WELCOME
Ah January… time to take stock and plan for the
year ahead, after the excesses of the festive season.
With New Year‘s resolutions still being made (and
broken!) now’s the time to try something different,
and Phoenix is the perfect place to do it.
We’ve got loads of fantastic short courses, which are
a great way to get more out of film, learn new skills
and meet people. With 90 minute ’tasters’ through
to 8-week intensive courses, there’s plenty to choose
from (p5).

Our new exhibition is The Canvas of Resonance (p4),
a dramatic sound and visual installation inspired
by the Foley artists who created sound effects in
the early days of cinema, TV and radio. The Cube
Gallery will resonate with the sound of thunder
from 19 Jan.
We’ve now entered the ‘awards corridor’, leading
up to the BAFTAs and Oscars at the end of February.
The rumour-mill’s hotly tipped Eddie Redmayne
for The Danish Girl (p6); The Revenant’s Leonardo
DiCaprio is a strong contender (p10); and Jennifer
Lawrence is outstanding in Joy (p7). We’re also
bringing back Suffragette, The Lady in the Van,
Brooklyn and Carol – all huge successes in late
2015, so if you missed them the first time round
now’s your chance.
After the frantic activity of Christmas, have a relaxing
weekend and bring your little (and not so little)
ones down to Phoenix for a family film (p15). We’ve
got great kids’ movies every weekend, including
our regular Reel India screening if you fancy trying
something new.

THE CANVAS OF
RESONANCE
Tue 19 Jan – Sat 20 Feb
Cube Gallery, Free

The Canvas of Resonance is a
sound and visual installation
by Kenny Wong Chi-Chuen,
inspired by the Foley artists
who produced sound effects for
cinema, TV and radio in the predigital age.
In the early days of live radio,
Foley artists invented a novel
way to create the sound of
thunder: their method of rattling
a large piece of thin copper
sheeting suspended by wires
was so effective that it became
a mainstay of the industry for
decades, and is still what many
people associate with a Foley
artist’s work.
The Canvas of Resonance
re-examines this longstanding
audio effect, creating complex,
atmospheric sound compositions
by manipulating the surface of a
series of metal sheets suspended
in the gallery space. The resulting
installation – accompanied by
flickering lights highlighting
the surface of the metal – is a
dramatic, immersive experience.

- Beautiful, humane and

triumph last year in The Theory
of Everything, Eddie Redmayne
may be in line for another Oscar
with his stunning turn in this
remarkable love story, inspired
by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and
Gerda Wegener. Originally known
as Einar, Lili Elbe (Redmayne) was
one of the first people to undergo
sex reassignment surgery in the
early 20th century. Directed by
Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech,
Les Misérables) with a cast that
includes Alicia Vikander as Lili’s wife
Gerda, Matthias Schoenaerts and
Ben Whishaw, The Danish Girl is
captivating and beautifully made.
One of our most popular films
from last year returns due to
demand. 1950s Ireland and
young Eilis is leaving for America.
Sponsored by a priest in Brooklyn,
Eilis finds a job and lodgings with
the no nonsense Mrs. Kehoe (Julie
Walters). After initial homesickness,
Eilis falls in love with her new life,
but a tragedy back home means
she must return to Ireland. Torn
between two countries, she must
decide where her heart lies.

ROOM
15
Fri 29 Jan - Thu 4 Feb
Dir: Lenny Abrahamson
Cast: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay
Ireland/Canada 2015, 1hr 58mins
Ma and Jack have lived in ‘Room’
for all of Jack’s life. Ma has created
a whole world for Jack there with
toys, school and gym class. But Ma
wants them to escape; she wants
to returns to the world that Jack
thinks only exists in their TV, and
to do that they will have to risk
everything. Lenny Abrahamson’s
stunning new film about a mother
and son held against their will is
by turns thrilling and profoundly
moving; it hits with a punch of
emotional power you’ll feel for days
afterwards. Essential viewing.

Mon 25 - Thu 28 Jan
Dir: Paul Weitz
Cast: Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner
USA 2015, 1hr 19mins
When Elle’s granddaughter Sage
turns up looking for money due to
an unwanted pregnancy, the two
drive around town trying to borrow
some cash. Lily Tomlin is wonderful
as the acerbic feminist poet Elle
who has enough life experience
to handle just about anyone; you
almost pity Sage’s weed-smoking
boyfriend who finds this out the
hard way! A warm, touching and
funny film, it’s refreshing to see an
older, fiercely independent woman
in a lead role.
SPOTLIGHT
15
Fri 29 Jan - Thu 11 Feb
Dir: Thomas McCarthy
Cast: Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo
USA 2015, 2hrs 9mins
This intelligent and gripping new
film follows the Boston Globe’s
‘Spotlight’ investigative journalists
as they unearthed a huge scandal of
child abuse and cover-up within their
local Catholic Archdiocese in 2001.
Reminiscent of All the President’s
Men with a superb ensemble cast
that includes Michael Keaton,
Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo,
Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci,
Spotlight is the frontrunner for Best
Picture in the upcoming awards
season. It’s a terrific testament to
a team of determined men and
women who refused to give up.

A double bill of Westerns to
celebrate Iñárritu’s The Revenant
and whet the appetite for
our screenings of Tarantino’s
The Hateful Eight in Feb. We start
with John Ford’s classic starring
John Wayne as a Civil War veteran
on a journey to rescue his niece.
We follow with the Coens‘ superb
update of True Grit starring Jeff
Bridges as a Marshal hired by
a teenager to track down her
father's murderer.
Isolated in their remote Cumbrian
cottage, elderly couple Leonard
and Maria find that time has caught
up with them and their lives have
gradually slipped from eccentricity
into chaos. Taking a few days off
work, their son Daniel has travelled
back home to help them cope. With
very little time to spare, Daniel faces
the daunting challenge of restoring
some order to the house whilst
keeping everyone happy.
