Minimum Qualifications:
≥ 2 years study toward B.S. in entomology, zoology,
wildlife biology, or closely related field.
Description of Position and Duties:
The field technician will be responsible for conducting field work in support of two studies
investigating distribution and population sizes of two federally listed butterflies. Habitats
vary from dry upland savannas and prairies to wet, mucky wetlands. The technician will
work closely with the principal investigators to plan field activities, conduct surveys, and
ensure accurate data collection. Duties will include evaluating potential survey sites,
conducting butterfly transect and meander surveys, sampling vegetation and compiling and
entering data into spreadsheets. Field sampling will regularly require long hours under
adverse working conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in knee
boots in uneven muddy terrain, and biting insects). Work over some holidays and/or
weekends, travel to study sites throughout southern Michigan, and use of personal vehicle
will be required (mileage reimbursed at standard rate). Desired qualifications include the
following: familiarity with Michigan and/or Midwestern butterfly species; experience
conducting butterfly surveys; ability to identify common Michigan plant species; ability to
use and enter data on notebook computers; and capability to navigate via print map,
compass, and GPS or smart device. Applicants must have valid driver’s license and reliable
field vehicle. A willingness to learn and a good sense of humor are essential, and applicants
should be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
