Dear Ravi,
I am very happy to learn that
the Thanjavoor Marathi meet is taking place
on December 22nd.
What is the essence of Tanjavoor
Maharashtrians ?
It is above all an openminded approach
Otherwise our forefathers would not have
left their cozy homes and ventured into a
totally different 'country' with a different
language and culture and ethnic
background. In a way the TMs in the US
reflect that spirit.
Apart from self confidence our tradition has
two other aspects, high integrity and
competence. That is why TMs could retain
the trust of rulers irrespective of their
background. Hindu Muslim or Christian
[British].
Let us build on this heritage of ours.
We are great synthesizers. Look at our
contribution to the South Indian cuisine.
Sambar, polia, methcoot and rasavagi are
our items.
Look at katha kalkshepam and Bajans. We
originated them.
Look at our deep commitment to Hinduism.
Shivaji was the first to think of an Hindu
empire.
We have had a great past. We can shape a
great future. We can punch much above our
weight.
I wish your efforts all success!

How fast can we as a community grow? Fast enough
to make a difference?
The speed of growth of a community depends on
the attitude to people of that community to make
it into a large community. Does that mean all of us
have to go on annual donation drive? No. The
community succeeds with resources of volunteer
time, effort & money.
DMM is blessed to have excellent volunteers who
are prepared to contribute
to the welfare of our
deshastha marathi
community. This attitude
is making TMG & DMM
grow very fast. How fast
should we go? Fast
enough to make difference & help our community!

Culture & Traditions - Wonders of NeuroDr. Suresh Maruthi

Communication Gopal Das
Culture and traditions–why we need to preserve it
People should understand that they need to listen to
what is being told instead of trying to find out who is
telling it.
At the outset invoking Lord Ganesha though the
dhyana sloka mentioned by Sri Madhvacharya in
his classic work Tantra Sara Sangraha let me
outline the contours of the topic which is of
current relevance to our people across the world.
The topic assumes importance in the wake of an
increasing sense of loss of identity among us and
the pressure to maintain identity and culture in the
wake of globalization that is sweeping the world.
Before we attempt to dwell on this topic it is
important to understand what we mean by culture
and what we mean by traditions. Loosely these
terms can be translated as samskriti and paddhati.
As a result of the preservation of cultural and
traditions, a small vibrant community of
Deshasthas played a very important role in the
history, development and growth of the Deccan in
the 17th and 18th century. It might be pertinent to
understand as to where they got their inspiration,
vision, skills and guidance from. It is definitely
from imbibing culture and traditions.
Let me attempt to look at Brand identity using a
framework of Kapferer (1992) an eminent
marketing academician in his book Strategic Brand
Management We can possibly extend to our
community as well.
Social skills are twice as important as pure intellect &
science.
It has always been a challenge for the mankind to
deal with fellow human beings effectively. Recent
studies conducted indicate that when it comes to
achieving excellence, Social skills are twice as
important as pure intellect and expertise.
Role of Neuroscience :Our brain is a connection
machine. It tends to wire all information it
receives. Just as water flowing in the ground
creates grooves; our brain also creates this wiring.
From our childhood, the skills we developed, the
information we know, the opinions and beliefs we
have, are stored in our brain. We can call this as
‘Hard wiring’.
This hard wiring helps us to carry out our daily
task with least effort. Now, read this sentence
“Wrer we albe to raed tihs? I am sure we would
have read. This is because of our hard wiring. We
do not need complete information; with a sample
we are able to make decisions. A home maker
identifying whether a dish is cooked properly or
not- just by looking at the colour of the dish, an
engineer identifying a defect in equipment just by
hearing the sound, we driving our vehicles -the list
is endless.
But the flip side is, the opinions and beliefs we
have are also hard wired. So there are three partsthe Hard wiring, the Emotion and the Action
which in this case is getting in to an argument.
When emotions are demonstrated it derails the
discussion.
How to manage this?
Strategies and initiatives for building our identity:
Start cultural practices at home as an individual.
Stuti literature – learn them to develop inner
strength. Soft culture (art, music, poetry etc) –for
holistic development of personality. Learn
standard Marathi as it would help in strengthening
our dialect and would aid in cultural interface. We
need to give space to each other whether Madhvas
or Smarthas. At least one samuhik function as a
group once every year can be organized.

Observing our emotions, Defer discussions and
avoid writing mails when emotional. Expressing
our emotions rather than demonstrating ( share
that we are angry rather than shouting and
throwing tantrums)
Communicate assertively:
When we do this, there is a higher probability for
us to build better relationships with others and
achieve the Goals.

Reality is not Perception! What you see is not
what you understand and what you understand is
not what you see.
Therefore you should avoid making assumptions.
For example: In a wedding reception two ladies
are chatting , they are from the groom's side , one
asks the other " Is the girl employed?" The other
answers " Moonji i paartha theriyale"(The face
does not indicate that the girl is employed). I
explained how wrong it is make conclusive
remarks like this, which are baseless.
Let me narrate the story of one John. His boss is
not able to get work done thru John , though he
feels John is basically a nice fellow. He visits John's
house and enquires with his wife . She laments
"John has never provided enough monthly income
for the family." The son complains that his father
john always chides him, the daughter says her
father john always buys her whatever she wants.
John's boss goes to the social club, which John
frequents, every one has a good opinion to tell
about John. The manager is confused as to the
nature of John, confronts him and asks him
"John what kind of a person are you?" John replies,
" I don't know sir “. The lesson is - If john himself
does not know what kind of person he is , is it
right on the part of his boss to put a stamp on his
character?
Voice Modulation! How a tone in the voice in
communication led to fracas between a MIL and a
DIL and the DIL went off to her mother's place to
cool off.
Psychological Filters!How people put
psychological filters and do not listen fully, what is
being told to them. Also people should understand
that they need to listen to what is being told
instead of trying to find out who is telling it
Communication Game: The result of the
communication and perception (The sketch) was
explained, as to how improvement can be done on
communication as well as by perception.
