Hi fellow members,
This has been one exciting month!
The Bremerton
cruise resulted in 18 boats attending. There were 17
boats attending the famous Minto Mingle at Dockton in
the pouring rain no less! Tom had 17 boats registered
for the summer series which has to be a record! So far
six of our club boats are heading to Desolation Sound together in July and so
far at least five boats have signed up for the Fourth of July event. This is
participation at its best, folks, and it doesn’t even include all those that
attended the monthly dinner and the wonderful club members that
participated in Beds for Boats.
Thanks to the hard work by Jeanne Walker and others, the Beds for Boats
event held last Saturday was a wonderful, fun event for all those that
participated by bidding for space on nine of our yacht club boats. Those
boats donated for the event were Mark Rider on Flashback, Shelley Conti on
Chinook, Tom and Jeanne Spohn on Andromeda, Jerry Stevenson on Margo,
Don and Kristi Brame on Sir Rowdy, Debra and Ray Valpey on Sloe Tango,
Tom Hubbard on Tiburon, George and Daphne Thompson on Tracer and Sue
and I on Liberté. The race and wonderful salmon and steak dinner were a
fund raiser for Hospitality House.
The Minto Mingle, for some of us old guys, was a trip to the past. It
reminded me of the fun races we had in the club 30-40 years ago when
everyone had a Minto or El Toro and towed them to our various cruises.
Yes, Peter won again and certainly deserves it. However, everyone who
raced had just as much fun as he did. Thanks to Davy Jones for putting on a
great event again!
George and Daphne Thompson put on a wonderful social event at their
home for those interested in going to Desolation Sound together this year.
Sue and I can’t make it as we have signed up for a trip to Alaska in early
August. However six boats have signed up so far and it looks like a fun trip.
Give George or Daphne a call if you want further details. (Outline of
projected trip on page 6.)
Our youth sailing committee, in cooperation with the City of Des Moines and
the Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron is well on their way towards
teaching sailing this summer! I am excited! The four used Lido’s from the

Fall Series Race 4 & 5
I think we have so far eight members from our club that have volunteered to
teach in August. We can run up to 48 kids in the program this year.
The MidSound Summer Social starts Thursday, July 8th. This is another great fun raiser for Hospitality House as
well as collecting food for the food bank. David Garman and his team are well on their way towards another
successful, fun series this summer. However, they could use some help! Please contact David and offer to help as
race committee, set up, tear down help, helping with food serving, and helping with food collection. Also, please
put this six week event on your calendar and come out and join us. You won’t believe how much fun this is! Details

Sue and I recently invited Ken and Sue Wilson, as well as Guy and Pam Harper to dinner at our home. What an
exciting and entertaining evening listening to tales from the old days when our yacht club first was formed! These
are wonderful people to engage in conversation. If you ever get the chance, spend some time with them. You will
be amply rewarded! Sue has attached several photos of Discovery, the Harper’s yacht as well as their immaculate
Minto. We hope to see it at the Minto Mingle next year! (See page 10 for photos.)

IN MEMORY OF: RICH ROBINSON
“Richard C. ROBINSON Seattle Attorney Richard Robinson passed away in the early
morning of June 25. He was a devoted husband to his wife Chris, and loving father to
Phillip, 11, and Renee, 9. Born 12/31/1952 in Yakima, he graduated as valedictorian
from Pasco HS in 1971, and Gonzaga Law School in 1978. In a law career of more than
30 years, Rich worked as a city attorney for independent counsel and most recently as
a partner at Layman, Layman and Robinson. Rich had a unique ability to be sensitive
to his client's needs. In life, Rich's intentions were to always to do his best. Whether it
was in the courtroom, the golf course, sailing, waterskiing or relating to his family or
friends, he always strived to do it right. He was proud of his affiliations with Fairwood
Golf and Country Club, Gonzaga University, and his many friends and colleagues. In
addition to his wife and children, Rich is survived by mom Mary, 7 brothers and
sisters, countless nieces and nephews, the Abernathy family and was preceded in death by his father Al Robinson
and mother Barb. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donation be made in Rich's name to Wellspring Family Services
at www.wellspringfs.org. There will be a celebration of Rich's life Wednesday, June 30th at 3:00pm Fairwood Golf
and Country Club 17070 140th Avenue Southeast Renton, WA 98058 There will be a viewing on Tuesday, June

A VERY SUCCESSFUL BOATS FOR BEDS

spot on your boat. There are many happy sailors! And most are ready to
purchase a spot at the next auction in the spring.
Boats for Beds: Providing Shelter, Experiencing Wonder, Having a Blast
In March, nine captains donated their boats and their time to raise money for
Hospitality House Women’s Shelter. Fifty-five seats were sold, raising more
than $3000 which go toward operating expenses for our women’s shelter in Burien.
June 25th was a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day. The sails unfurled and the Des Moines Marina was alive with
activity. The captains, their crew, the guests and volunteers all converged that morning.

