Diagonal Stripes
Next round: Ch 1, (With A 1 sc in next 3 sts, with B, 1
sc in next 4 sts) rep to end of round, carrying the
unused strand along and crocheting over it when
changing colors. Rep last rnd 5 times more. Bands will
appear to move diagonally.
Note: For cleaner color changes, work the last stitch
in each section as foll:YO, insert hook into next st,YO
& draw loop through, with NEW color YO and draw
through existing old color loops.
Horizontal Stripes
Rnds 1 & 2: With B, sc all sts (2 rnds.)
Rnds 3 & 4: With A, sc all sts (2 rnds.)
Cont working in stripe patt as est until a total of 8 (8,
10, 12, 14) rows rows have been worked, or until hat
meas 5-1/2 (6, 6-3/4, 7-3/4, 8-1/2)”/14 (15.5, 17, 20,
21.5)cm from foundation
ch (or desired total
depth for your intended
wearer). Tie off last st.
lay Color B across Color A at a
right angle, forming an “X”.
Earflaps
Carrying A along as in
diagonal stripe section,
sc 14 (15, 17, 19, 22) sts,
drop A and with B only
sc25, turn. Sl 1 in each
next 25 sts, turn.
Next Row (RS): With B,
sc 11, sc3tog, sc 11, turn
work.
Next Row (WS): Sc
across all sts in ear flap.
Next Row: With A sc
10, sc3tog, sc 10, turn
work.
Next Row (WS): Sc
across all sts in ear flap.
Cont in this manner,
changing colors every RS
row and working an
SC3tog in the center of
each earflap RS row
until only 3 sts rem to
be worked.
End by working one final
sc3tog with B, carrying B along. Continue down the
left edge of the earflap sc 25, carrying B along as you
work.
With B, carrying A along, sc 20 (25, 35, 45, 53) sts
around front of hat to second earflap. Drop B and
work second earflap as first.
Bring up the ends of Color A and
secure them with a slip knot.
Repeat with the ends of Color B.
You now have a long doublestrand loop of Color A linked
with a long double-strand loop of
Color B. Pass the color A
slipknot over a doorknob, hook
or drawer pull, and slip a crochet
hook into the color B slipknot.
Pull the cord taut so that the
hook rests perpendicular to your
fingers allowing the strand of
yarn to slip between your middle
and pointer finger.
Begin turning the hook to twist
the strands of yarn. Continue
twisting until the yarn is quite
taut and evenly twisted (when
relaxed slightly the twisted yarn
should want to kink up.) Still
holding one end of the yarn in
your left hand, with your right
hand pinch the twisted strand at
the point where the colors meet.
Bring the ends of the yarn together, then release the
middle of the cord allowing it to twist around itself
forming a plied cord. Tie both ends together. Run your
finger or the crochet hook between the cords to even
out the twists if necessary.
Cont with B (carrying A) to start of round (center
back) and with B only sc around entire hat edge, flaps
included, as foll: Sc 14 (15, 17, 19, 22) sts to earflap, sc
25 up one side and sc 25 down other side of first
earflap, sc 20 (25, 35, 45, 53) sts across front, sc 25 up
one side and sc 25 down other side of second earflap,
sc 14 (15, 17, 19, 22) sts to end of round — 148 (155,
169, 183, 197) sts total.
With A and starting at center back, 1 hdc into each st
around bottom of hat, working around each ear flap.
FINISHING
Weave in ends. Following instructions, create two 2/C
twisted cords, each approx 12”/30cm long. Stitch
twisted cords to the tips of the earflaps.
2/C Twisted Cord
Using 2 contrasting colors, measure a length of each
color twice as long as desired length of final twisted
cord. Fold each strand in half. Lay Color A down, then
