Academic Regalia
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
and other contemporary institutions of higher
learning evolved historically from the great
medieval universities in Europe such as those
in Bologna, founded in 1088, Oxford in 1167,
and Cambridge in 1209.
Originally, the university was a guild of
Masters of Arts, and the degree was the token
that full membership had been attained. Even
as, after “serving his time,” an apprentice was
licensed to practice his trade or “master,” so
the Master of Arts was certified by his superiors
and admitted to the practice of instruction
and, therefore, the ceremony marking the
occasion was known as “Commencement.”
The term “Bachelor” originally designated
a man who was assistant to a small landowner
and in medieval times denoted the apprentice
as opposed to the master workman. It is
uncertain when the title of “Doctor” was
established as a degree superior to that
of “Master,” but at Bologna it was conferred
in Law in the twelfth century, and Paris
awarded the degree in Divinity about the same
time. There is mention of the “Doctors of the
different Faculties” at Oxford in 1184, so that
the term was evidently used as a title for those
possessing the highest degree of learning soon
after the establishment of the first universities.
At that time, everyone–men and women,
royalty and commoners–wore gowns; that is,
long, full-flowing robes, and the king himself
decreed what quality apparel might be worn by
whom. After about 1600 they were rarely worn
by men other than legal and official personages.
The hood first appeared as a separate
article of attire in the thirteenth century, but
by 1600 it, like the gown, ceased to be worn
at all except by legal, official, academic, and
clerical personages.
During the early years of the medieval
universities, scholars wore the same general
type of clothing as everyone else: gowns,
cloaks with hoods attached, or separate hoods
and caps. After a while, details of scholars’
apparel were prescribed by university statutes
to distinguish the faculties as well as the
different degrees of learning. When the
fashions of the people changed, scholars kept
the original styles both because they were
prescribed by university statutes and “because
it is honourable and in accordance with reason

that clerks to whom God has given an advantage
over the lay folk in their adornments within,
should likewise differ from the lay folk
outwardly in dress.”
In today’s academic procession, the regalia
not only contribute pageantry and color, but
denote the academic status of their wearers.
The cap, or mortarboard, is worn by all
academics upon occasion; but only those who
hold an academic degree wear the tassel to
their left, and only those who hold the
Doctor’s degree are permitted tassels of gold. Gowns are of three basic patterns: (a) the
Bachelor’s gown, of unadorned black and with
long pointed sleeves; (b) the Master’s gown,
unadorned blue but with an oblong sleeve,
open at the wrist, square cut with an arc cut
away; and (c) the Doctor’s gown, velvet-faced,
with bell-shaped sleeves and bars of velvet on
each sleeve.
Hoods are of three shapes and lengths, also
corresponding to the degree held by the
wearer. Their binding or trim is colored to
indicate the department or faculty to which
the degree pertains, while the lining is
decorated in the colors and arrangement
characteristic of the institution which awarded
the degree.
It should be noted that some institutions
depart to a lesser or greater degree from these
general rules in the design and execution of
their academic regalia.
The Chancellor’s Chain of Office
The Mace
The Chancellor’s Chain of Office, designed
and created by College of Visual and
Performing Arts faculty, reflects the rich
history of the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth as well as the current array of its
diverse Schools and Colleges. Visually inspired
by campus architect Paul Rudolph’s original
vision, the Chain of Office incorporates
modern contemporary lines echoing the
University’s commitment to the future.
The official University seal, the seals of the
University’s predecessor institutions, and
emblems of the eight existing Schools and
Colleges are represented in the medals
comprising the chain, which was created of
cast bronze and plated in 24-karat gold.
Professors Alan Burton Thompson and
Susan Hamlet of the Artisanry Department
combined cutting edge computer technology
and the oldest of technologies, the hand, to
create the chain, which was constructed of
more than 60 individual pieces. Full-time
Lecturer Charlotte Hamlin of the Textile
Design/Fiber Arts program fashioned the blue
velvet backing. Full-time Lecturer Reuben
Foat of Artisanry’s Furniture Design program
assisted in the production process.
The 3-D design software and printer used
to create the chain was recently purchased for
the College and is now being used to teach
digital fabrication classes to undergraduate
and graduate students.
The mace, once a terrible instrument of
medieval close combat, has come to symbolize
the power and authority of an appointed or
anointed leader. Many universities, eager to
engage in the medieval pageantry reflecting
the origins of our earliest universities,
have adapted the mace as a ceremonial staff
borne at the head of processions traditionally
marking the beginning of convocation
and commencement.

