Message from the Vice President
GOCC is Celebrating its 42nd Year - 1972 to 2014! Oct 2 01 4 Volume 4, Issue 10 Glass Odyssey Corvette Club, P.O. Box 124 Silverdale, WA 98383 Website: www.kitsapvettes.org Message from the Vice President As you know, our esteemed Prez is on vacation – he may be enjoying a ride in a Corvette as you read this. October is almost here – time to consider putting the Corvette up for the winter, maybe a battery tender and a dust cover until March. Then sit by the fire with a glass of sherry and consider all the good times you had last summer. BUT there are still some fun times ahead including the Halloween party 24 October. Look for more on this from Keith & Mary Kay. Trenna and I just got back from the NCM Caravan trip with Chuck & Cassandra Cooley, Mike & Christine Dosa, Bob & Marty Whitlock, Byron & Sally Kane, Mike & Margie Shurts, Dave Van Asten, Don & Vicki Sandstrom, and Larry & Barbara Gauer to Bowling Green. Our thanks go out to Chuck and Cassandra Cooley for their efforts to keep all 17 of us in nine Corvettes informed and oncourse during the six days of driving from Kirkland, WA to Bowling Green, KY. Although when Mike Shurts was the point man, it occasionally took going 120 mph to keep up with his Atomic Orange 2007 Z06. Each of us learned something from the trip about our family, our friends, the country, and our 'Vettes. The Gauers had some overdrive concerns, Dave Van Asten had some wheel vibration events, and Mike Shurts had battery problems and windshield damage. As for our 2012 Grand Sport, our 6745 mile round trip showed just how well engineered the C6 is – We had only two problems: we had to replace the gas cap that would not lock and had to fix the driver's seat belt receptacle. The seat belt problem was caused unknowingly by a penny falling out of my right pants pocket into the receptacle as we were sitting in the car waiting to drive the parade laps at the new NCM Motor Sports Park. The penny was jammed in solid when I attempted to fasten the belt and the receptacle could not be turned upside down to try and shake out the penny. Fortunately, a fellow (Max Seiburg) in the Corvette ahead of us had a full tool kit and after trying several tools, fashioned a claw from a small flathead screw driver and we were able to get the penny out and run the parade laps safely. Lessen: keep your change in your left pocket. Three short slide shows of the Caravan trip are available on YouTube: Part 1 to Bowling Green: http://youtu.be/twm1h-FP31c Part 2 at Bowling Green: http://youtu.be/ArGXgvn_3A8 Part 3 return to Port Orchard via Beale Street and Rt. 66: http://youtu.be/32EuMfN1t5c We visited the Assembly Plant but were not allowed to photograph inside. Hopefully the Caravan participants will soon be adding to this chronicle. There are any number of ways to get your car, your thoughts or both onto these pages. In the interest of making it as easy as possible for you to join in the fun, I thought it might be helpful to run down a list of all the avenues we offer. Readers’ Replies: We’re always interested in your thoughts about the magazine: Email the editor, listed on page 1. Corvette of The Month: This is where we invite you to share your passion for your car with your fellow enthusiasts. All we need are one or two high-resolution photos of your car (or collect ion of cars), and a little background from you on the experience of owning the car—how long you’ve had it, where you found it, what you’ve done to it and what you love about it. Trip or Event: Do you have a great story about a trip or event you participated in, it might be a good candidate for a one-page feature. Did-YA-Know? and Tech Talk: If you’ve discovered a missing piece of automotive history, or have some wisdom about operating or maintaining Corvettes, this is the place to come to. For Sale: got something you want to sell? Let us know. Tech Talk: It's that time of year again when the weather starts to turn ugly and the daylight hours seem to get shorter. Don't get left out in the cold without having your vehicles Fall Safety Inspection performed. The Fall Safety Inspection consists of the following items: Brake inspection Tire rotation Pressure check cooling system for leaks and proper freeze protection level. Built for research and development, the Green Slime, which was fitted with three different bodies between 1997 and 2002, packs a Vortecsupercharged 435/608 HP LS engine that takes it to upwards of 200 MPH yet offers complete drivability and excellent fuel mileage at low speeds, features made possible by an M12 6speed and 3.42 rear end. Mallet-Penske coilover suspension combines with Alcon 13.5-inch slotted disc brakes using 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers and PFC pads to provide solid handling. Builder