The guests discovered what the Hospitality House board and you have known for some time: Three Tree Point
Yacht Club is a warm, fun and welcoming group. You open your boats, as others open their homes, to share your
world and your hospitality with others.
They saw the Sound, Mount Rainier and the shore from a beautiful vantage point aboard the boats and they
discovered an experience that is both refreshing and relaxing.
One boat refused to let the captain turn on the motor, preferring the 2 knot current.
There were the children with wide eyes in bright life vests who couldn’t believe where they were.
There were guests who were equally wide-eyed when they saw the low tide ramp when they first arrived… later
they glowed with sun and smiles from the day they had experienced.
There were three boats’ guests promising to do it again...
There was the surprise of a delicious dinner. This wasn’t a surprise to anyone who knew Jeanne Walker and her
volunteers… wine, tea, appetizers, fresh spinach salad, grilled salmon (3 kings) and 8 flank steaks, fresh strawberry
shortcake…….
There was Joe Jewell and the Des Moines Marina staff moving tables, chairs and boxes of food down the ramps and
helping set up.
We can’t thank enough the captains and crews of Eagle, Andromeda, Chinook, Flashback, Liberté, Margo, Sir
Rowdy, Sloe Tango, Tiburon, and Tracer. To that, we add thanks to the staff of the Des Moines Marina and our meal
providers: Jeanne Walker and Pinnacle Massage Therapy, Collins Chiropractic, TTPYC and friends of Hospitality
House Thank you all very much.
The Women of Hospitality House enter our shelter to find home, health and hope. Those services are only possible
through the support and generosity of communities like the TTPYC. One of several helpers at Boats for Beds was a
HH resident and she told me, “Today I am a volunteer”. Thank you again, for the hope and spirit that came alive, the
success that was achieved, and the community that you shared.

SEPTEMBER BUSINESS MEETING IS TUESDAY THE 14TH
Mark your calendars for the annual fall business meeting. The time will match our “Second Tuesday of the Month
Dinner Meeting” routine. The location is to be determined (but might be the Mandarin Kitchen, same as the other
meetings). Details to follow in the Sept. Barnacle.
The MidSound Summer Social We know that summer is here when the
MID SOUND SUMMER SOCIAL is set to start. The first evening is this coming
Thursday, JULY 8th. The sailing social will run for six consecutive Thursdays.
Each evening has an ON-THE-WATER theme, and a DOCK-THEME. The theme
for July 8th is, Happy Birthday USA. Each boat needs to coordinate and dress
entirely in RED or WHITE or BLUE, and fly an American flag from the boat
when finishing. A special prize will be awarded for the boat that does the best
at getting all in one color. For those crews who have trouble even matching
socks (or wearing them), at least have each person wear all RED, WHITE, or
BLUE shirt. We have a special activity for everyone at the dock. If you are not in uniform, you will not be able to

participate. Each week, look on the web at http://www.ttpyc.org/MidSoundSocial.html for the on-the-water and
the dock-theme. Make sure to look ahead a few weeks, and get your crew, boat and props ready. It will just be
more fun if everyone gets into the theme for the night. Each boat must complete a registration form, and must
complete the nightly course before being entered in the prize drawings. You will find an entry form on the
www.ttpyc.org , and instructions are attached to this newsletter. Stop by the fuel dock to turn in your registration,
please turn in the form prior to racing so we know the diner count. The MSSS Committee has secured many
valuable prizes for the raffle including thousands of dollars worth of prizes and certificates. You can’t win if you
don’t come register, go sailing, and finish. We have 10 major sponsors who provide catering or money to support
the event with food, fun, and prizes. When you get the chance to thank them at the dock or at their business, do so,
let them know that you are from TTPYC, and you appreciate their donation. The best way is to thank them by
buying their services. The major donors are: North Sails, Dives Dive Service, Ullman Sails, Emerald Cove Catering,
B & E Meats, Doyle Sails, Cox Financial, Des Moines Marina, Carla Boutwell and last but not least our Power
Squadron Major sponsor Burien City Garage. A representative of the Poverty Bay Power Squadron will be at least
at the August 5th event, so make sure to come that night and get all the information on that organization, they may
just have some education opportunities that you need, like safe docking, boat handling or navigation.
The MSSS is a fundraiser. That means that each skipper needs to inform and encourage each crewmember or
guest on their boat to bring several food items suitable for the food bank, and to donate to the Hospitality House. If
you don’t want to donate at the event, it is possible to donate on-line and still get credit to your boat. Ask the
Hospitality House representatives how to do that. A significant prize will be awarded to the skipper of the boat
that raises the most money during the 6 week event. If you don’t let your crew know, they may not be prepared to
donate to the level that befits the elegant yacht to which they are crewmembers. Make sure to invite people to
come out with you each night, introduce them to our club, and get a donation from them.

