks. We can enjoy the “bridge to nowhere”
and all the lovely plants and herbs, and spend some quiet time
on the benches, which some thoughtful person provided. Thank
you so much, all who created and volunteer in this garden.
Betty Murray had both her daughters visiting and they have
returned to their homes - one from Tennessee and the other
from Australia. Lois Cook is home from rehab and doing well. Katherine Ostrovsky is out walking now and will soon leave for
Massachusetts.
We are very glad that Sandy Frost, a former resident of The
Fairways, has now returned to us full time. Welcome back, Sandy,
and we hope you are here to stay this time!
New to The Fairways are Mike and Linda Monaco from Grand
Island, New York. We welcome them.
We will have our ladies luncheons and cocktail parties all
summer. Many thanks to Judy and Bill for our storage shed now in
#800 enclosure. We are so lucky to have them!! Do keep in touch
during the summer!!

Bird Bay Village--Goes GREEN for Girl Scouts
No, not GREEN as in living-GREEN, or eco-friendly
GREEN or even GREEN energy, but GREEN as in Girl
Scouts! Girl Scout Troop 244 lead by Dina Bennett, a
resident of Phase II Bird Bay, volunteered to install a
new butterfly garden in Phase’s 2 Refuge Garden.
Several weeks ago, the Troop came together
in the Garden to learn about types of plants that
butterflies require - larval plants, nectar plants, as
well as the need for fresh water. At a later meeting
in the Garden the young women – Kelsey, Shayna,
Mariah, Kira, and Mikayla - designed a heart shaped
bed and with the help of volunteer Tim Smith dug
the grass out, and prepared the bed to receive the
new plants. On May 4 the Troop met yet again and
installed their chosen plants which included Blue
Butterfly plant, Blue Curls, Horsemint, Native Aster,
Purple Saliva, Dwarf Azalea, White Milk Weed, and
Lantana. For their water source, a placeholder
of a saucer was used until they finish a Troop
logo inspired butterfly tray.
If you are still here in Bird Bay, stop by the
Refuge Garden to look at their handiwork,
if not be sure to put it on your must see list
when you return. Bird Bay Village and the Refuge Garden wish to thank Troop 244 for their
hard work. P.S. The butterflies thank you too!
