O
ne of the highlights
of the yearly Saint
Bartholomew fiestas is on right now.
The fiestas held in Tejina in
the north of Tenerife are also
known as Los Corazones de
Tejina after the central attraction of the whole two week long
celebrations. These are the
huge model hearts that are
made up in pairs – one larger than the other – and covered and intertwined with fruit,
vegetables and flour and water
shapes representing various
aspects of religion and rural
life, with a final crown of
flowers. They are elaborate
and enormous and can reach
a weight of 800 kilos – needing to be carried by up to 25
men.

Flower battle and other attractions, many of them based
around the wonderful heart

the Plaza de la Iglesia with

and the celebrations continue
through the night, culminating
in fireworks.