Celestino Macedo, and the late Special Assistant
to the President, Norman Zalkind LHD ’81.

culmination of years of hard work for students
who are receiving degrees.
The Students
During the Commencement, the name of each
graduate is read. The degrees are conferred
after all names have been read. Please do
not detract from the dignity of the ceremony
and the enjoyment of other participants and
their guests by leaving before the ceremony
is completed.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, students,
families, faculty, and friends of each college/
school are invited to gather for photographs
on the campus quad.

eyton R. “Randy” Helm was appointed interim chancellor of
UMass Dartmouth in January 2016. Before joining UMass
Dartmouth, Chancellor Helm led Muhlenberg College for
12 years and was named President Emeritus by the College’s trustees
at Commencement last May. Before his Muhlenberg presidency, Helm
served as vice president for college relations and professor of classical
studies at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and held leadership
positions in student affairs and development at the University of
Pennsylvania. At Muhlenberg, Helm presided over an era of growth and
transformation, during which applications and enrollment increased,
as the college continued to gain acclaim. Muhlenberg’s endowment more
than tripled–rising from $70 million to $247 million–with that growth
fueled by a $110 million capital campaign Helm oversaw.
Helm was also credited with improving campus facilities and
student life and developing a new curriculum. Muhlenberg also became more diverse during Helm’s
presidency. Helm led the college through a major campus expansion, which included construction of
a new sports center, science building, residence and dining halls, as well as the expansion and
renovation of the student center and performing arts facilities. Helm earned a reputation for being
highly visible on campus, being accessible to students, and for developing strong relationships with
the business community and with other civic leaders.
Helm earned his undergraduate degree in archaeology from Yale University and a doctorate
in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania.

s the outgoing president of the Student Government Association
(SGA), Tayla Vincent is ready to take the skills she learned in
leadership and continue to make impact after graduation.
During her time at UMass Dartmouth she participated in student
government, representing the Charlton College of Business, serving as
recording secretary and most recently as president. She helped implement
the first Shake the Ship Open Forum, which gave students a voice at their
university and in the changes they’d like to see. Vincent was also an
active member in Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society.
As a double major in accounting and management with a focus in
organizational leadership, Vincent was able to combine her interest in
accounting with a greater understanding about the decision-making
process of organizations and how they choose the best leadership
styles. After graduation, she plans to spend the summer traveling,
both in the U.S. and internationally.
Once she returns, Vincent will pursue a career at CPA firm Daniel Dennis & Company LLP and
then return to school for an MBA and to obtain her CPA license.

R
oslyn M. Brock made history in February 2010 when she was
unanimously elected as 14th Chairman of the National Board
of Directors for the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP). She is the youngest person and fourth
woman to hold this position. Brock is employed as Vice President,
Advocacy and Government Relations for Bon Secours Health System,
Inc., where she is the lead policy advocate on health care policy and
reform, population health, health equity and social justice legislative
and regulatory efforts. Prior to working at Bon Secours, Brock worked
10 years in health programs at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle
Creek, Michigan. She is an ordained Baptist preacher and serves as
Associate Minister at the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in
Alexandria, Virginia.
She has been a servant leader with the NAACP for more than 30
years and is a Diamond Life Member. In 2005, Brock created the NAACP Leadership 500 Summit.
The Summit’s goal is to recruit, train and retain a new generation of civil rights leaders to the NAACP.
Brock’s leadership skills have been recognized by several national publications and organizations. The
September 2010 issue of Essence magazine listed her among the 40 Fierce and Fabulous Women Who
Are Changing the World. Black Entertainment Television’s (BET) 2010 Black Girls Rock honored her
in its inaugural broadcast and she received the 2010 National Urban League’s Women of Power
Award. Brock is a member of the George Washington University Board of Trustees and Board of
Advisors Chair for the University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.
Bethany Phillips ’16 / Student Address
D
r. Brian Rothschild is the Montgomery Charter Professor of
Marine Science and founding Dean of UMass Dartmouth’s
School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). Prior to
joining UMass, he held professorships at the University of Maryland
and the University of Washington. He has had faculty or visiting
scientist affiliations with the University of Hawaii, Cornell University,
Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Rosensteil School of Marine and
Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, Institut fur Meereskunde,
University of Kiel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and
Harvard University. He has served as Senior Policy Advisor to the
Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA).
He managed NOAA’s implementation of the Fisheries
Conservation and Management Act of 1976. He has consulted for the
governments of the United Kingdom, Korea, Egypt, Peru, France, and the Republic of Ireland on
various aspects of oceanography and fishery management. His research has contributed to the
fundamental understanding of fish stock recruitment. In 2003, Dr. Rothschild received the American
Institute of Fishery Research Biologists Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2007 he received the
NOAA Sustainability Fisheries Leadership Award. In 2011, Dr. Rothschild received the Oscar Elton
Sette Award, which is given to an individual who has sustained excellence in marine fishery biology
through research, teaching, and administration. In 2012, Dr. Rothschild received the Man of the Year
Award from the Prince Henry Society of Massachusetts and the Highliner Lifetime Achievement
Award from National Fisherman magazine. He was appointed as the 2015 Hjort Scholar at the
Institute of Marine Research in Norway.

