NHTI grad and skydiving fanatic makes biggest jump of his life
Mike Meehan’s feet might be on the ground, but the sky’s the limit for his manufacturing career
A
ccording to Marcus E. Mann of Turbocam International in Barrington, NH, there is a $1 trillion backlog of manufacturing
work in the global aerospace industry, and his company intends to go after it. What’s more, the company is looking to New
Hampshire community college graduates like NHTI’s Michael Meehan ’14 to help build a workforce that can support the
company’s growth and keep up with the swiftly evolving technologies that make Turbocam a leading manufacturer for the aerospace,
automotive, marine and power generation markets.
Turbocam has hired 81 new employees in the last year, and Meehan is one of
the people it relies on in its recruiting process. Meehan has associate degrees in
mechanical engineering technology and manufacturing engineering technology, and
was hired by the company right after graduation last May.
So how did the gregarious engineering technician become a representative of
the growing company so quickly? One might say the former skydiving instructor
fell into the profession, but his employers say there was a bit more to the process —
and the candidate — than that.
“Mike has ambition and know-how,” says Mann, who met Meehan while
representing Turbocam at NHTI’s advanced manufacturing career fair last April. “I
was there when he picked up his application and again when he came back to NHTI
to recruit for us.”
Less than six months on the job and Meehan was back on the NHTI campus to recruit more students. For his part, Meehan said
he was “stoked to go back and do it.”
“I’d come full circle,” he said, about being behind the recruiting table at NHTI’s fall career fair. “For me it was pretty awesome to go
there and catch up with professors. I mean, I got a job — I’m working. It took a little while to sink in. I did not see myself where I am
now five months ago. I figured I’d be sky diving, throwing job applications out, hoping maybe something would pop up.”
It took him 3.5 years to earn his degrees, but less than a month after graduation to get into the workforce. Meehan said he pursued
both degrees so that he would be a well-rounded and flexible part of the production process. “Mechanical engineers don’t do ‘this’ and
manufacturing engineers don’t do ‘that,’” he said. “They have to go back and forth. I figured I might as well learn both how to design
parts and how they’re actually built.”
What of those who may not be convinced about opportunities in the field? Meehan says advanced manufacturing offers fulfilling
careers with above average pay potential, but in turn candidates need technical skills. “Manufacturing is a good place to start,” he says.
“It’s not going away, even with advanced technology. You always have to keep your mind fresh; you can always go further than you are
because there are no dead ends. But it’s more than pushing buttons; you need skills. Education is important. One of the things you
hear is you’ll never use this stuff again: measurements and statistics. But it’s everywhere.”
Meehan credits NHTI not only for connecting him directly with his employer, but also for providing strong student supports as he
learned technical skills. “Some of the classes were difficult,” Meehan admitted, “but there was always help at NHTI: the learning center,
the math lab — you can stay after class. Everyone is eager to give you a hand and help out, provided you show some effort.”
Meehan will return to NHTI again this spring, when the college plans to hold another advanced manufacturing career fair.

The Perfect Place for Me
W
hile Kelsey Hurd-Fields was
still in high school, she took
a course called Exploring
Teaching that changed her life. “I knew
then that this was the thing I wanted to
wake up and do every morning,” she
says. “It was a way to be around kids who
needed me. And I needed them.”
But while her goal was clear, the path
to getting there was not an easy one.
“I had a rough
ending in high school,”
says Kelsey. “My GPA
wasn’t where it should
be, and I wasn’t sure
I could make it in
college. NHTI was the
perfect place for me to
get started.”
Clearly, Kelsey was able to “make it”
in college. During her time at NHTI she
served as President of the NHTI Education
Club, and won a prestigious $1,500 NASA
scholarship. She earned her associate
degree in Education with a Concentration
in Special Ed in 2013.
“NHTI has been my favorite school
so far,” she says. “I feel like I got a valuable
education here, and the professors really
cared about me. I was getting into
classrooms -- teaching science and math in
the Bow elementary school -- even a class
in poetry for 2nd graders!”
Kelsey is now at SNHU working on a
Bachelor’s in Elementary Education with
Dual Certification in Special Ed.

From Nurses to Legal Nurse Consultants
T
he growing complexity of the health care system, and its increasing
entanglement with the legal system, has given rise in recent years to a
new class of professional: the Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC). LNCs are
professional nurses with both clinical expertise and training in the law. They provide
an invaluable service to both the medical and legal professions.
In the fall of 2011, NHTI became the first school in New Hampshire to offer an
on-site certificate program in this new and growing field. Approved by the American
Bar Association, the program is designed for experienced Registered Nurses who are
interested in becoming Legal Nurse Consultants. With the combined resources of
its Paralegal and Nursing programs, NHTI is uniquely equipped to provide the legal
knowledge and practical field experience LNCs require to evaluate, analyze and offer
informed opinions on the delivery of healthcare and the resulting outcomes.
Sarah Krycki earned her associate degree at NHTI
back in 1993. “I felt better prepared for my nursing
career with my associate degree than many people I met
who had four-year degrees,” she says.
“I was always interested in the legal aspect of
nursing,” says Sara. “I even tried to find a program for
something like Legal Nurse Consulting back in the ‘90’s,
but there wasn’t anything. Then one day I heard an ad
for NHTI’s program on the radio and I thought, ‘This is
it! This is what I want to do!’
“As older nurses we are near the top of our salary
Sarah Krycki, RN, LNC
range, but as consultants we can earn much more.
After I graduated [from the LNC program] I found an
opportunity with Genesis Health Care. I didn’t quite double my salary, but it’s the
perfect job.
“I owe a lot to NHTI,” says Sarah. “I am who I am because of NHTI. I tell
everybody, start at NHTI and end at NHTI.”
Like Sarah, Julie Jacobs had always been interested
in the legal aspects of the nursing profession. An RN
for 25 years, working mostly at Concord Hospital, Julie
felt she was ready for new challenges – and perhaps an
increased income.
“I was very excited when this program came along,”
she says. “I didn’t think this was something I would be
able to study successfully online.”
Julie interned at a law firm as part of the LNC
program requriements, and is now working there
part-time to get the hours she needs to obtain her LNC
certification – all while maintaining her nursing career.
Julie Jacobs, RN,
BSN, BC, LNC
“[The LNC] progam has allowed me to provide
legal insight and expertise in my hospital nursing career, as well as in my new position
with the law firm,” she says. “My expertise in the legal field is highly beneficial to my
co-workers at the hospital, and my medical expertise is beneficial to the attorneys at
the firm.
“[Department Head] Stacey Peters has done a fabulous job with this program.
The range of courses offered – and the array of professors she brings in – are
unbelievable, covering every aspect of law that we need. I would highly recommend
this program to the nurse who wishes to expand her horizons in the legal field.”

A Note of Thanks
[From Jess Paey, Radiologic Technology
Class of 2012, to Prof. Sandra Beliveau]
Dear Sandy,
I
am having a great time and really
enjoying the Physician’s Assistant
program at MCPHS [formerly
Massachusetts College of Pharmacy &
Health Science]. Your recommendation
letter recently helped me secure a
$1,000 scholarship from WentworthDouglass Hospital, so thanks a bunch!
It feels like a lateral transition from
NHTI to MCPHS. The professional
standards and lecture settings are the
same. There are so many similarities
to the Radiology program. I owe it to
you and the radiology staff at NHTI for
preparing me and making this transition
for me truly seamless. I feel that I
already practice all the expectations
set for MCPHS because of my time at
NHTI.
