ROCKY POINT MIDDLE SCHOOL
Tim Green told us about his life. He went from playing
football to writing popular young adult fiction novels.
Students and staff at Rocky Point Middle School were all honored by the visit
of author Tim Green. Mr. Green was funny and entertaining as he shared with us
how he followed his dreams of playing for the NFL and becoming a writer.
“Weightlifting for your brain,” was Mr. Green’s catchphrase that seemed to
resonate with the students in the school.
Some of Mr. Green’s popular young adult novels include Unstoppable and
Football Genius, as well as many other novels. Along with his many young adult
novels, he has also written plenty of non-fiction and suspense adult novels.
Tim Green started off studying at Syracuse University where he became a
football player. He was drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Falcons. While
Mr. Green was playing football, he also studied law and began a writing career.
He described his dedication to fulfilling his dreams as “maniacal.” When Mr.
Green retired from the NFL he had already written a book and had become a
successful lawyer. In addition to all of these accomplishments, he was the host
of numerous shows that include FOX NFL Sunday, BattleBots, and most
recently Find My Family. Tim Green has visited nearly 700 schools and spoken
to more than 400,000 students.
Tim Green has inspired many students to follow their dreams and work hard.
Whether it’s a writer, or an athlete, he inspired many of us.

aptitude test to figure out which faction they will be a part of.
Beatrice Prior just turned sixteen. She was a part of Abnegation and thought she

2013 SUMMER MOVIE REVIEW: Iron Man 3
Review by: Victor Acosta
Tony Stark faced death at the hands of terrorists when shrapnel got in his heart and he had to get
an electromagnet embedded in his chest. What else is going to endanger Tony Stark’s (Iron Man)
life?
Answer: A classic Iron Man villain called… The Mandarin! Tony is suffering from panic attacks and
has built multiple Iron Man suits designed for space, underwater, stealth, and heavy battle.
Bombings caused Tony to threaten The Mandarin on television. As a result, the Mandarin retaliates
by launching a missile assault on Tony’s mansion. Leaving, Tony presumed dead, Dummy (the
robot arm from the first two films) underwater, and the destruction of the original 7 Iron Man suits.
Tony then ends up in Tennessee, where he was going to investigate the bombings. Tony meets a
boy named Harley, who helps him fix the Mark 42 Armor. Tony learns that the bombings are actually
a cover up for an experimental medical cure called Extremis developed by Aldrich Killian, that
caused early test subjects to BLOW UP. Pepper then gets kidnapped by Killian. What will happen
next?! Well, I’m not going to tell you, because if I did, I would ruin a really cool movie. :)
Rating: PG-13 Running Time: 130 minutes Notes: Has been released to DVD
My grade: A-; the minus is for the destruction of ALL the Iron Man suits.
41st American Music Awards
Article by: Kayla Rennee
Remember that feeling when you hear your favorite artist’s name
called because they just won Artist of the Year award? Did you
have that feeling at this year’s “American Music Awards”? This
year the AMA`s was held at the Nokia Theatre in L.A live on
November, 24, 2013. The show was broadcasted live on ABC and
CTV. This year’s show was hosted by Pitbull. Congratulations to all
the winners and nominees, specifically Taylor Swift who won the
most awards that night and Rihanna who won the first ever Iconic
Artist award. The show had many touching and jaw-dropping
moments like the special moment with Rihanna and her mom.
Miley Cyrus’ performance with an animated kitten and the
performances of Lady GaGa and R.Kelly were something to
remember.