Bremerton Memorial Day Cruise- With the exception of the cold, wind and rain, the
cruise to Bremerton for the Harbor Days Festival was a lot of fun. The highlight of
the event for TTPYC members was the champagne birthday party, hosted by Betty
Haines, celebrating her 90th birthday. The effortless manner in which Betty
extinguished the 90 candles reflects that experience matters.
The Festival's entertainment was continuous throughout the weekend, no less than
five historic schooners and the Virginia V provided tours, and a classic car show and
a historic military vehicle show stirred memories. The not-so-easy photo scavenger hunt devised by Ray and
Debra Valpey was won by TTPYC guests Ken and Julie Dausman (Kia Ora) with an incredible 18 out of 20 correct
identifications, followed by our own Sue and Pat Waters with 17 correct identifications, and the Gelinas family won
third place.
Most of the TTPYC members were able to attend a Sunday night dinner at Anthony’s and members (who were
awake early enough) had warm pastries delivered to their boat for breakfast. Hosted by George and Daphne
(Tracer) this cruise was attended by 18 TTPYC and guest boats: Brigadoon, Tracer, Hobbes, Allez!, A tout a
l'heure, Sloe Tango, Liberté, Cheers, Fast Feather, Prime Meridian, Sanguinity, Tiburon, Beverly Jane, Sir Rowdy,
Sweet Surrender, Andromeda, Blue Moon, Kia Ora.
Gig Harbor Maritime Days Cruise-Hosted by Paul and Carol Jones (Brigadoon) this cruise offered members the
opportunity to explore another maritime community's summer festival. Eight TTPYC boats remained conveniently
rafted overnight in the center of Gig Harbor as members enjoyed the shore side exhibits, vendors, and food booths,
and occasional rain. Brigadoon was accompanied by Blue Moon, Tracer, Sloe Tango, Hobbes, Prime Meridian,
Sweet Surrender, and Tiburon.
Minto Mingle-Dockton Cruise-Co-hosted by David and Marilyn Jones (race) and George
Thompson (social) the annual Minto Mingle on June 19-20 lived up to its reputation for
racing excellence and overall fun, notwithstanding the occasional rain showers.
Following the gourmet pot-luck dinner on Saturday night, the wine-tasting event
established that price does not always dictate quality, at least to TTPYC members. While
a fine vintage white wine submitted by David and Marilyn Jones was rated as #1, the
$2.80/liter box Cabernet Sauvignon by Carlo Rossi was mid-rated in the blind test by
TTPYC members, proving that economies of scale can provide outstanding value. This
was the same box that was served at the Bremerton cruise, and the Gig Harbor cruise, so perhaps familiarity
influenced the result. Participating in this event were: Asylum, Tiburon, Sloe Tango, Liberté, Tracer, Brigadoon,
Sweet Surrender, Flashdance, Cayuse, Sir Rowdy, Andromeda, Hobbes, Blue Moon, Eagle and Sweet Chance. Jeanne
brought the wonderful cantaloupes that we had for breakfast.
Fourth of July Cruise- Watch the City of Des Moines fireworks display from the safety of Tramp Harbor. This
traditional TTPYC one-evening cruise will be hosted by Tom and Jean Spohn-see their flyer for more details.
CRUISE BOAT OF THE YEAR
Ever wonder how the "Cruise Boat of the Year" is selected? Surprisingly, there actually is an objective criterion to
determine which boat is awarded this honor. Through a system apparently adopted by the TTPYC in 2006, the
award is determined by the number of "points" accumulated in accordance with the following:
1. A boat earns two points for every TTPYC cruise event attended.
2. A boat can also earn points at the rate of .01 point per nautical mile for cruising to places or events, other than
TTPYC cruises. Racing does not count, but taking the boat to a race event would allow the miles enroute to be
counted.

