Younger Generation
Boat Building Interest Beginning Early
Meet Hendrix Mathews, our youngest
boat builder. He used scraps from other
Farley boats to build his own creation.
As his mother, Katherine, says, “it
may not float, but that is a minor detail
in the big picture”.
Katherine is a PAPHA Board Member
and an active member of its Fundraising Committee. Jared Mathews, father
of Hendrix, is Port Aransas Parks and
Recreation Grounds Supervisor.

Museum Director’s Report
The new Fundraising Committee,
Katherine Mathews, Susan Sheehan,
Cameron Pratt, and Richard Schroer,
met for the first time on June 29. The
first act of the newly formed committee was to thank Nancy Donley and
Jane Gnazzo for their years of hard and
productive work raising money for our
museum. Both Jane and Nancy have
graciously offered to remain available
as consultants for the new team.
PAPHA is changing its fundraising
approach from one major event to several smaller efforts throughout the year.
These include an art show and redesigning the Old Town Festival to raise
a bit more money. It still will keep the
annual auction, but more intimate on
a smaller scale this year. Visit the museum website for details.
Conversion of the east row boat barns
into a Maritime exhibit hall is moving
along. The new storm-proof doors
have been installed and a pair of windows per barn is next. This will give the
light and ventilation needed to make the
barns function as a proper exhibit area.
The exhibits to be housed there are
under development right now. They will
include a mix of artifacts and panels in
our normal style like the Downtown
Branch, but heavier on artifacts. We
will have at least four boats on display.
Development of a period correct boat
shop is on in one bay where visitors
may try their hand at various boat building skills.
Downtown Branch
from 11 different states in June and the
gift shop is doing its job as planned,
producing a steady stream of income to
support our efforts.
We need a roof repair done and are
looking for a roofer that can do wood
shingle work. People with these skills
are getting pretty rare. Even finding the
shingles has become a challenge. We
may have to change to a composition
roof when this one finally wears out.
Visitation is normal for this extremely hot time of year with 216 visitors

continued to operate
as a financially viable
non-profit institution.
We have more exciting things
planned for the future. We will
offer two new evening classes in the
first quarter of 2017. In addition to
our popular wood carving class we
will offer model boatbuilding and
hollow shaft paddle building classes.
We will continue to develop new
boatbuilding classes, events and
camps with a goal of offering ten to
twelve per year.
We plan to replace the QT skiff
design used for the Family Boat
Building with a smaller version of
the Port Aransas skiff. Designed
inhouse, it better represents our Port
Aransas boatbuilding heritage. It
will be thirteen' long and use about
the same amount of material as the
QT Skiff.
A marine architect is currently
designing a plywood adaptation of
the 22’ Farley Tarpon Skiff “Tina”.
We hope to debut the plans at the
upcoming Port Aransas plyWooden
Boat Festival. The new version will
look much like the original. A test build
of the new generation Tarpon Skiff is
planed after completion of the Scow
Schooner.
We are looking forward to opening
the Farley Boat Works Museum exhibit
hall to enrich the experience of our
visitors. It will allow us to better exhibit
our collection of watercraft and artifacts
and to tell the story of Port Aransas
maritime history. The exhibit hall will
be located on the grounds of the Boat
Works.
We are having our Third Annual
plyWooden Boat Festival on Columbus
Day Weekend, October 8-10. We are
striving to attract more local sponsors
for the Festival to grow it into a major
visitor attraction for Port Aransas and a
fundraiser for the Boat Works.
We are taking a break from Second
Saturday party during the hot months
of July and August. Our next Second
Saturday will be September 10.
We had 112 visitors tour the Boat
Works in June.

Build a boat at Festival
It has been two years this month that
I’ve been managing the Farley Boat
Works. It has been an exciting couple
of years as we expanded to build a
wide array of boat types in response
to a changing market. We moved
from building boats taking one to nine
months to boats taking less time to build
and better suited to younger working
families and youth. We now offer
family boatbuilding, youth boatbuilding
and a pre-kited Port Aransas skiff that
can be built in just two weeks. We
partnered with a kayak kit company
that will allow us to schedule a kayak
building classes. The Farley Boat
Works co-produces the Port Aransas
plyWooden Boat Festival that has
exhibited close to one hundred wooden
boats to further promote wooden boats
and boatbuilding in Port Aransas. Since
coming to the Boat Works I have guided
the building of thirty-five boats, for a
total of sixty-two since we reestablished
the Farley Boat Works in 2011. In
addition, the Farley Boat Works has

The Port Aransas plyWooden Boat Festival is only three months away! Time to
mark Oct. 8, 9 and 10. Bring your boat
and if you do, register ahead to be first in
the drawings of over $300 in door prizes.
If not, think about building a boat at the
show. We have an opportunity for families or
individuals to build boats during the festival.
Perfect for groups or businesses that want
to do team building. Three options are available, a skiff, a canoe and a motor Canoe.

The couple applied fiberglass and strakes to the bottom of Shanty Girl with much appreciated help from Gerard
and Mona Mittelstaedt. They then put a skirt on Shanty Girl and painted epoxy and graphite on her bottom.