F
or Bethany Phillips, UMass Dartmouth has started a snowball
effect of goal attainment that will only continue after earning her
degree. Phillips is currently completing her 120-hour senior
mentorship in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Rhode Island
Hospital. She plans to work as a registered nurse in an intensive care
unit at either Rhode Island Hospital or in the Boston area. She hopes to
pursue a doctoral degree and become a nurse practitioner or a
physician’s assistant.
Phillips was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International
Nursing Honors Society, traveled to Haiti for experiential learning
opportunities in Community Health, and completed her honors thesis
on recognizing stroke symptoms and risk factors in the community.
She became interested in nursing in high school when she won an
award for achievements in an anatomy and physiology class. Her love
for older adults sparked her interest in studying aging and health. With the “baby boom” generation
reaching the age of 65, Phillips wants to be part of the community of healthcare workers and
institutions crafting policies and strategies to meet their rising demands.

R
obert Pinsky served an unprecedented three terms as the
nation’s official poet. His Selected Poems was published in
2011. His previous books of poetry include Gulf Music, Jersey
Rain, The Want Bone and The Figured Wheel: New and Collected
Poems 1966-1996. His best-selling translation The Inferno of Dante
was a Book-of-the-Month-Club Editor’s Choice, and received both the
Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Harold Morton Landon
Translation Award. His prose books include The Life of David, The
Situation of Poetry and The Sounds of Poetry. The CD PoemJazz, with
Grammy-winning pianist Laurence Hobgood, is released by
Circumstantial Productions.
Pinsky has also performed reading poems with Ben Allison, Bobby
Bradford, Vijay Iyer, Mike Manieri, Stan Strickland and other jazz
musicians. Among his awards and honors are the William Carlos
Williams Prize, the Harold Washington Award from the City of Chicago, the Italian Premio Capri, the
PEN-Volcker Award and the Korean Manhae Prize. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement
Award from the PEN American Center. While serving as U.S. Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky founded
The Favorite Poem Project, including the videos that can be seen at www.favoritepoem.org.
Robert Pinsky was born and raised in Long Branch, New Jersey. He graduated from Long Branch
High School, as had his parents, and went on to college at Rutgers University and then to graduate
work at Stanford University, where he held a Stegner Fellowship.

lizabeth Janson is committed to transforming public education
and providing youth with the resources they need. She chose to
pursue a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy
Studies because of the program’s focus on social justice, including
educational problems and how those problems are caused by policies
outside of education.
Janson has been blessed with many opportunities to present at
both local and international conferences including one of the biggest
education conferences in the world, American Educational Research
Association (AERA), as well as at AAACS, NEERO, CIES NorthEast,
and TRED, the Transformative Researchers and Educators for
Democracy Conference here at UMassD. Janson has had her work
published both in academic journals and books, and is a contributing
author to several forthcoming books.
Janson has been the president of the Educational Leadership and Policy Graduate Students
Association since 2012 and for the past two years served as a Graduate Student Senator. After
graduation, she plans on using her doctorate to keep fighting to transform public education and work
at the local, national, and international levels.
