FACT SHEET Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) General • Founded by Pope Pius XI, Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) has been a lifeline for the poor throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe for more than 85 years. • CNEWA helps Eastern Catholic churches survive and continue their work of identifying needs and implementing solutions that alleviate poverty, encourage dialogue, affirm human dignity and inspire hope in the region. • Headquartered in New York City; offices in Ottawa, Beirut, Amman and Jerusalem • Six full-­‐time staff based in Ottawa; more than 12,000 donors across Canada • Annual revenues of $2.7 million for 2013, 88% of which goes to support CNEWA’s primary initiatives below. For Christians—mostly in Iraq, Syria and Egypt—
increasing harassment, attacks and killings have put extra pressure on this very fragile community. Out of 8 million Christians, about 400,000 have left Egypt since 2011 9 million Syrians forced to leave their home, with some 600,000 Christians displaced; Increased attacks on Christians in the last six months. Since 2003, Christian population of Iraq has declined by 70%, from 1 million to 300,000; Thousands of Iraqi refugees are still in limbo in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
