Vivanco flier v4 26/07/2016 14:05 Page 1 DE PROFUNDIS Cambridge’s all-male early music vocal ensemble Sebastián deVivanco Missa pro defunctis conducted by BRUNO TURNER Saturday 17th September 7.30pm Jesus College Chapel By kind permission of the Master and Fellows Tickets £16 (low income £12) from bit.ly/VivancoDP or on the door Vivanco flier v4 26/07/2016 14:05 Page 2 Sebastián de Vivanco is one of the greatest composers of the Spanish Golden Age, but is also one of its most neglected. Scholars and performers are only now starting to appreciate Vivanco’s worth: he was born in Ávila at the same time as the great Tomás Luis de Victoria whose stunning brilliance unfairly monopolised the attention of the musical world. Educated in music by Bernardino de Ribera and Juan Navarro, Vivanco served as maestro de capilla at the cathedrals of Lérida, Segovia, Ávila and finally at Salamanca. He was appointed Professor of Music at Salamanca University and published his music in three lavish volumes. These show him to have been one of the superlative composers of his time. In this concert, the men of DE PROFUNDIS will perform Vivanco’s austerely beautiful 4-part Requiem (unheard since the 17th century), his Lamentations for Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday and some of his finest motets. BRUNO TURNER is a freelance choral director and musicologist who has dedicated his life to researching and publishing music from renaissance Spain. He directed the award-winning ensemble Pro Cantione Antiqua for many years, issuing a series of important recordings on the Archiv label. He is founding editor of Mapa Mundi Editions. This year he celebrates his 85th birthday and has chosen to mark it with this concert of music by a neglected Spanish master. Design by Beck Laxton: [email protected]