Rocky Point Radical Robotix Takes Home FLL
Practice Tournament
Article by: Kyle Markland
It's December, that “magical” time of year!!! For most of us, that means the
holiday season, but for those who participate in FIRST LEGO League, it's the
start of a different season; the Robotics season. And what better way to start
the season off than with a phenomenal performance by none other than the
current Long Island FLL Champions and Rocky Point's own, Radical Robotix and
the Robo Eagles!!!
Let's cover some details before I begin to describe the tournament. First off, just like last year, we call ourselves “Radical Robotix,” but
after a major team revamp, many newcomers were added to the teams to complement the remaining two veterans. Radical Robotix
consists of many great players; Sal Aprile, Preston Nichols, Justin Monaghan, Shane Monaghan, Sean Vroom, Thomas Hernandez,
Matthew Quinn, Clayton MacKay, Ben Bogart, James Alexander, Aidan Donaruma, Thomas Sandusky and myself. Also, we had so
many newcomers that we decided to form a second RP team; the Rocky Point Robo Eagles. The Robo Eagles are consisted entirely of
“rookies;” they are Julius Condemi, Cole Swensen, Rex Alex, Eric Janus, Aidan Vu and John Sobczak. I'll tell you how both teams did
later on, but I couldn't witness all of the Robo Eagles' rounds, so I can only go into detail with Radical Robotix. In this tournament,
because it's the first, the only aspects are Gracious Professionalism (good sportsmanship) and the Robot Game, where a team's robot
must perform missions on an obstacle course and score points. Only the team's highest score counts. This season's theme is Nature's
Fury, so the missions were all modeled after the aftermath of a natural disaster.
There was a total of four robot rounds. First up was Sal and yours truly. At the end of the match, we scored 219 points,
rocketing our team to first with a 70 point lead. Afterward, a couple of boys from another team came to us and asked us for an extra
wheel. We promptly gave them one and they walked away thankfully. When the second round began, Preston and Justin were up on
the table. They did a good job, but a few robot malfunctions stacked upon each other, hurting their score and dropping it to about 56.
It's alright, guys; it wasn't your fault! Right before the third round, the competition was becoming more intense. Another team had
achieved higher scores than our 219, displacing us to second. It was time for Sean, Matthew and Ben to make their move. After the
points were tabulated, they had scored a lofty 265 points, securing our place in second. With the last round approaching, we decided
to address the issue of the robot getting stuck on the Earthquake platform. With a few deft programming tweaks made by Preston and
I, we were able to fix the problem just in time. While we worked, another team had asked us about how our robot traversed the
Climbing Obstacles. After thoroughly explaining our technology, they seemed quite amazed at our innovative solution that no one else
had thought to employ. In the final round, Shane, Thomas and Clayton stepped up to the competition table. The programming
modifications worked perfectly, and the robot didn't crash again. They did a great job and achieved a respectable score of 232 points.
Throughout the tournament, we had oodles of fun and by the time the Closing Ceremonies rolled around, Radical Robotix
had safely secured second place out of thirty with our top score of 265 in the Robot Game, and the Robo Eagles place fifth out of
thirty with 169 points. There was a total of four awards being given out; two for the top two finishes in the Robot Game, and two for
the two teams who most exhibited Gracious Professionalism, or good sportsmanship. We knew we were getting a second place Robot
award, but what happened next was completely unexpected. As it turns out, the boys we gave a wheel to and the team who inquired
about our robot were grateful for our help. They and many other teams had put votes in for us to earn the Gracious Professionalism
award. The results were astonishing; we were voted to earn the 1 Place Gracious Professionalism award by so many other teams,
that we actually won it with five times more votes than any other single team! With these two awards, we have clearly scored a 1
place overall victory!!! If there was a Champion's award, you can bet it would've had “Radical Robotix” written all over it!!! Don't
forget the Robo Eagles, though! They did an amazing job in the tournament at fifth place, especially because it was their first time at
an FLL tournament for all of their members, and they had very little help from the experienced veterans!!!

At the end of the competition, Radical Robotix took home two awards, which is half of all the ones being given out, and the
Robo Eagles did an awesome job in fifth at their first tournament! I would again like to congratulate all of the Radical Robotix and
Robo Eagles team members on accomplishing this amazing feat.
