Divine Mercy Sunday
“Jesus I Trust in You”
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND CYO
Contact the Religious Education and Youth Group Office:
[email protected] or 703-759-3530.
The Sunday after Easter is known as “Divine Mercy
Sunday.”
NO CCD CLASSES—Christ is Risen! There is no CCD this
week in honor of the Resurrection!
Last April, while celebrating a penitential service in
Saint Peter’s Basilica, our Holy Father, Pope Francis,
announced an “Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy,”
saying he wants to make it evident that the Church’s
mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not
forget that God forgives and God forgives always,”
Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for
forgiveness.”
SATURDAY, APRIL 9TH—CYO BINGO AND GAME
NIGHT!—The CYO is hosting a game night after the 5:30pm
Mass on Saturday, April 9th. The main entertainment that
evening will be Bingo, complete with prizes and a number of
other games, music, and entertainment will be offered! What a
great way to celebrate and feast as Catholics in this season of
Lent. All teens are invited from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. Stop on
by!
Christ’s Mercy is His greatest gift to the world.
Through His mercy, Christ has compassion on our
weaknesses and shows His love for us because He
wishes to extend forgiveness for our sins. Christ came to
reconcile us with the Father and to bring us true and
lasting peace. This peace, which comes as a result of the
indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our souls, comes from
accepting Christ’s mercy.
2016 WEEK OF GRACES—This summer we will be
reviving our week long, summer Week of Graces. This
program is for children ages 5-12 in the morning during the
week of July 18th. We are in need, at this time, of volunteers to
sign up to help lead classrooms, assist lead catechists, organize
crafts, prepare materials, or act as hallway and break-time
monitors. Please email the Office of Religious Education for
more information or to volunteer to help!
We and the world are very much in need of mercy.
Many people believe that the sins in their life are so
great that God could not possibly forgive them! The
Church places for us the Devotion to the Divine Mercy
of Jesus, precisely to give generously the gift of Christ’s
forgiveness of our sins.
2016-2017 CATECHISTS—Are you interested in teaching or
helping out with CCD in the fall? We are in need of a number
of people to help out as catechists (leading CCD classes),
assistants (helping catechists with their class and occasionally
substituting), and tutors (working with children in small
groups to help prepare for sacraments or catch up on prayers).
The commitment is one hour per week and we can usually
accommodate age group preferences. Even if you have never
done it, we provide training and we can help you “get your
feet wet” with an experienced catechist. Please email the
Office of Religious Education for more information or to
volunteer to help!
The Feast of Divine Mercy is at the request of a
revelation to St. Faustina. In that revelation Our Lord
told St. Faustina,
“I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a
refuge and shelter for all souls, and
especially poor sinners. On that day the
very depths of My tender mercy are open. I
pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the
souls who approach the Fount of My
Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates
through which graces flow are opened. Let
no soul fear to draw near to Me, even
though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind
will not have peace until it turns to the
Fount of My Mercy”.
In this Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy announced
by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, please join us as a
parish family to pray for His Mercy on us and on the
whole world!
2016-2017 CYO VOLUNTEERS—Our CYO program works
with the youth of the parish. We have two CYO groups: our
junior group which is comprised of children from third
through seventh grade and our senior group which is
comprised of youth from eighth grade through high school.
We need a number of parishioners to volunteer to spend time
with the youth of our parish. This includes helping out at
monthly CYO meetings (usually held on Saturdays or
Sundays) and coming along on with our social activities once
per month (something fun and active). Working with the CYO
is a great opportunity to hand on the faith to young of our
parish, who rely on as many solid examples of a joyful
Catholic life as possible. Please email the Office of Religious
Education for more information or to volunteer to help!
FORMED IS HERE (ONLINE ADULT FAITH
FORMATION)—Saint Catherine of Siena is participating in
FORMED, an online learning program presented by the
Augustine Institute. There are a number of videos available in
a Netflix style viewing experience, including basics on the
Catholic faith (Father Barron’s Catholicism), spirituality,
family movies, scripture study, and other formation. It is
completely free! And, it is a great tool to share with friends,
family members, and co-workers who want to learn more
about the faith! Browse to www.formed.org and enter the
parish code F6KWXM (it is case sensitive!). Share with
others!

WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION
MOVIE SCREENING
Please join us on Thursday, April 7th at 7 PM in Bishop Justs
Hall for a screening of the movie Many Beautiful Things. It is
the untold story of one of the world's greatest women
artists and why her name was nearly lost to history. Many
Beautiful Things plunges viewers into the complex age of
Victorian England to meet Lilias Trotter, a daring young
woman who defied all norms by winning the favor of
England's top art critic, John Ruskin. In an era when women
were thought incapable of producing high art, Ruskin
promised that her work could be "immortal." But with her
legacy on the line, Lilias made a stunning decision that bids
us to question the limits of sacrifice. As Lilias journeys to
French Algeria in the late 1800's to pioneer missionary work
with women and children viewers are left to wonder "Could
you abandon a dream to pursue your true calling?"
Featuring the voices of Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey)
and John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones).
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson
(As We Forgive) with original music by Sleeping at Last.

SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA PRO- LIFE COMMITTEE
On Saturday 2 April and Sunday 3 April, St. Catherine’s
Pro-Life Committee will sponsor a Baby Bottle Fund Drive
to support A Best Choice. A Best Choice is a Northern
Virginia Pro-Life service that provides free ultra-sounds to
expectant mothers as well as pro-life counseling and
alternatives for these mothers who are so often scared and
hopeless. A Best Choice works witnesses for the most
vulnerable among us, the unborn and their mothers. A
Best Choice shows a mother her baby in motion and then
helps the mother understand that there are alternatives to
the abortion industry. The fund drive is easy: we will
distribute baby bottles after the masses and ask that
parishioners take a bottle(s), fill it with change, cash, or a
check and return it to the Church the next week. Please
make checks to: A Best Choice Mobile Ultrasound.

March 27, 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Lord Jesus,
As we rejoice on this Easter Day and throughout the fifty days of the Easter season, do not the words of
the psalmist echo over and over again: “Praise the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever” (Ps 136:1)?
God’s mercy is revealed clearly and so intentionally in the Dying and Rising of His Only-begotten Son, sent to
be our Savior and Redeemer precisely through His victory over evil, sin, suffering and eternal death.
Yes, “Jesus Christ is the Face of the Father’s Mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 1). In His words and actions, we see
revealed to us how loved we are by Our Father, how enveloped we are by His mercy. We encounter His mercy
every time we receive the Sacrament of Penance, which the Risen Lord Jesus instituted and gave to His apostles
and through them to His Church on that first Easter night. During the Last Supper, Jesus Christ instituted both
the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Holy Orders, these sacraments being confirmed, in a
sense, by His Dying on the Cross and by His Rising on Easter. And in His new commandment to love, the Lord
reveals the depths of His Father’s mercy towards us and of the corresponding mission given us to be convincing
heralds of this same divine mercy to everyone we encounter.
Yes, in the Dying and Rising of Jesus Christ, the mercy of Our God is so clearly revealed, so that, in
turn, we become its heralds every day!
Assuring you of my prayers, especially on Easter and throughout the Easter Season, I remain
Faithfully in the Heart of Christ,
Most Reverend Paul S. Loverde
Bishop of Arlington