2010 MINTO MINGLE
Only 7 Mintos showed up for the 2010 minto mingle but that didn't dampen the spirit of the racers as the
competition was fierce. When Asylum showed up early Friday as the race committee, there was already a minto
out, fine tuning his racing machine. As I approached the marina and slowed the GPS SOG to 2.2 knots, this minto
went flying by.
I was always under the impression that Reynolds said a 9 ft. boat couldn't do that, but what do I know. Two more
Mintos joined Mike Ellis for good practice in about 11 knots of wind Friday night. The weather was fantastic at this
point. Pat Waters pulled his new secret weapon; a new super sized see through sail, out of the bag and joined Mike
Ellis and David L. Jones out on the waters. This was David’s first time ever sailing a boat and he was having a blast.
The volunteers finally got the course set by about noon Saturday after hiding from a downpour all morning. It was
decided to get the races off between rain squalls if at all possible and at the end of the day, 4 races were conducted.
At this point, the point difference between 1st and second place was zero. Mike Ellis had 2 firsts and 2 seconds as
well as Pete Gelinas. One race was held in about the lightest rain that fell all day on Sunday. This was a long 3 lap
race with the requirement that all boats pass through the start finish line on the upwind leg in the event that the
wind might collapse from its 4 to 5 knot blow. Many a pleading eye looked toward the committee as they
completed the laps but what the heck, I was sitting in a nice chair with an umbrella quite enjoying the racing so all
laps were completed. Peter Gelinas won line honors with showing everybody what you can get out of a minto. Mike
Ellis took second place, Gene Ellison 3rd, Pat Waters 4th, Tom Brown 5th, Jeff Hart 6th, and David L. Jones 7th.
I would like to mention that Jeff Hart has never raced his R.P. minto before and kept his boat right in the mix. A
special mention must be made of David L. as the first person to ever fall out of a Minto while racing and not getting
any water in the boat.
A special thanks to Paul and Carol Jones, Who every year manage to gather up the race buoys, bull horns, and
signal horn and get them to Dockton. Paul also manages to get his Dinghy out and pick up all the floating bodies of
the racers who manage to get themselves parted from their boats somehow.

A few boats are going up earlier, but will probably meet in Port Townsend. Asylum is going to leave a day or two
later and may catch up with the rest in Desolation Sound.
7/24 Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend –- call (360) 385-2828 to make reservations; raft on long dock if
none available. Groceries: If you’re there on Saturday morning, there’s a farmer’s market up the hill. You can take a
bus or walk to the Safeway if you need a regular grocery store. You can stock up on fudge at The Elevated candy
store.
7/25 Deer Harbor – some will dock, some will anchor/raft good place to buy fuel
7/26 Check in with customs in Bedwell Harbour, continue on to Ganges if want to stop there (good bakery, large
grocery, hardware store) or Montague Harbor (possibly go to Pub for dinner)
7/27 Go through Dodd Narrows at slack (11:30 a.m.). Stay in Nanaimo City Marina,
anchored out behind Newcastle Island, or at government dock - Can take on water at the
fuel dock Pump out station didn’t work last summer

604.485.5244 You can walk up a hill to a grocery store – may need a cart if you buy heavy stuff. Good restaurant
called the Alchemist within walking distance.
7/30 Grace Harbour in Desolation Sound Possibly go to Laughing Oyster Restaurant at end of Okeover Arm for
dinner. They do not have a boat that picks people up at Grace Harbour, but say that it’s only about a 10-15 minute
dinghy ride with a 9.9 hp engine. David, the chef and owner, is willing to do a special dinner for us or we can order
a la carte. Bistro items range from $14 to $20, regular dinner entrees are around $25, and he can do a package

