ILLINI Junior 1B Mike Dufek was 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and all four RBI on Sunday (April 12) vs. Illinois. In fact, he accounted for all five Wolverine runs as the fifth scored on a Dufek double-play grounder that does not count as an official RBI. Dufek gave U-M a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double and tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning with his two-run homer. Dufek, who is fourth on the team in hitting at .331 (42-for127), leads the Wolverines in both doubles (16) and home runs (10) and ranks second with 35 RBI. Dufek, who owns a six-game hitting streak, has hits in 22 of his last 23 games. CISLO ADDS THREE-HOLE TO RESUME Senior tri-captain 2B Kevin Cislo also made a move in Tuesday’s lineup as he batted in the third slot and was 1-for-4 with a double and scored the second Wolverine run vs. CMU. Cislo’s debut at third in the lineup marks the seventh different position he has hit in the lineup in his four-year career as he has now batted first, second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth in his 148 career starts. HIT STREKS SNAPPED Junior 1B/RHP Mike Dufek and sophomore SS Anthony Toth saw their career-best hitting streaks of 16 and 11 games respectively snapped over the weekend Dufek’s 16-game hitting streak stands as the longest for U-M since Zach Putnam (2006-08) had a 16-gamer in 2008. LAMARRE RETURNS TO EARLY SEASON FORM Sophomore CF Ryan LaMarre gave Michigan a 2-1 lead in Sunday’s game vs. Penn State when he hit a two-run homer in the first inning. LaMarre, who leads the team with a .370 (40-for-108) batting average, hit .583 (7-for-12) in the weekend series with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI. LaMarre, who has a team-leading total of 40 RBI in overall action, is hitting .417 (10-for-24) in Big Ten play to lead the Wolverines. LAMARRE’S BLASTS COME IN PAIRS Ryan LaMarre hit a pair of homers Saturday (April 4) vs. Penn State, his third multi-homer game of the season. His previous two-homer games came vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Feb. 27 and vs. Siena on March 7. LAMARRE/DUFEK HAVE PERSONAL HR DERBY Mike Dufek leads Ryan LaMarre by one in the U-M home run race, but the two have a knack for dropping bombs in the same game. The duo have homered in the same game six times so far this season. DUFEK CONTINUES TO HIT Junior 1B Mike Dufek was 2-for-4 with a home run in the loss to Penn State on Sunday. Dufek is second on the team with 12 multi-hit games this season and has hits in 18 of his last 19 games while ranking second on the team with 30 RBI. Dufek, who is hitting .330 (37-for-112) in overall action, had three doubles, three homers and eight RBI in the five games last week. OAKS SIGHTING ON THE MOUND Junior OF/RHP Alan Oaks worked four innings on the mound after stating the game in rightfield. Oaks, who had pitched four innings in his career prior to Sunday’s action, took the loss, allowing an unearned run in the seventh inning to snap the 5-5 tie, and he faced four batters in the eighth inning and they all scored. He allowed nine hits for the five runs, four earned, and he recorded two strikeouts. FINALLY A “CRANKED” NOTE Since his arrival on campus, Michigan fans have waited to utter the phrase “Coley Cranked It” and on Sunday (April 5) they got the chance as Freshman catcher Coley Crank launched his first career homer in the fourth inning. Crank, who has made 11 starts (eight catching, three as DH), is hitting .289 (11-for-38) with four extra base hits (three doubles, one home run). TOTH IS A TOUGH OUT Junior/sophomore SS Anthony Toth was 1-for-3 with a single to finish .353 (6-for-17) in the five games last week. Toth, who has hits in 17 of his last 18 games, is hitting .323 (31-for-96) for the season. CAPTAIN KAL POSTS FISHER FIRST Senior tri-captain Tim Kalczynski launched his first career homer at Ray Fisher Stadium in the Wilpon Baseball Complex in U-M’s game-winning, five-run rally in Saturday’s second game against Penn State. The homer is Kalczynski’s second career homer. LOOK WHAT THE KAT DRAGGED IN Junior LHP Eric Katzman collected his team-leading fifth win of the season, working 7.1 innings as the starting pitcher for the Wolverines in the second game vs. Penn State. Katzman (5-2) allowed seven hits, five runs (two earned) and recorded five strikeouts. Katzman had two wins last week alone and has a 2.68 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 40.1 innings this season. Katzman earned his 10th career win (10-5) as a Wolverine with 90 career strikeouts. FETTER MATCHES K MARK Senior RHP Chris Fetter pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) as he matched his career best with 11 strikeouts in a no-decision in Saturday’s (April 4) eventual 6-4 loss in 10 innings to Penn State. Fetter (4-1) leads