FROM THE SECRETARY
Welcome to the 3rd Newsletter of the Club. What a wonderful year so far its been for the Langshan Breed with an Australian
Bantam Black Pullet taking out the Best Softfeather In Show at the National Poultry Show in Canberra. Congratulations to
Phillip & Linda Tisdell .
Welcome also to new members Irene Askew, Noeleen Battley, Rod Butt, Robert Hunt, Colin Kincaid, David Plant, John
Suters, Macdonald Family, and Mark Lee. We hope your time with the Club is an enjoyable one.
This newsletter is an extra edition because we felt to wait until November to let you all know the results of our Annual
Show, was too far away. An end of year newsletter in November will still be sent to you all.
The Annual General Meeting was held after the judging was completed at the Annual Show. Office Bearers were elected
and nominations were taken for the 2013 Annual Show.

A Committee Meeting is being held at 7.30pm on Friday 24 August at the Warragul Poultry Pavilion. This meeting will
be open to all members who wish to attend. If you have any items you would like to put to the Committee or discuss at the
meeting please come along and discuss your ideas as the Committee welcomes input from all members.

I particularly would like to thank all the people who helped me in preparing for and run our second Annual Show. To
have such a wonderful team to support me as Secretary of our Club makes the tasks in hand so much easier. The show went
without a hitch, so to speak. Our Chief Steward (and Club Treasurer) Brett Batcheldor, Steward Mark Lee, and Show Manager
Hayden Stephens took all measures to ensure the show went as smoothly as possible, and I would like to take this opportunity
to thank them for their colossal effort and encouraging attitude. However the show was marred in some respects as some
exhibitors who either refused or forgot to clean out their pens. I would like to take this opportunity to remind those exhibitors
that cleaning out their own pens was a show rule listed in the schedule, as it will be again next year.
The day was enjoyed by everyone, in particular our Judge Mr.Warren Schelbach who made positive comments about the
quality and the amount of birds we have down here in the cold south east. He was also very appreciative of our hospitality and
caring nature. We would all like to thank Mr. Schelbach for allowing us to occupy his time and borrow his expert eye.
What a phenomenal success our show was. Without exhibitors there is no show so thankyou all Exhibitors for your
support. We received 237 entries totalling 255 birds, owned by 27 individual exhibitors travelling from as far as Taree, East
Maitland and Goulburn in New South Wales and from all over Victoria . The largest class numbers were in the Australian
Bantams – 46 black Pullets, 30 black cockerels and 10 black hens. In the Australian Standard Langshan classes it was very
pleasing to see a line-up of 17 very nice black Pullets and 11 black Cockerels, being the two largest classes in that section. The
numbers were disappointing in the Standard Blue classes with only 2 birds entered. In the Australian Bantams in Blue and White
classes the numbers were quite good, the largest being 13 Blue Pullets and 10 Blue Hens. As most of you will be aware, we have
rarely seen Croad Langshans exhibited over the past years so the Club was very pleased to receive entries of 19 Standard Croad
Langshans both in the Blue and Black classes and 4 Bantam Croads.

Pullet
The Croad Langshan breed originated from the
Langshan region, in the north of China near the Mongolian
border. Major F T Croad imported the first Langshans from
China into Britain in 1872. The Croad is well known for the
“U” Shape as seen in profile where the tail feathers are at
the same level as the head. The Croad Langshans are
thought to be the most “true” to the original type.
In a very interesting article on Croads, written by Lyn
Heigl from UK, she states
“Other Langshans also exist – such as German, Modern,
Australian and American – but tend to be taller and
leggier than the Croad. In Australia I am told that
Langshans were 50% of the nations breeding flock before
1894, but as fertility dropped over the years, Orpington
blood was introduced and the Australian Langshan today
looks more like the Modern Langshan than the Croad”.
There are Croad Langshans in UK, Belgium, Canary
Islands, America, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain,
Sweden, Wales, France and Scotland.
Are there still Langshans in China? There is certainly
is!! In Yangkou Town, Rudong Country, Nantong City,
Jiangsu Province in China there is the Langshan Chicken
Farm which was established in 1959 to help the
endangered Langshan Chicken. The farm is for preserving,
upgrading and breeding Langshan Chicken and has a floor
space of 200,000 sq. mtrs. with 20 standard hen houses
and running 50,000 Langshan Chickens. The farm also has
an isolation building and a warehouse.
The Croad Langshan is becoming more popular once
again here in Australia at the Poultry Shows as was evident
at the National Poultry Show in Canberra this year with 27
Standard Croads entered and at our own Langshan show
here in Victoria, 19 Standard and 4 Bantam Croads were
exhibited. Also at their Annual Show in July this year the

This must all be very encouraging for the Croad breeders
and exhibitors .
The Croads are known for their gentle and docile
temperament. They have dense glossy black feathers and
lay around 150 eggs a year which are a plum colour and
they can live for around 10 years. Like the Australian
Langshans they have feathers down the outside of the leg
and to the end of the outer toe, the soles of the feet are
pink and the toe nails white. They are big birds and are not
fully matured until around 2 years of age. They come in
Black, Blue and White colours although the Whites are
rarely seen here in Australia.
I received a lovely email from Clare Curtis in the UK in reply
to my enquiries about Croads overseas. Clare has her own
website and has kindly allowed me to use some photos of

one show – The National Poultry Club Show in 2009. Her
major triumph being RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.
The Croad Langshan was imported into America in 1878
and admitted to the American Standard in 1883 but only
the colours Black and White. The colour blue was not
accepted to the American Standard until 1987.

in early November and I am currently in the process of
updating all the information from last year. The Club has
new members to add to the Directory.

it gave a number of people the contacts for breeders of
various colours or breeds they were looking for.

Oh woe is me
A call to change the standards I did see
Yet is it really change we need
Or men who better do the deed?
I specially seek an Arthur King
With bold men, prepared to do a finer thing.
Champions dedicated to guard this trust
Custodians of the standards – cause most just.
To you of modern quick fix mind
Would you make our birds a different kind?
What you cannot easily achieve
Will you change to suit your need?
Such effrontery would you dare show
To prove that more you think you know?
Never to reason the why or wherefore
Neither benefit nor logic care for.
Our formulators worked so near their task
Understood full well what they did ask
The design was capability
Then beauty added for nobility
In OEG did they not set the mould of Warrior
Full of those qualities that leave rivals sorrier
With attributes so fit and proper
Was not created fighter, sire , show stopper.
Now, a blue ribbon gives but one man’s view
But is the bird of Standard really true?
While prize cards and ribbons may bedeck your wall
Surely retaining excellence is by far the better call
How will those future enthusiasts record,
By which criteria will we be scored
While “Change” they cry – brave Keepers, dare I ask
Is staying true, indeed, too difficult a task?
ON THE LIGHTER
SIDE OF LIFE
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.
There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more
meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is ‘UP’.
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at
the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning,
why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come
UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for
election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a
report?
We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room,
polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP
the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP
the old car. At other times the little word has real special
meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work
UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one
thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We
open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be
knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word
UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP
almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty
definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a
list of the many ways UP is used.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP,
you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When
the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it
wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't
rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP. For now my
time is UP, so – it is time to shut UP!