Chuck Mallett describes the Slime as the first streetable C5 Corvette, a claim backed by its participation in multiple One Lap of America and Car & Driver Shootout events. A feature subject in a dozen magazines and TV shows, this Mallett creation is in a league of its own. This Corvette will go to auction, Mecum Lot S146, in Chicago, Oct 911, 2014 and could be a replacement for the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Mallett Hammer Z06 destroyed by the NCM sinkhole. The 700-horsepower and 575-pound-feet-oftorque Mallett Hammer was one of the two cars that were hidden under rocks and dirt when the sinkhole swallowed the cars. It was found upside down and was destroyed beyond recognition by some of the heavy boulders that landed on it. "I expected bad, but it's 100 times worse. It looks like a piece of tin foil ... and it had a roll cage in it! It makes all the other cars look like they're brand new," said Mallett-donator Kevin Helmintoller in the official museum statement. An early charge by Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R at the start of the race raised hopes as the Spaniard moved from seventh to fifth in the opening laps. The momentum couldn't continue, however, for the team's two Corvette C7.Rs. Garcia and Jan Magnussen finished ninth in GTLM, followed by the No. 4 Corvette C7.R of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner in 10th place. The final race of the TUDOR Championship is Petit Le Mans on Saturday, Oct. 4 from Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. Live coverage will be available on FOX Sports 2 and IMSA.com. National Corvette Museum Sinkhole The National Corvette Museum Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting and finalized plans for repair of the Museum’s Skydome building, and the eight Corvettes affected by the February 12, 2014 sinkhole collapse. News & Information continued next page Page 5 News & Information from page 4 After careful review of additional information and revised plans with price quotes from the construction company, the board voted to completely fill in the sinkhole. “We really wanted to preserve a portion of the hole so that guests for years to come could see a little bit of what it was like, but after receiving more detailed pricing, the cost outweighs the benefit,” said Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode. “At the June board meeting, the information available at that time indicated a cost of around $500,000 more to keep the hole, but after incorporating additional safety features and vapor barriers for humidity control, the price tag rose to $1 million more than the cost to put the Skydome back how it was.” 1954 MOTORAMA CORVAIR "The cars are being inspected for a suspect part that attaches the air bag to the steering wheel. Separately, another 800 Corvettes — most of them at dealerships — are on hold because they may have been built with only one of the rear parking brake cables fully seated and engaged. The part must be inspected to assure the parking brake is operating on both brake drums," Adler said. From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140912/AUTO0103/30912006 7#ixzz3ERjSyw5W Detailed Recall Information for Chevrolet Corvette 2014-06-27 Besides the Corvette, GM was showing other Corvettelike designs at the 1954 Motorama. One was the Corvair. The Corvair name was a combination of Corvette and Bel Air. The application of the fastback roof was so clean that it looked like that’s the way Harley Earl designed the car from the beginning. The Motorama Corvair was painted bright burgundy red and then repainted ‘50’s-style Sea Foam Green for the March 1954 Los Angeles Motorama. Had the Corvette not been refreshed in ‘56, the fastback design from the Corvair show car might have worked in the marketplace. Only one Corvair was made and was allegedly seen in a Michigan salvage yard in the late ‘70s. However, a GM worker claims the car went to the crusher. RECALLS Washington — General Motors Co. told its dealers to halt sales of about 2,800 new Chevrolet Corvettes for possible defects. In recent months, GM has issued similar stop sales before issuing new recalls. GM spokesman Alan Adler declined to confirm the Detroit automaker planned to recall the vehicles, but said very few of the 2,800 vehicles are in customer hands. Adler said GM told Chevrolet dealers to stop delivery of about 2,000 2015 Corvettes to fix the driver’s airbag. GM also has temporarily stopped shipment of the cars from its assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky. (Published by NHTSA on 2014-08-01) Recall Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured February 12, 2014, to March 14, 2014. Due to an improper weld on the rear shock absorbers, the shock absorber tubes may separate from the shock absorber clevis brackets resulting in a sudden change in vehicle handling. 