Friends, Michigan’s residents are living longer and healthier lives. In fact, the fastest growing population segment in Michigan are ages 85 and older. It is important we continue on this path and encourage longer, healthier lives for all Michiganders. STATE REPRESENTATIVE MIKE McCREADY P.O. This year, we plan to expand on this effort by setting aside an additional $11.8 million to establish and expand health wellness programs across the state. Michigan Alzheimer’s Care and Support Program I supported the creation of this program as a subset of the Elder Heart program to help provide assistance to families and seniors who are dealing with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Recently, in the Michigan House of Representatives, we included $150,000 in the Fiscal Year 2015 budget to support a three-county Alzheimer’s disease in-home care and support pilot program. Lifelong Learning It is important we keep challenging our minds throughout our lives. You might look for the numerous colleges and universities across the state that offer senior-specific programs at free or low cost. In addition, there are many educational opportunities online, so you may continue to learn while in the comfort of your home. Experiencing Michigan In 2013, more than 200,000 older adults purchased at least one hunting or fishing license and about 75 percent reported that they engaged in at least one outdoor recreation activity over the course of the year. This activity is both refreshing and encouraging to our state, and I hope we can continue it for years to come. I also hope you experience the many ways to enjoy Michigan’s outdoors.
