MHS STEM Academy Sets Standard
for Science Education in New Jersey
In 2002, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals awarded a $500K grant to establish a science academy
within Morristown High School. The program has inspired hundreds of students and become
one of the foremost centers for high school science education in New Jersey. It has now
evolved into a full-fledged STEM Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
offering a 4-year sequence of concentrated, integrated study in these fields. more inside>

1:1 Learning Supports 21st Century Skills
In a pilot program initiated in the fall
of 2012, all 7th-grade students at
Frelinghuysen Middle School were issued
personal electronic devices for use in
the classroom and at home, making instruction and learning available to
students 24/7. Feedback from teachers,
students and parents was overwhelmingly positive. As a result, all students in
grades 7-9 now have personal Chrome
Books, and the program will expand
to grades 7-12 in September 2014. This
initiative is funded by tuition received
from other school districts whose students
choose to attend the Morris School
District under the New Jersey Interdistrict
Public School Choice Program.
“In addition to being literate in the traditional
sense, today’s students must also be
technologically literate,” said Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Thomas Ficarra. “They must
be able to effectively use and apply
technology to research, analyze, and
communicate information. This program
will ensure equitable access to the technology
that will allow all our students to do so.”
1:1 learning allows students and teachers to
use apps to create and share documents,
presentations, and multimedia projects.
These documents are stored in “the cloud,”
facilitating teacher feedback and student
review and reflection.
“The 1:1 environment provides students
opportunities to explore learning in new
ways, using applications and programs
that encourage continuous inquiry. It also
enables teachers to leverage classroom
productivity and personalize instruction,”
said Frelinghuysen Principal David Thompson.
Extensive professional development prepared teachers to successfully integrate
technology into their curriculum and
instruction.
Chrome Books are used seamlessly
throughout the school day and beyond.
Teachers guide students as they research
and collaborate through individual or
group projects that actively engage students in learning. “Technology immersion
has not diminished the vital role of the
teacher,” observed Thompson.
FMS students use Chrome Books in classrooms
and at home to support learning
“It has transformed the
teacher from a director of
learning to a facilitator of
learning. The use of Chrome
Books has empowered
students to maximize their
potential and prepare for
college and the workplace.”
- Frelinghuysen Principal David Thompson
F.M. Kirby Foundation
Brings History to Life
A generous grant from the F.M. Kirby
Foundation provided an innovative
professional development program for
Morris School District social studies and
language arts teachers.
Presented by the renowned Gilder
Lehrman Institute of American History,
this program, Teaching Literacy through
History, helped teachers learn how to
incorporate primary source documents in
their instruction in order to meet Common
Core English language standards and
support literacy skills across disciplines.
These skills include analytical thinking,
persuasive writing, and development of
fact-based arguments.
Over the course of 4 months during the
2012 through 2014 school years, cohorts
of 25 English language arts and social
studies teachers became students under
the leadership of Gilder Lehrman staff
and visiting historians. Through readings
and instructional exercises, teachers
gained experience and confidence in a
broad range of teaching methods using
historic documents connected to seminal
moments in American history.
“We are extremely grateful to the F.M.
Kirby Foundation for providing our
teachers the opportunity to work with the
Gilder Lehrman Institute,” said Michael
Lockman, Supervisor of Social Studies.
“The combination of content and skill
development provided useful and
practical experiences for our teachers.
These techniques have helped to stimulate
thoughtful classroom discussion and a
more common understanding of our
national heritage.”
SCORE judge reviews FMS resort team marketing plan
FMS Shark Tank Project WOWS Judges
Teams of Frelinghuysen Middle School 6th-grade Quest students spent 4 months building
a virtual business from the ground up in a project designed by the NJ Consortium for
Gifted and Talented Programs. Project WOWSEE (World of Work Simulated Entrepreneurial
Experience) challenged students to create a comprehensive business plan for a themed
resort. Each student assumed the role and responsibilities of a key member of the resort’s
management team to create, present, and defend documents and data to support
each aspect of the business plan. Just as real-world entrepreneurs are required to do,
each team pitched its final plan to a panel of prospective investors.
Throughout the project students received guidance and support from volunteers from
SCORE, a partner of the Small Business Association. From concept to completion, students
worked collaboratively to develop an understanding of business plans and practices.
Each team was required to use technology to create a balance sheet, website, videos,
radio and TV commercials, marketing and advertising campaigns, and to research
and develop an understanding of the industry’s competition. The final plan required
one-, three-, and five-year growth projections.
SCORE volunteers judged students’ projects in a Shark Tank scenario in which each
team presented its plan to the panel of seasoned executives. “We were blown away
by the level of preparation and mastery of presentation in each proposal,” said SCORE
judge Hart Coven.
“This project is but one of many innovative learning
opportunities that make the Morris School District so special.”
- SCORE Judge Hart Coven
When asked if she was nervous about presenting the plan to the panel of judges, one future
real-life CEO replied, “No. We each did our respective job and came together as a team
to work through all aspects of our proposal. The coaches from SCORE were very supportive
and gave us great perspective. They will be welcome guests at any of our resorts!”

