welcome .............................................................
I am delighted to welcome you to the Breck Film Fest.
The Town of Breckenridge is honored to host the BFF
throughout our community, especially in the über cool
Arts District and the iconic BGV Community Center &
Summit County South Branch Library, including the
Speakeasy Theater.
Breckenridge is an amazing place to visit…..and an
even better place to live. We are a small community
that offers incredible world-class recreation, fantastic
arts, great shopping and a vibrant restaurant scene,
while providing a safe, friendly and fun community for
our citizens to live, work, play and raise a family.
Welcome to the Breck Film Fest. This fall marks the
Festival’s 36th year and will feature over 60 films
selected from the hundreds submitted from
around the world. This year’s selections include
compelling documentaries, mystery thrillers,
a great Adventure Reel, some special screenings with
special guests, and something for just
about everyone who loves film. Dozens of filmmakers
will be attending and looking forward to
presenting their works and interacting with attendees.
Surrounded by the majesty of the Rocky Mountains,
Breckenridge has one of the largest historic districts in
Colorado. Located in the heart of town is a thriving arts
campus bookended by the Riverwalk Center and the
newly expanded Breckenridge Theater. You can take a
class, see a show or meet an artist-in-residence.
Screenings will be offered at venues throughout the
historic and bustling Town of Breckenridge that has
embarked on a major cultural arts effort. Significant
capital investments have been made at the Riverwalk
Center, as well as our completely renovated and
digitized Speakeasy Theater. We are excited that the
Breckenridge Theater will return this year as a film
festival venue after a major expansion and complete
remodel.
Of course, living in a ski town means that we are all
about recreation. From the downhill experience at
the Breckenridge ski area to our Nordic centers and
backcountry trails, winter has plenty to offer. Summer
is truly a joy with miles of trails to hike, run and bike,
and if you are a golfer, you’ll love our 27-hole Jack
Nicholas-designed links.
In addition to visiting the numerous fine shops,
restaurants and galleries throughout Breckenridge,
please take some time to visit and explore the new
Arts District on RidgeStreet. The Breckenridge Film
Festival is proud and excited to be a part of this arts
renaissance. Enjoy the fall colors, the community and
the Breck Film Fest.
While the scenery and offerings of Breckenridge
are truly remarkable, they are nothing without our
people. Passionate and driven, the citizens - from the
longtime local to the seasonal second home owner make Breckenridge what it is. They are active outdoor
enthusiasts and give of themselves as docents, board
members and volunteers.
Gary Martinez
President of the Breck FIlm Fest
I hope you will enjoy our slice of heaven, and thank
you for supporting the Breck FIlm Fest!

..........................................
Welcome to the 36th Breck Film Fest! We are so
excited to have you here with us in Breckenridge for
the weekend. Join us as we welcome more than 30
filmmakers who represent half of the films we’ll screen
this weekend. And join me in thanking the sponsors,
grantors and individual donors who make this annual
weekend possible.
Our mission is to present these diverse film experiences
to audiences local, regional, national and international
in our authentic mountain town. From screenings to
talkback forums to workshops – and everything in
between – we hope you’ll enjoy your time here and take
away not only a piece of Breckenridge, but a piece of
the world as you experience it through the power of the
camera lens.
Inspire. Educate. Entertain.
You’ll see these words throughout our festival. Together,
they serve as the guiding principles that have governed
our festival in the past, present and into the future.
Stories have the power to accomplish all three.
As William Roper of the Orton Family Foundation
said, “Stories can accomplish what no other form of
communication can – they can get through to our
hearts with a message. In our world of information
transfer, data exchange, and media impressions, where
we have become callused by so much communication,
stories have the ability to speak to us about what truly
matters.”
So join us in this communal viewing experience. Absorb
all that we have to offer. Take part in our talkback forums
and engage with one another at the parties. And by all
means, don’t miss our HP Workstation Tech Station at
the Riverwalk Center!
We hope our 2016 lineup will spur discussion, insight
and sharing with your broader communities.
Thank you for joining us in Breckenridge in our 36th
year.

Somm: Into the Bottle
Documentary, Dir: Jason Wise, 90 min
From the director and team that brought
you ‘SOMM,’ the celebrated documentary
behind the quest of four individuals
studying to pass one of the most difficult
tests you’ve NEVER heard of, comes
the sequel –‘SOMM: Into the Bottle’.
Viewers are taken beyond the exam and
down the wine (bottle) rabbit hole. The
world’s most famous winemakers and
sommeliers unravel what makes wine
the most compelling elixir, a beverage
that is uniquely intertwined with the
history of mankind.
‘SOMM: Into the Bottle’ brings viewers a rare and never before seen glimpse inside the private world of both
famed and cult winemakers, such as Jean Louis Chave, Aubert de Villaine (Domaine Romanee-Conti), and Robert
Mondavi. Viewers get to watch as some of the most storied bottles of wine are opened; in some cases less than
a dozen are left in the world. The history, the vintage, and the magic of these bottles are discussed by the best in
the business. The film also tackles wine as it intersects with politics, pleasure, world war, natural disasters, religion,
and the age old question, “Can a bottle be worth thousands of dollars or is it just great marketing?”
Enjoy the film following a gourmet popcorn and prosecco pairing from

LIFE, ANIMATED Dir: Roger Ross Williams, 89 min
Imagine being trapped inside a Disney movie and
having to learn about life mostly from animated characters
dancing across a screen of color. A fantasy? A nightmare?
Life, Animated is the real-life story of Owen Suskind,
the son of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind
and his wife, Cornelia. An autistic boy who couldn’t speak for years, Owen memorized dozens of Disney
movies, turned them into a language to express love and loss, kinship, brotherhood. The family was forced
to become animated characters, communicating with him in Disney dialogue and song; until they all
emerge, together, revealing how, in darkness, we all literally need stories to survive.
Following the film, join Disney animator (and Summit County native) Elise Scanlan and Colorado Public
Radio film critic Howie Movshovitz in a discussion about how Disney bonds humanity.
