Miller swam the breaststroke leg for both relays. Individually, Miller swam a personal best in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.21 (a Junior National cut). In the 200 breaststroke, Miller qualified for the bonus final heat with a time of 2:19.68 (a personal best and Junior National cut), and placed 21st overall. A notable highlight of the meet came from Lily Moldenhauer, a standout swimmer at Churchill HS, who won a gold medal in the 100 butterfly with a time of :53.45, a World Cup time standard. Northside News Northside teaching staff is 100 percent highly qualified Reprinted from BoardTalk November 18, 2008 Edition In accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act and Texas State Highly Qualified Teacher Plan, school districts must submit a report annually on whether the academic subject area classes are being taught by highly qualified teachers. The law requires that all teachers of core academic subjects in our classrooms be highly qualified, meaning that the teacher: (1) has obtained full Texas teacher certification; (2) holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree; and page 4 (3) has demonstrated subject matter competency in each of the academic subjects in which the teacher teaches, in a manner determined by TEA. According to Jim Miller, Asst. Supt. for Human Resources, as of Nov. 3, 2008, teaching staff at all 102 NISD campuses are 100 percent highly qualified. Truman, 33rd U.S. president page 5 Parents Connection News You Can Use WaterWings Dec 2008 Phelps named Sportsman of the Year Reprinted from USASwimming.org (posted 12/2/2008) Sports Illustrated has named Michael Phelps as its 2008 Sportsman of the Year. Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Olympic Games in Beijing, is the first swimmer in the magazine’s 54-year history to win the award and the sixth Olympian to be so honored. Since its inception in 1954, Sports Illustrated has presented the award each year to “the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." SI chose Phelps from the 39 nominations submitted by Sports Illustrated writers. The list of nominees included NBA star Kobe Bryant, PGA star Tiger Woods, President-elect Barack Obama and Dara Torres. Phelps’ Place in History Phelps secured his place in Olympic history by winning eight gold medals this summer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing to surpass Mark Spitz' previous gold-medal total of seven at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In the process, Phelps set seven World Records and eight Olympic Records and won five individual events. "Michael Phelps as the 2008 Sportsman of the Year was the easiest choice I have made," Sports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell said. "Look at what he did i http://www.usaswimming.org/USASWeb/_Rainbow/images/Swimmers/thumbs/phelps_gg_ acceptance.jpg n Beijing last summer. I was there. I saw him race after race, win again and again. We all saw that. It is so obvious that he changed not only swimming, but also the entire Olympic landscape." Overall, Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals over the course of his career: six gold and two bronze at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and eight gold in Beijing. Phelps ranks second in total career Olympic medals, behind Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, who won a total of 18 medals (nine gold) spanning three Olympic Games. Doing What Tiger Did for Golf USA Swimming has seen an increased interest in the sport since Phelps’ performance last August. “What Michael accomplished in Beijing was absolutely awesome, and equally impressive is the impact he has had on raising the profile of our sport in this country and across the world,” said USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus. “Michael is a remarkably talented, committed and exciting athlete, and it is wonderful to see him recognized with an award as prestigious as the SI Sportsman of the Year. He is certainly deserving of such recognition, and USA Swimming and the USA Swimming Foundation congratulate him on this historic achievement. “USA Swimming has seen unprecedented growth at many of our 2,700 swim clubs across the country since the 2008 Olympic Games and we know that we owe this post-Olympic membership boost in large part to the awe-inspiring performances by Michael Here’s to the kids who are different; The kids who don’t always get A’s. The kids who have ears, Not at all like their peers, Or have noses that go on for days. Here’s to the kids who are different; The kids who are just out of step. The kids they all tease, Who have cuts on their knees, And whose sneakers are constantly wet. Here’s to the kids who are different; The kids with a mischievous streak. For when they are grown, As history has shown, It’s their difference that makes them unique. Someone suggested that she just focus only on soccer and not waste her time playing other sports, as it will help her get the edge and might even lead to a college scholarship. Should she specialize in one sport? A: More and more children are specializing in one single sport and training year round in the hopes of gaining a competitive edge. In fact, many people feel that the notion of an all-around athlete is dying. The question of early sport specialization and year round training is a controversial one. Proponents argue that it improves young athletes’ chances of sport success and helps build winning programs. Critics argue that early specialization results in increased stress and burnout, increased injuries, and decreased fun and satisfaction. In addition, early specialization results not from children’s desire to specialize but from their from their parents. These critics also contend that the vast majority of children (over 90%) will never reach the elite levels, so specializing in one sport will rob them of the opportunity to have multiple sport experiences and learn a variety of sport and motor skills. Unfortunately, definitive research on this question is lacking. However, several national panels of experts from sports medicine and science have convened to discuss the topic. These panels have definitively stated that it is not in the best interest of the child to specialize in a single sport and engage in year round training prior to puberty. Rather multi-sport participation should be encouraged and fostered. Interestingly, recent research on elite athletes verify this conclusion, as most played multiple sports growing up and specialized in one sport in their teen years. It was felt that this allowed them to develop multiple skills, find the sport for which they were best suited, and reduced the chance of injury as well as stress induced burnout. So what does this mean for you and your daughter? I agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics expert panel recommendation that prior to puberty you should encourage your child to participate in multiple sports. Be careful, however, not to be involved in so many sports that all you do is run from practice to practice and game-togame. Participating in a number of sports will allow your daughter to develop a number of motor skills, have varied sport experiences, meet kids from varied backgrounds, and try her hand at a number of sports. It will also decrease the likelihood that she will burnout and experience an overuse injury. When your daughter is in her teens she might think about focusing more attention on one sport or play on at team in one sport for more than one season. However, she still may want to take part in other sports, but perhaps not as intensely or in so many. If she is truly talented, a time to specialize and train year round in one sport will come, but this shouldn’t be too early. All athletes should check the tatus of EVERY medication they consume (both over the counter and prescription) at the US Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) Drug Reference On-line (www. usantidoping.org/dro) or via phone at 1-800-233-0393 . This should be done immediately and prior to consuming any medications. There are medications sold over the counter that contain prohibited substances that may not be in the athlete’s system at the time of a drug test. Some medications that are sold over the counter include diuretics which are prohibited both in and out-of-competition. The following are examples of these medications: • Maximum Strength Midol PMS • Midol Pre-Menstrual Syndrome • Midol Teen Formula • Womens Tylenol Multi-Symptom Menstrual Relief • Fem-1 • Painaid PMF Premenstrual Formula • Pamprin • Lurline PMS Premsyn PMS Medications that are stimulants available over the counter and prohibited only in competition are: • Epinephrine • Ephedrine • MicroNefrin (solution for inhalation) • Nephron (solution for inhalation) • S 2-(solution for inhalation) • Epinephrine mist (aerosol) • Primatene mist (aerosol) • Mini Two-Way Action tablets • Primatene tablets • Dynafed Asthma Relief tablets • Bronkaid Dual Action tablets • Ephedrine Sulfate (tablets/capsules) • Pretz-D nasal spray page 7 Contact Information WaterWings WaterWings is a monthly publication of the Northside Aquatics Teams NISD Natatorium 8400 N.
