MIS Messenger Reunion Special 2016
Spring 2016 Communications for Mary Immaculate School Alumni and Faculty ALL CLASS REUNION SPECIAL EDITION PASS THE WORD TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY! Our alumni database has not grown as quickly as we would like, so there is a chance your friends and family are not in it! So forward this newsletter to them to make sure they don’t miss out on the All-Class Reunion Weekend! Our class agents (see page 2 of this newsletter) have been working to build our alumni database as no class lists exist prior to the 1990s. If you would like to help build a list of your grad class, please send an email to alumni@ mischool.org. Alumni and friends of MIS can sign up to receive future mailings at http:// www.mischool.org/pages/Alumni_ Signup. Mary Immaculate Catholic School is excited to host an All-Class Reunion Weekend! All alumni, alumni parents and former teachers are invited to be a part of this exciting opportunity to reconnect, revisit memories, and celebrate the wonderful changes that have occurred over the years to the Mary Immaculate School campus! Our last All-Class Reunion Weekend took place back in 2002—and it is likely that it may be another decade before another one takes place—so don’t miss out! Here are the activities planned for the March 18-19, 2016 All-Class Reunion weekend: Friday, Mar. 18: Happy Hours for individual grad classes will be held at various locations around North Dallas, organized by class representatives. A listing of known class agents can be found at www.mischool.org/pages/Alumni_Class_Agents. If you would like to organize the one for your class, please email [email protected]. Details at www.mischool.org/ pages/Events_Reunions. Saturday, Mar. 19: Open house of the MIS Campus will be held from 8:30am to 10:30am. View the many improvements that have taken place on our campus, including the recently renovated library, our St. Ann Science Lab and Art Center, and the former church sanctuary—now a full-sized gym. Saturday, Mar. 19: The BIG EVENT! The Heart of Gold Auction Dinner and All-Class Reunion will be held at the Gaylord Texan Hotel, hosted by honorary chairs/alumni parents Jon and Sue Grady. A live auction with alumni dad auctioneer, Dean McCurry, a silent auction with over 300 items, and dancing to the Scott Dean band, led by Scott Dean McCurry ’98 will be featured at the dinner. The theme is “Denim and Diamonds: Coming Home Texas Style” so you can come country or dress up...your choice! Get your tickets for $85/person for the dinner auction at www.misauction.org. Class of ‘96 What’s Happening When? Friday, March 19: Walkthrough of the School Campus Have you wondered what a church looks like when it is no longer a church? Our more senior alum and parents can enjoy this chance to check out our full size gymnasium, complete with stained glass windows from the former sanctuary! Less senior alum and parents will love the handpainted mural in our refurbished library! The school has come along way from temporary buildings and we’d love for you to see the improvements at the MIS campus walkthrough from 8:30am to 10:30am on Friday, March 19, 2016. Various teachers from past eras will also be with us to greet you! Facilities Changes Over the Years September 1959: The school initially consisted of three “temporary” buildings. As the school grew, multiple buildings were added to accommodate growth. 1960s: Two additional temporary buildings were constructed prior to the summer, for a total of ten classrooms. Two additional buildings were added in September 1960. May 1962 brought the first four permanent classrooms. In February 1964, the new and much larger chapel-auditorium (now the school gym) was completed. 1980s: By 1984, MIS had 20 permanent classrooms, including a small computer lab with Apple computers. In 1986, the Parish Hall was built to serve as a gym, cafeteria, and social center. 2000s: In April 2006 the new sanctuary and church offices opened. By August 2006 the old sanctuary and church offices were converted into a gymnasium, art room and school offices; and the Parish Hall was also renovated and updated. 2010s: In December 2010, interactive white boards took the place of blackboards. 2012 brought renovation of the art room into a dual purpose art room and science center. 2013 focused on security improvements for the school, including a remodeled front entry with camera security system. The library was remodeled in 2014, with a hand-painted Texas landscape mural highlighting one wall. A 2015 upgrade to the Computer Lab with 32 all-in-one touch screen Windowsbased computers. 3 What’s Happening When? All non-budgeted proceeds from fund-raising/development efforts this year and next will be put towards facilities improvements. Top priority goes to the junior high building, where poor insulation, old single-paned windows, substandard roofing and an antiquated boiler-system causes uncomfortable classroom conditions for the students and higher energy costs for the parish. During the colder winter days, teachers use personal heaters and students are allowed to wear coats and mittens to compensate for uncomfortable temperatures. Improvements to this four-classroom building through this project would include an energy efficient roof, energy efficient windows, energy efficient storefronts, movement away from current boiler system and old AC units to energy efficient HVAC rooftop systems, and floor and ceiling repairs to the hallway. Current city codes will require us to complete energy-efficient upgrades to both the classroom areas and the attached hallway area at the same time, so we will not be able to divide this into separate smaller projects. Costs for the improvements to the Jr. High wing are estimated to be upwards of $350,000. BE An active PART OF creating A GREAT FUTURE FOR MIS!
