Great Michigan Read:
Annie’s Ghosts by Steve Luxenberg
Join nearly 300 other organizations
in this state-wide reading initiative.
The 2014 selection is part memoir
and part detective story illuminating
the author’s discovery that his mother
had a sister hidden away in Eloise, a
psychiatric institution in Westland.
Copies of the book and reading guides will be available at
the library. The Great Michigan Read is presented by the
Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer
and the National Endowment for the Humanities

Dig deeper into the themes of the book: family secrets, immigration, mental illness, and more.

We’ll help you shake off your paralysis and get those
boxes of photos, diaries, and memorabilia out of the

Re-creating Eloise
Michigan Notable Book Award
winning author D. E. Johnson
will discuss Eloise Hospital as it
was in the early 1900’s as well
as the changes in the institution
through the Great Depression.