Alumni Achievements:
Carl Sparks, President & CEO, Travelocity
We are pleased to circle back with one
of our Morristown High School esteemed
alumni. Our first featured alum is none
other than Carl Sparks, MHS Class of ’85.
After graduating from Morristown High
School, Carl continued his educational
journey graduating summa cum laude
from Princeton University and receiving
his master’s in Business Administration with
Highest Distinction from Harvard University.
After an impressive career with Capital
One, Expedia, and The Gilt Groupe, Carl
is currently the President and CEO of
Travelocity Global. In his role, Carl oversees a
portfolio of travel brands across the globe,
including Travelocity.com, lastminute.com
in Europe, and the Travelocity Partner
Network, which provides travel solutions to
businesses.
Carl has lived in cities all over the world
including Boston, London, New York, Austin, Stamford and Seattle. We were able to
catch up with Carl in Dallas. He is married
with three children and two yellow labs!
“What is your favorite memory of Morristown High School?”
CS: “My favorite memory is running cross
country with John Barnacle as our coach.
The guys I ran with became my best
friends.”
“What experiences at the high school
would you attribute to your success?”
CS: “Academics and sports… and of
course the diversity. I had many excellent
teachers that I felt gave an outstanding
education in biology, chemistry, math,
English, and physics. Coming into
Princeton, I felt I had received just as good
an education as any of my peers from
the private schools. Also, being coached
by John Barnacle helped develop my
character. I learned how to work hard,
and that hard work is its own reward even
if you are not number one. Dedication,
resilience, having a positive attitude, and
the value of teamwork were all aspects of
my athletic experience in the high school.
Also, because Morristown was more
culturally and ethnically diverse, I felt that
I went out into the world with a better
appreciation of people’s differences and
valuing those differences. “
“Who was your favorite teacher and why?”
CS: “Two teachers come to mind. First,
Saul Swanger. He was a brilliant teacher
who could reach all of his students. He had
a true passion for teaching… he actually
made Calculus AP fun! And, my Cross
Country Coach John Barnacle for teaching me and my good friends so many life
lessons.”

MHS Winter Sports Roundup
Wild wind. Record-breaking cold. Incessant snow and ice. What a winter! What a great
winter! At least it was in Morristown where winter sports teams brought home a State
Championship; a Group Championship; numerous Sectional, Conference and County
Titles; 3 NJAC Sportsmanship Awards and numerous individual honors for coaches and
athletes.
2014 College
Acceptances
Roll In
Once again, Morristown High School’s
college acceptance season was an
impressive one. For some students, the
season began late last fall when Early
Decision admissions were announced.
Three students received Early Decision
acceptances to the University of Pennsylvania. Other early acceptances
awarded to MHS students include those
from Lehigh, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon,
Trinity, Vanderbilt, the College of William
and Mary, and Mount Holyoke.
Boys’ Basketball - The boys’ Conference Championship basketball team had
a spectacular 20-3 season. Led by Morris County Player of the Year, Sean Hoehn, the
talented team included seniors AJ Tracey, James Mongey, Zach Certner, Matt Strambi,
Drew Hahn, Eric Demnitz, Nick Duff, junior Jack Mongey, and sophomores Collin Brunnock,
Rohan Walker, and freshman Kevin Hoehn. Sean and teammate, Nick Duff, were NJAC
1st Team selections. Coach Bill Connolly was named Morris County Coach of the Year.
Wrestling - The wrestling team had
the best season in MHS history, tallying 22
wins. Led by team captains Declan
Paterson and Freddy Ruiz, the team
received the NJAC Sportsmanship Award.
Indoor Track - Fleet-footed four-
some Greg Arabagian, Sean Lyons, Ruddy
Torres, and John Vallacchi ran away with
the 4x800 NJ Group III State Championship
Relay title. Bringing home State Sectional
Championships were Sean Lyons (1600 and
3200 meter races) and Sean Wukitsch (shot
put). Sean also captured Morris County
Championship titles in the 1600 and 3200
meter races.
Ice Hockey - The third time was a
charm for MHS Hockey as it captured the
Public B State Championship Title at the
Prudential Center on March 9! Captain
Brian Begley scored the lone goal of the
game and All-State goaltender Shane
Brown shut down powerhouse Ramsey.
Brian Begley, Kyle Beyer, and Shane Brown
were named to the NJ Devils All-Tournament
Team. Begley was honored with the
Mennen Division Sportsmanship Award
and Coach Bobby Jones was named the
Star Ledger State Ice Hockey Coach of
the Year. When all was said and done, the
team was named the #1 public school
hockey team in the state and #6 overall!
Swimming - The boys’ and girls’
swim teams made history by capturing the
NJ State Sectional Titles. Although each
team has won the title previously, never
have both teams done so in the same
year, and both won NJAC Sportsmanship
Awards! The boys’ team also came out
on top in the Morris County Championship meet, taking the title for the second time in 3
years. Selected to the NJAC 1st Team Swim Team were Mark Beston, Matthew Critchley,
Michael Crowley, Derek He, Brian Honicky, Michael Macchia, and James Viotto. Coach
Donna Gelegonya was named Daily Record Morris County Girls’ Swim Coach of the Year.