the Wolverines with a 2.61 ERA and he has a teamleading total of 51 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. FETTER STILL CLIMBING THE K LADDER Fetter pushed his career strikeout total to 229 on Saturday (April 4) vs. Penn State as he pulled into a tie for fifth place on U-M’s career list with LHP Rich Hill (229 Ks, 2000-02). Next up on the U-M list is Jim Brauer (237 Ks, 2001-05) in fourth place DUFEK DOUBLES UP THREE TIMES Junior 1B/RHP Mike Dufek was 3-for-5 for his 11th multi-hit game of the season Wednesday (April 1) vs. Oakland and his three doubles tied Michigan’s single-game record. Many Wolverines have had three doubles in a game with the last one coming from Mike Schmidt at Ohio University (March 20, 2005). In an ‘April Fools’ special note, the last time a Wolverine had three doubles in a game at Fisher Stadium was Scott Weaver vs. Illinois on April 1, 1995. CISLO SETTING THE TABLE Senior tri-captain 2B Kevin Cislo went 3-for-3 with his 10th double, a walk and three runs scored in Saturday’s (April 4) opener vs. Penn State and he added a single and a walk in the second game as he scored the tying run at 5-5 in the seventh inning of the 9-5 win. Cislo, who leads the team with 35 runs scored and 20 walks, is hitting .351 (34-for-97). Cislo is hitting .444 (8-for-18) in Big Ten action. u n i v e r s i t y o f M i c h i g a n B ASE B A L L 2008 ......................2009 46-14 .......................... 19-13 22-4 ............................... 6-7 16-7 ............................... 5-5 8-3 ............................... 8-1 0-3 ............................... 0-0 26-5................................ 4-5 12-2 ............................... 2-4 14-3................................ 2-1 Extra innings 2-1................................ 1-1 Day games 35-10........................... 16-10 Night games 11-4................................ 3-3 vs. lefty starter 12-6................................ 3-6 vs. righty starter 34-8..............................16-7 1-run games 5-5................................ 5-1 2-run games 5-2................................ 4-5 5+ run games 23-5................................ 7-7 Shutouts 2-1................................ 0-2 Scoring 0-2 runs 1-4................................ 0-6 Scoring 3-5 runs 12-8................................ 6-4 Scoring 6-9 runs 15-2................................ 6-2 Scoring 10+ runs 18-0................................ 7-1 Score in 1st Inning 24-5................................ 5-6 Opp. scored in 1st inning 19-8................................ 5-3 U-M scores first 27-6..............................11-6 Opp. scores first 19-8................................ 8-7 U-M leads after 6th inn. 39-2..............................14-0 U-M trails after 6th inn. 1-9..............................2-11 Tied after 6th inn. 6-3................................ 3-2 U-M leads after 7th inn. 30-0..............................14-0 U-M trails after 7th inn. 1-9..............................2-12 Tied after 7th inn. 2-2................................ 3-1 U-M leads after 8th inn. 31-0..............................16-0 U-M trails after 8th inn. 1-10..............................0-12 Tied after 8th inn. 1-1................................ 2-1 Hit 0 home runs Hit 1 home run Hit 2+ home runs 31-7................................ 7-7 11-3................................ 5-3 13-2................................ 7-3 Made 0 errors Made 1 error Made 2+ errors Opp. made 0 errors Opp. made 1 error Opp. made 2+ errors 17-2................................ 7-4 15-7................................ 4-2 21-4................................ 8-7 17-2................................ 8-4 15-7................................ 4-3 14-5................................ 7-6 Out-hit opponent Out-hit by opponent Hits are tied 38-3..............................14-4 7-9................................ 3-8 1-2................................ 2-1 Longest Win Streak Longest Losing Streak Current Streak 12.................................... 5 3.................................... 3 ................................ PLAYER HIT TWO HOME RUNS IN A INNING Junior Mike Dufek continues a family tradition with Michigan. Mike is the fourth Dufek to play at the varsity level for the Wolverines. His grandfather is Don Dufek, Sr. (1948-50), who was MVP of the Rose Bowl for U-M football in 1949, and his two uncles are Don Dufek, Jr. (1973-75), an All-American football player who also played hockey for the Wolverines, and Bill Dufek (197478), an offensive lineman for the Wolverines. Each of the three earned first team All-Big Ten honors in football. His uncles (Don - Seattle, Bill - New York Jets) also both played in the NFL. Mike’s father, Joe, was an All-American in both football and baseball at Yale and was a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. Brotherly