Well we’ve got some catchin’ up to do.
Swiftsure is the biggest sailing event in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a race with many faces and this year was no
exception. The race started with fifteen knot winds and built to thirty-five knots with rough seas. The winds
diminished later in the race and switched from a southwesterly to a northeasterly making for a beat both ways for
the long and middle length courses. In the forty Swiftsure Races that our skipper, Doug Fryer has done, this is the
first that he had to go to weather the entire race.
Three of our Three Tree Points boats went up to Swiftsure this year, Gordon Kells- Murphy’s Les Cheveau Blancs,
Pat Stewart’s Cherokee and David Garman’s Giant Slayer and three of our members sailed with Doug Fryer on his
classic wooden cutter, Night Runner. These boats represented us well. Cherokee won their class for the seventh
time missing being the overall Cape Flattery Race winner by a mere fifty-one seconds. Giant Slayer took third place
in the short course Juan de Fuca Race and those of us who sailed on Knight Runner were relatively pleased with a
third in class in the long course Swiftsure Classic. Les Chevaux Blancs unfortunately had an injury fairly early in the
race and had to retire. I’m happy to report everyone is doing fine.
Congratulations to Pat and David- It was a real test to your skills and perseverance, Swiftsure 2010!

Pat Stewart received his trophy for first in class
in the Cape Flattery Race. There were chants of
“give it to him”, “give it to him” from the crowd,
meaning that Pat has won his class so many
times that Royal Victoria Yacht Club should
retire the trophy and let Pat keep it. That was
for win number six and now he has won seven.
I talked with Pat when he returned from
Victoria and he said that was his last Swiftsure.
He said the body was getting a little tired. It is
only fitting that he would retire with a win. His
record is going to be a tough one to beat.
Congratulations to all of our competitors. You
represent our club well.
This year, Friday prior to the race, awards for
last year’s race were awarded at the event tent
so everyone could attend. I was pleased to be
there and watch David Garman, Debra Lowell
and crew received their beautiful trophies for
first in class and first overall for the 2009 Juan
de Fuca Race.
Summer Series concluded on June 24th. The wind was pretty typical for a Summer
Series but the weather was unseasonably cold. I’ve got to hand it to Paul Jones, Phil
Chin and their crew of many, regardless of the temperature, they put together a
great series by getting seventeen boats out on the water and adding some real spice
to the event with pirate night on the forth race. It is pretty exciting starting and
finishing to canon fire.
There was a well attended party after the series with a burger barbecue and a
barbecue cook off by the Cruising Class.
Congratulations to the winners. Pat Waters and crew on Liberté were first in PHRF
A Class, Gordon Kells-Murphy and crew on Les Chevaux Blancs were first in PHRF B
Class and Steve Foss and crew on Susurra were first in the well attended Cruising
Class.

Upcoming Events: Next on the schedule is the Mid- Sound Social. This has become our premier summer event. I
really encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this great event and support our charities.
The Double Handed Race is scheduled for Saturday, July 17th. We’ve changed the format a bit this year. As you can
see, the name has change from “Couples” Race to “Double” Handed Race. So now one of your crew no longer has to
wear a skirt. I know this was keeping a few of you macho guys from participating. We will have a flying sail class, a

no flying sail class and awards for the best Jack and Jill performance. I encourage
everyone to come out. It should be much easier to get crew and there will be a fun
party and awards after the event. Sign up early so we can make our plans.

The Mid-Sound Summer Social in July and August will give us one of our best opportunities to attract new
members. Each race there will be a membership table set up near the guest docks, so anyone who is not racing and
would like to help with table, please call Don or Kristie at 206-212-6762.
Remember, the best way to attract new members is through your conversations with other boaters. Offer them a
membership card or give them our website. If you need more cards, just let us know as we will be happy to get
them for you. Thanks for your help in getting the word out about our great club!
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Youth Sailing Program
The Des Moines Marina has 4 Lidos sitting in their yard. We are working on getting instructors certified to teach
from the Poverty Bay Sail and Power squadron as we speak and we are also working on a class outline for the kids.
Joe Dusenbury set up one of the Lidos at the Saturday market (in the rain) and got 8 kids already signed up. The
flyers should be out this week, which you can get through the Des Moines Parks department.

IN AND AROUND YOUR COMMUNITY
Hi folks,
The Sound Rowers event is nearly on us. We will rendezvous the afternoon/evening of Friday July 9 at Port
Orchard Marina with the folks from Bremerton and have our safety and organization meeting. It sounds like they
may only be able to field one boat this year so we will need to take up the slack. That means we could use 6 or 7
boats from Poverty Bay and/or Three Tree Point Yacht Club.
Saturday 7/10 we head out to Manchester State Park in order to be there well before the race start at 10:00. You