Though not yet complete, the spring
acceptance season has been equally
impressive. Spring admissions to the most
competitive colleges include: Boston
College (3), UC Berkeley, Carnegie
Mellon, Case Western Reserve, Colgate,
Cornell (2), Dartmouth (2), Duke, Emory,
Georgetown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins
(2), Lehigh, Northwestern, Princeton, RPI
(5), Trinity, Tufts, Stanford, Vanderbilt (3),
University of Virginia (3), US Air Force
Academy, Wesleyan, the College of
William and Mary, and Yale, among others.

College Board AP Honor Roll Cont’d
Historic
Scholarship Cont’d
The Eklund scholarship will be awarded
to a junior student who demonstrates
financial need and eagerness to pursue a
career in teaching, preferably at the
secondary level. Applicants are
encouraged to apply in their junior year,
as the award of this scholarship will impact
their college decision-making process.
“We are thrilled to be the recipient of this
amazing gift,” said Molly Servais, Chairperson of the Morris Educational Foundation. “We are committed to growing
resources that impact the lives of our
students and this includes our scholarship
endowment,” she added. “Philanthropic
giving plays a critical role in advancing
the work that we do here at the MEF,”
Servais said.
“It is an honor for a school to have one National AP Scholar
a year... to have four National AP Scholars in one year is
extraordinary.” - Director of Guidance Scott White
In 2013, Morristown High School students’ average AP scores and percentage of AP
tests passed were statistically significantly higher than both state and national averages.
“Historically, Morristown High School students have performed exceptionally well on AP
tests, but these scores are nothing short of spectacular. What is most impressive is that a
significant percentage of our students participate in AP testing. Those two facts seldom
go hand in hand,” said Scott White, Director of Guidance.
Ninety-two Morristown High School students received College Board recognition for
exceptional performance on the 2013 AP tests. Included among these are 31 AP
Scholars, 23 AP Scholars with Honor, 30 AP Scholars with Distinction, and 4 National
AP Scholars. National AP Scholars must have an average score of at least 4 on all AP
exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on 8 or more of these exams. Morristown High
School’s 2013 National AP Scholars earned scores of 5 on 30 out of 35 exams taken.
MHS STEM Academy Sets Standard Cont’d
“STEM education is not just a new name for the traditional approach to teaching
science and mathematics, nor is it simply grafting layers of technology and engineering onto standard science and math curricula,” said Christopher Duvall, Supervisor
of Science. “Rather, STEM education removes the traditional barriers among the four
disciplines by providing a curriculum that honors connections among them.” The engineering component emphasizes the process and design of solutions rather than solutions themselves. The technology component allows students to apply what they have
learned, utilizing specialized tools including a 3D printer, an entire broadcasting studio,
and computers with professional applications.
Students enrolled in the MHS STEM Academy may select from among several STEM
electives while completing a required Research Science course during freshman year.
Included among these electives are Biology of Thought; Principles of Engineering;
Computer-Aided Design; and Nanoscale Science and Engineering, a unique course
developed in affiliation with the Soft Materials Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology.
By tenth grade, students choose to concentrate in one of five STEM tracks of study:
biomedicine, engineering, architecture, environmental sustainability, or computer
science. Mentorships, field trips and guest speakers are provided throughout the year
through partnerships with leading universities, hospitals, and corporations including
Rutgers, the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, Covanta, Novartis, Honeywell, Johnson and
Johnson, and Morristown Medical Center.
The STEM Academy is a competitive program that admits 48 freshmen from among
approximately 100 students who apply. Students interested in attending the MHS STEM
Academy are invited to submit an application in the fall of their eighth grade year.
Morristown’s Got Talent Cont’d
The evening also featured a video message from The Cake Boss’s Buddy Valastro, along
with nationally recognized judges from the performing arts community. First place of $1000
went to Sara Dalpe, Valerie Bai, and Jordan Rabinowitz, of Band of Misfits. Second place
of $500 went to Marimba Four, featuring percussionists Stephen Ferm and Emily Carvalho,
Reed Puleo and Neil McNulty. Third place of $250 went to jazz performers Joe Van Loon
and Chris DelSordi.
“The generosity of loyal
alumni like George and
Shirley is humbling.”
- MEF Chairperson Molly Servais
“We are grateful for our district partner, the
MEF, who continues to attract donations
in support of our students and programs,”
said Dr. Thomas Ficarra, Superintendent of
the Morris School District. “We are pleased
to collaborate with the MEF on several
initiatives that have great impact on the
lives of our students.”
Carl George Eklund graduated
Morristown High School as an honors
student. The 1939 Morristown High School
yearbook, The Cobbonian, refers to him
by the nickname “Bing,” and states,
“The Class of ’39 is proud to claim him as
one of its members.” After graduation,
George joined the Army, and in 1942
George married MHS classmate, Shirley Lanterman. Following an honorable
discharge from the army in 1945, George
began a distinguished and successful
40-year career with the New Jersey Bell
Telephone Company.
Carl George and Shirley Eklund, Class of 1939
The new Eklund Scholarship Fund will be
