October 2005 - Oldsmobile Club of Arizona
OCTOBER 2005 THIS WAS MY FATHER’S OLDSMOBILE by John Habeeb My father purchased a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 holiday coupe back on October 2nd 1969. At the time I was in 6th grade and not to much envolved with cars. I remember he took my older sister who was just about to get her drivers license down with him to Big 2 Oldsmobile in Mesa. From recently talking to her she said he asked her... "Which one do you like since you might be driving it to school?" There was a Ming Jade Cutlass Supreme and a Gold Nugget 442 setting next to it on the showroom floor. I asked which one did you choose? Did you know the 442 was the performance model? She smiled and said "...with the sporty steering wheel, rims and 442 emblems..." How was the Cutlass optioned? "I tried not to look over at it too much..." I inherited the car from my dad in 1981. I drove it for a few years. During that time it went though a few performance upgrades and a fresh paint… CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 MASH 442 PICS PAGE 4 CLUB NEWS PAGE 5 Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – January 2004 CLASSIFIEDS PAGE 10 1 2005 Board of Directors President Gloria Varley [email protected] 480.368.1410 Vice President Stu Schindler [email protected] 480.892.5524 Secretary Charli Terry [email protected] 480.892.5524 Treasurer Carol Alfter [email protected] 623.780.3529 Membership Chairman Marc Beaulac [email protected] 480.279.5556 Newsletter Chairman/Editor Karl Sup [email protected] 480.985.6683 Activities Chairman Frank Alfter [email protected] 623.780.3529 Chapter Representative Jim Schultz [email protected] 928.636.2405 VIP MEMBERS Webmaster Karl Sup Assistant to the Editor Stu Schindler President’s Message It’s that time of year again to start making plans for 2006. All members are strongly encouraged to renew their dues early. This year we are offering 2 year renewals in addition to the 1 year renewal. Soon we will be sending in a list of our club members to the Oldsmobile Club of America (the national club), to ensure that we are compliant with their rule that states that our club members must also be a member of their club. If we are non-compliant we are at risk of losing our charter. It’s also time to renew or place a business card ad in our newsletter. You will find all the information you need to perform these tasks in this newsletter. Our annual elections will be taking place this month at our meeting on October 22 nd. So far the President and Vice President positions are vacant. We need some club members to step up and take the reigns so that our club doesn’t fall apart. Please don’t let this happen. If you’ve never held a board position it’s time you did. Especially if you’ve been a club member for a long time and have never held a position. Since we are in the computer age it is necessary for whoever holds these positions to have email. The club is going to Bisbee, Arizona on October 15th to spend the night and tour the copper mines (and have a great time!). If you haven’t reserved a hotel room at the Copper Queen yet, you may be out of luck, but you can still give it a shot. If they are full, give Frank Alfter a call and he may be able to help you wit h alternate lodging. On October 22 nd we will once again have an informal car show at Julio G’s. This event is called Rockets On The Green and is free! Our monthly meeting will take place during the show. In November we have a couple of great events. The first one is the Greenway High School Show on November 6th, and then our Cruise & Eat on November 12th will take us to Tortilla Flats for lunch. Our annual Holiday Party is taking place on December 3rd at Cantina Laredo. This is the same place that we held it last year. If you attended last year or know someone who attended then you know how good the food is. Everything was absolutely incredible. This year we will place our food orders in advance to help the restaurant out. Mark December 3rd on your calendar now! Our Annual All Oldsmobile Show will take place next February 25th. It’s time to start gathering door prizes and items to stuff in the goodie bags. If every club member could please collect a minimum of 1 door prize and one item to stuff in each of the 100 bags we will be preparing we would be in great shape. Good places to ask for door prizes are businesses that you frequent. Gift certificates as well as merchandise are always welcome. Please bring any items you receive to the mo nthly meetings or call me to make arrangements. Look for information on all the above mentioned events in this newsletter. Happy Oldsmobiling! Gloria DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTAL TO THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Information to be considered for submittal in to the newsletter needs to be received by the 1st of the month. Please send your information as an email or attach it to your email in word document form. If you have problems or questions please ask any board member and they will happily assist you. If you do not have access to a computer, please send your submittal to: Karl Sup, 2355 S. Wildrose Circle, Mesa, AZ 85209. Otherwise, email all information to [email protected]. Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – October 2005 2 THIS WAS MY FATHER’S OLDSMOBILE by John Habeeb CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 1983 The AZ sun can be brutal as we all know and we didn't have a garage at that time! After I moved out to Queen Creek it went into garage storage for 18 years. The car was resurrected in December of 2003. It went through a complete frame-on weekend ‘restofication’ process. Everything was replaced or rebuilt. Being that the car spent its entire life in the Arizona desert it was a very solid and completely rust free vehicle. 