2014-06-19 (Published by NHTSA on 2014-07-23) Recall Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured November 20, 2013, to March 25, 2014, and equipped with optional sport seats. The seats do not meet internal specifications for injury protection in relation to an unbelted young child. 2014-06-06 (Published by NHTSA on 2014-06-18) Recall Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured April 23, 2014 to April 25, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) may experience an internal short circuit, resulting in the deactivation of the air bags and seat belt pretensioners. 2014-05-15 (Published by NHTSA on 2014-05-16) Recall Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles manufactured March 29, 2004, through June 22, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC) housing can expand and cause the headlamp low beam relay control circuit wire to bend. If the wire is repeatedly bent, it may fracture causing a loss of low beam headlamp illumination. News & Information continued next page Page 6 News & Information from page 5 2011-10-03 (Published by NHTSA on 2011-10-03) Recall Summary: General Motors (gm) is recalling certain model year 20112012 Chevrolet Corvette coupe vehicles, manufactured from January 24, 2011, through September 1, 2011, for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 206, "door locks and door retention components". The rear hatch hinges may not meet the load requirements specified in the safety standard. 2010-04-27 (Published by NHTSA on 2010-04-27) Recall Summary: Gm is recalling certain model year 2005 and 2006 Chevrolet Corvette passenger cars manufactured between March 2004 and January 2006 equipped with a tilt and telescoping steering column (RPO n37). In rare cases, repeated movement of the steering column may cause a signal interruption within the column. If this occurs, the message, "service active handling system" will appear in the driver information center, and one or more of the brakes may apply, possibly causing the vehicle to pull to the right or left. 2009-12-23 (Published by NHTSA on 2009-12-23) Recall Summary: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2005 through 2007 Corvette vehicles equipped with a removable roof and model year 2006 and 2007 Corvette z06 vehicles. The adhesive between the roof panel and the frame may separate. If there is a partial separation, the driver may notice one or more symptoms, such as a snapping noise when driving over bumps, wind noise, poor roof panel fit, roof panel movement/bounce when a door or hatch is closed, or a water leak in the headliner. 2006-05-24 (Published by NHTSA on 2006-05-24) Recall Summary: On certain 2005-2006 Chevrolet Corvettes equipped with painted roofs, the adhesive between the roof panel and the frame may separate. 2004-11-03 (Published by NHTSA on 2004-11-03) Recall Summary: Certain passenger vehicles were produced with one or both rear brake hydraulic lines that can come in contact with or be affected by heat from the left engine exhaust manifold and the left exhaust pipe. The brake fluid could reach elevated temperatures and boil. 2004-06-16 (Published by NHTSA on 2004-06-16) Recall Summary: On certain passenger vehicles involved in this campaign, the lower control arm ball stud nut/washer assemblies with washers were made of the wrong material. The washers may fracture and become loose or fall away from the vehicle, reducing clamp load. Separation of the control arm ball stud and steering knuckle, due to disengagement of the tapered attachment and retaining nut, is possible. 2004-02-09 (Published by NHTSA on 2004-02-09) Recall Summary: On certain passenger vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ECL), when the ignition switch is turned to "lock," the ECL system prevents turning of the steering system. When the vehicle is started, the ECL unlocks the steering system. The vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started and the customer tries to drive, the fuel supply will be shut off so that the vehicle cannot move when the vehicle cannot be steered. If voltage at the power-train control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering system is locked. Also when the control system shows that the ECL is unlocked and the vehicle is being driven, the lock pin location can vary. Depending on the location of the lock plate relative to the switch transition point, there could then be contact between the lock plate and pin causing the steering to lock while driving . 2000-04-28 (Published by NHTSA on 2000-04-28) Recall Summary: Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The lap belt webbing can twist allowing the webbing to become jammed in the retractor.