Love Sophomore C Jake McLouth joins the Wolverines for his first season on the team. Jake’s older brother Nate was a 2008 MLB All-Star and Gold Glove Winner for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nate was drafted by the Pirates in the 25th round of the 2000 MLB Draft and was scheduled to be a Michigan Wolverine before signing with the Pirates on August 29, 2000. Both Nate and Jake are from Whitehall, Mich., the same hometown as teammate Nick Urban. Fetter earned his fifth (5-1) win of the season, allowing six hits and two runs in the win. It marked the fifth time in his career that Fetter has fanned 10 or more batters and his third game this season with 11 or more (vs. Siena on March and Penn State, game one, on April 4). The 13 Ks are the most for a Wolverine since Jim Brauer (2001-05) fanned 13 in seven innings against the University of Detroit (March 27, 2004). The visiting Nittany Lions (16-13, 2-3 Big Ten) took the opener 6-4 in 10 innings. U-M is 1-1 in extra innings in 2009. WOLVERINES SCORE IN BUNCHES Michigan’s nine-run fifth-inning outburst marks the third time this season that the Wolverines have scored eight runs or more in an inning. U-M posted eight runs in the sixth inning vs. Jacksonville in a 21-3 win (2/28/09) and an eightrun third inning in an 11-3 win at EMU (3/17/09). The nine runs in an inning vs. Oakland marks the most runs in an inning for the Wolverines since a nine-run fourth inning at Northwestern (March 31, 2007). DOUBLE TROUBLE Michigan collected nine doubles in Wednesday’s 14-13 win over Oakland. It marks the most doubles in a game for the Wolverines since U-M had 10 doubles in a 17-3 win at Indiana on May 10, 1982. BIG TEN OPENERS A SINCH Michigan’s 4-3 win Friday (March 27) over Iowa marked the fourth straight Big Ten opening win for Wolverine head coach Rich Maloney. U-M has earned wins over Iowa (2008 and 2009) and Northwestern (2006 and 2007). Maloney is also 4-0 in Big Ten road openers since 2006, with wins at Minnesota (2006), Northwestern (2007), Penn State (2008) and Iowa (2009). Maloney is 5-2 in his seven Big Ten openers and 4-3 in his Big Ten road openers. LATE INNINGS ARE THE KEY If you want to predict Michigan victories, pay attention to innings six through eight. U-M is perfect when leading after each of those frames this year. Conversely, Michigan has won just twice when trailing after the sixth or seventh and have yet to win when trailing after the eight. TOP-25 FINISH BECOMING HABITUAL Michigan looks to make it three years in a row with a top-25 finish after ending 2008 at No. 22 in the Baseball America poll, and No. 20 and No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, respectively. Pre-Season At-Large CB INSIDER TABS WOLVERINES CollegeBaseballInsider.com has picked Michigan as its “Team to Beat” in its look at the Big Ten Conference. The web site polled conference coaches who tabbed staff ace Chris Fetter as a “pitcher you don’t want to face” and “top three starting pitcher” for the 2009 campaign. Baseball America released its NCAA Tournament prediction of the field of 64 prior to the start of the 2009 season. If the prediction holds true, Michigan will fall behind Indiana for the Big Ten’s automaticqualifying spot and are predicted as an at-large bid to make the tournament as a regional four seed. LARKIN, RICKEY HEADED TO HALL OF FAME The College Baseball Foundation announced Tuesday (March 24) the names of the 10 players and coaches comprising the 2009 National College Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Class, which includes a pair of former Wolverines in shortstop Barry Larkin (198385) and coach Branch Rickey (1910-13). Larkin and Rickey become the second and third former Wolverines to earn induction, joining pitcher Jim Abbott (1986-88), who was part of the second-ever class enshrined. Abbott’s Number to be Retired Former U-M All-American Jim Abbott will have his jersey No. 31 retired by the Wolverines on April 18 during a pre-game ceremony prior to the start of the Michigan State game. Abbott, who pitched for Michigan from 1986-88, led the Wolverines to Big Ten titles his freshman and junior seasons. Abbott’s uniform will be just the fifth retired in school baseball history. He will join Don Lund (1943-45), Moby Benedict (1954-56), Bill Freehan (1961) - who all played and coached at Michigan - and Ray Fisher, who coached the Wolverines from 1921-58. TOP-10 ABBOTT MOMENTS FEATURE As part of the countdown toward the Jim Abbott number retirement ceremony vs. MSU on April 18, MGoBlue.com will run the top-10 moments in Jim Abbott’s U-M history as a daily feature. Resident U-M baseball historian Jim Schneider ranks the top-10 moments with commentary from Abbott himself. Each day a new moment will be unveiled leading up to the No. 1 moment on the morning on April 18.