1973 While I don't have the build sheet I do have the original owners manual, plastic folder and Protect-O Plate. I also have the AZ state registration slips from 1970-1985 when it went into storage. I decided to dedicate the car to my dad. In 1988 Olds used the slogan "It's not your father's Oldsmobile" Mine reads on the lower trunk deck "This was my father's Oldsmobile" NEW BUILD SHEET • 468 cubic inches • Edelbrock Performer heads and Torker intake 10.3:1 CR • Pro Systems Pro Series 4150 950 CFM custom built for my application • Pertronix Flame Thrower HEI w/digital rev limiter • Camshaft 239°/239° @ .050 .541" Intake Lift .541" Exhaust Lift 110° Lobe Separation • Thorley headers 1 3/4" tubes 3" collector Torque Tech 3" X-pipe system w/ 22" large case Aero Chamber mufflers • Flowmaster stainless steel 3 1/2" x 12" tips • TCI Turbo 400 • Coan Maximum Performance 10" 3200 RPM stall converter • Strange Engineering 3" chrome-moly driveshaft, 1350 series u-joints • Moser Engineering complete 12 bolt assembly, Eaton 33 spline posi and 4.11:1 pro gears • Hotchkis upper and lower trailing arms • Hotchkis 1" drop Sport Springs on all 4 corners • Edelbrock IAS classic shocks …and more… Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – October 2005 3 PROGRESSIVE DINNER PHOTOS – M*A*S*H 442 by Ginger Korcal 442 Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – October 2005 4 ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT NEXT MEETING, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2005 The next meeting of the Oldsmobile Club of Arizona will be held on Saturday October 22nd at 1pm during the Rockets on the Green free car show at Julio G’s Restaurant on Indian School Road in Scottsdale. Following the car show at 3pm, the club will have its reserved parking at the Scottsdale Pavilions Shopping Center, Loop 101 and Indian Bend Rd in Scottsdale, in the Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s parking lot. This is great time to have a meal and talk with Olds friends. Come out and join the fun! ANNUAL ELECTIONS FOR OFFICERS Our annual elections will take place at our next meeting. We took nominations at September's meeting, and will accept more nominations at October's meeting. If you are interested in nominating someone (with their approval) for an elected position please do so at the next meeting. Nominations for Officers are as follows: President: Open Vice President: Open Secretary: Charli Terry Treasurer: Carol Alfter The appointed positions have been filled. They are: Chapter Rep to the Pacific SW Zone: Jim Schultz Membership Chairman: Marc Beaulac Newsletter Chairman/Editor: Karl Sup Activities Chairman: Frank Alfter IS YOUR NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP CURRENT? As you should know, all Oldsmobile Club of Arizona members are required to be members of the Oldsmobile Club of America (OCA), the national club. Once a year we have to submit a list of our members to them, to ensure that we are compliant with their rule. We will be submitting that very soon. If your OCA membership is not current, please renew it right away. You can tell if your membership is current if you are receiving the monthly magazine Journey With Olds (JWO). If you are not receiving this magazine, then your membership has expired. Your membership expiration date is shown on the mailing label of the JWO. If we have non-compliant members we will be in jeopardy of losing our OCA charter. Please don't let that happen. BISBEE OVERNIGHT TRIP - OCTOBER 15th, 2005 The club is going on a overnight trip to historical Bisbee, Arizona on Saturday, October 15th. We will be staying at the famous old “Copper Queen” located in the center of Bisbee where we have a block of rooms reserved. You must make your reservations no later than September 16th. When you call tell them you are with the Oldsmobile Club of Arizona. Copper Queen's number is 520-432-2216. Group Rates begin at $97.00 to $131.00 per couple ($97 for double bed, $122 for queen bed, and $131 for a king). If the Copper Queen is full when you call, ask Frank Alfter for alternate lodging suggestions. Saturday afternoon we will tour the Queen Mine (an inactive copper mine). This is an underground tour. The cost for the tour is $12.00 + Tax per person. This tour is optional. Saturday evening we will have dinner together (separate tickets), and then head back to the hotel to play Scream & Holler! This will be a great evening to laugh, relax, and get to know some of your fellow club members. Sunday morning we will have breakfast at the Copper Queen at 9:00 a.m. prior to our return to Phoenix (separate tickets). For those interested on the way home there is an optional tour of the Pima Air Museum. The museum is just off I-10 at exit 267, and is well worth the visit as it has not only a very extensive variety of military aircraft, but also quite a few one-of-a-kind aircraft that you will not see anywhere else in the world. The entrance fee varies, but for groups of 20 or more (or military, or seniors) it is $9.75 per person. Please RSVP to Frank no later than Saturday, October 1st, and don’t forget to make your hotel reservations before September 16th! Should you have any questions and want to be placed on the list of participants, please contact Frank and Carol Alfter at 623-780-3529. If attending, meet us at Burger King at Arizona Ave and Ray Rd in Chandler at 7:00 AM on the 15th to caravan to Bisbee. Burger King is on the Northeast corner and there is a large lot behind in which to park our cars for an easy turn onto Arizona Ave from Ray to head south. Our route will take us thru Florence, Tucson, Tombstone and in to Bisbee. We will have lunch in Tombstone. Julio G's has a beautiful greenbelt area where we will be parking. Our monthly meeting will take place during this show.
