What is Mi-STAR?
Mi-STAR, the Michigan Science Teaching and Assessment Reform project, is developing a new
Michigan-based, fully integrated, middle school science curriculum. The curriculum will emphasize
connections between science, technology, engineering and mathematics and will engage students
in the practices of science and engineering.
Mi-STAR is a partnership of public higher education and K-12 schools in Michigan funded by the
Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.
What are the benefits?
Mi-STAR is looking for advanced graduate students from the STEM fields or from education
research programs who are interested in developing the new, Michigan-based, middle school
integrated science curriculum.
There are two levels of graduate student participation:
•
Curriculum Development Scholars work with teachers over the summer to create curricular
materials (2 week minimum commitment at $160/day)
•
Curriculum Review Scholars review the curriculum units that are developed providing
feedback on technical accuracy and pedagogy as well as recommendations for
improvement (8-16 hour commitment at $20/hour)
