DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
A handball day in the local school based on
School handball philosophy of Danish Handball Association:
• children can participate in some sports (football, basketball)
spontaneously, where they can find place and possibilities for it
• other sports (volleyball, handball) demand some conditions for
participation – such as knowledge of special rules, a special court,
equipment….
• some sport activities are better in schools than other
• through school sport children develop physically, psychologically and
socially – not as specialists in specific sports
• school sport must present the children to basic motor functions
from different sports – from handball: throwing, catching, dribling,
competition……
• through school sport children must learn about the activities in the
local sport clubs
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
A handball day in the local school based on
School handball philosophy of Danish Handball Association:
It means DON’T PLAY HANDBALL IN THE SCHOOLS !!!!
- BUT introduce elements from handball to the children
- AND introduce the local handball club to the children
- OR even better let the local handball club introduce it
self and handball activities to the children
RUNNING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
How to introduce handball activities to children in schools:
1. The school invites a coach as a guest
teacher one or more times.
2. Use handball players in the school as
ambassadors and/or guest teachers for other
pupils in the school
3. Invite school classes to participate in training
lessons in the handball club – or invite them to
exciting matches
4. Organize handball festivals/tournaments for all
pupils in selected classes – in normal school
time (in close cooperation with the teachers)
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
Handball festival:
1. For children 6-8 year
2. Races, 1-2 funny games with high intensity, minihandball
3. Every child participate in 4-5 activities of 10-15 minutes. Activity/rest by
turns – 15 min. activity, 15 min. rest…………
4. The activities are lead by coaches from the handball club and teachers
5. During the festival coaches from the handball club get acquainted with
teachers and children – and inform them about handball and the
activities in the local club.
6. The festival begins and ends with activities involving all children
7. The children participate on mixed teams (sex, classes….)
8. The children get information materials from the handball club
9. The teachers get inspiration materials to use in psychical
education after the festival
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
Handball tournament:
1. For children 9-12 years
2. Handball matches
3. Every child participate in 3--5 matches of 10-15 minutes. Play in pools,
semi finales and finale.
4. Coaches from the handball club are referees. Teachers are team leaders.

What is going on in
Germany?
Results of the DSB-SPRINTStudy, published in 2006

plays in physical education can be
seen.
• What are the reasons?

How to motivate children/pupils ??
- to participate in physical activities
- and particularly in HANDBALL !!!!
Steen Hjorth
EHF WG Handball at School
Development Specialist, Danmark Handball Association
IHF CPP Commission
The questions are:
1. Whom do we have
to motivate ?
2. How do we motivate ?
each single child or
groups of children
?
OR
Teachers/sports teachers
Parents
?
?
BU
Y!
Handball ????
What is handball ??
Let’s play handball !
BUT – WHY ??
Some arguments:
1. Handball is adapted to children.
2. Handball is a funny activity with other children
3. Handball is playing with other children
4. Handball is competitions with/against other children
5. Handball gives many challenges to children
6. Handball gives children the possibility to experience
success and failure
1. Handball is adapted to children.
1. Handball is adapted to children.
1. Handball is adapted to children.
2. Handball is a funny activity with other children
Funny to participate in !!!!
Funny to watch !!!!
3. Handball is playing with other children
The character of play is
High level of
engagement
Variation
New
challenges
High level of
intensity
- on the terms
of children
4. Handball is competitions with/against other children
Competition-exercises in training
– learning to win and loose
Competition in matches – tournaments/festivals…..
BUT
Competitions are OK – but the most important
mission is to create an environment of development
5. Handball gives many challenges to children
In handball a child can
- improve its technical abilities (become a better handball player)
- improve its motor functions and ability to coordinate movements
- improve its intellectual abilities (by thinking body, handball…
)
- improve its social abilities (team game)
6. Handball gives children the possibility to experience success and
failure
Many contacts with the ball
Many possibilities to score goals
Many possibilities to steal – or loose – the ball
Many possibilities to learn that ”Practice makes perfect”
Attractive rules which motivate the children to participate
Our mission as responsible for handball:
To discuss if handball is a sport,
- that motivates teachers to introduce handball for pupils in schools
OR
- that motivates parents to send their children to handball
YES
NO
How do we promote handball to increase the number
of young handball players ??
How do we develop handball to be an attractive
sport for children and young handball players ??

3° ITALIAN HANDBALL FESTIVAL
THE FESTIVAL DRAWN BY YOUNG
ATHLETES
CONCLUSIONS
• … Thanks to the Federal Project
“The handball in Italian primary
schools – Traget fair play” in fews
months hundred and hundred boys
and girls from all Italy have been
attracted by the game of
handball.
• The handball capability to involve
every one which approach to the
game, the possibility to practice
it in a schooll context with mixed
teams under the supervisions of
teachers technically prepared, the
constant assistance of Federation…
has conferred the success of this
project.
• Inside the Project it is
important to underline
both sports purposes
and educational aims
(fair play).
All these own aspects
which in a team sport
represent the key
concepts to pass to
young people.
•
•
The young athletes have always
replied with big enthusiasm and
interest to the Project ”by
testifying it” sending pictures,
drawn, text to the FIGH School
Office, as proof of the important
direct relations established
between the world of School and
Federation.
Objective of the Federal Project
is not only to find in advance
future champions to put on the
bench, not emphasize the
competition, otherwise to diffuse
in the Primary School loyal and
constructive behaviours, useful to
stimulate all protagonists to play
correctly and have fun with own
friends and also to steer the
choice of following the practice of
this team sport.
The FIGH wishes that the
experience of its project can
be useful to help the
promotion and the
development of the handball.
• …
The Handball Italian Federation would
thanks the European Federation which
authorized the use of mascottes Josy,
Harry and Max.
How to motivate children/pupils
Summary
As usual – very different possibilities for the Federations
In many countries handball is a small sport and other sports are more
attractive for children/parents/teachers

Péter SÁNDOR
(Hungary)
Introduction
The Hungarian Handball sport belongs to the world-forefront since long years, decades
too.
Based on the summarised results on the world Championship’s, European
Championship’s and Olympic Game’s table Hungary achieved first place in the year
1998, third place in 1999, second place in 2000, second in the IHF ranking in the year
2005. In our country immense values are accumulated in the fields of experience,
practice and mentality of handball coaching.
The popularity of handball in Hungary is very high, both in spectators and practicants.
Observing the situation of printed and electronic media in Hungary, the presence and
live coverages, the handball is a very strong concurrent (rival) for the football (soccer).
The Europan Handball Federation established in 1999 the Metodological Committee for
the development and unification of handball coach training, to form the new structure of
coaches formation.
As a result the Hungarian Handball Federation founded its International Coach Training
Center in Budapest (2000), with the task to build, fulfil and control the formation of
handball coaches in Hungary. In all kind of our activity we have close collaboration with
IHF and EHF – Rinck Convention – as well as with the Physical Education and Sport
Science Faculty of Semmelweiss University – Hungary.
What can we give to our handball coaches and to our P.E. teachers, who are
working with children at different schools?
