trip to Israel over the
winter vacation - is really
not a vacation . Ask any
one of the thirty -four
teenagers who trave led
with us. (Some of whom
are
still
recovering).
Touring Israel with our
young adults was intensive, emotional, spiritual , inspirational,
demanding, an all embracing experience - and so much fun. It
involved early-risings , hours of
walking, hiking, crawling (through
caves) , climbing (Masada) , jeep
rides (Golan), camel rides and endless pleasures. It was a unique
experience to walk along the
streets of Jerusalem. It was almost
like being in a dream, especially on
Friday before Shabbat. We were
drawn to the Wall, to welcome Shabbat, to utter our
innermost hopes , dreams
and prayers. Yes, it was
like being in a dream - a
dream which sparked beautiful Jewish feelings deep
inside of each of us.
Of this I am sure; our students
will remember this special experience for the rest of their lives. This
trip profoundly touched, inspired
and moved us - and it will remain
one of our most beautiful Jewish
memories. I personally feel privileged to have been able to share
this sacred journey with you.

Break out of the the major holiday
rut!! If you were here for Sukkot,
you don't want to miss Tu B'Shevat.
That's right. .. Tu B'Shevat!! We know
it's not one of those holidays that's in
the center of your Jewish consciousness , but after the FCC gets through
with this holiday, we know that will
change. For every year to come you
will yearn longingly for Tu B'Shevat.
You will dream of Israel, the budding
of trees, and exotic Israeli type fruits .
Who knows, you may even be able
to spell the name of this holiday!!
Join us at the Temple on Friday
evening, January 24, 1997 at 6:00
p.m. We will begin with a Tu
B'Shevat picnic dinner, followed by a
Tu B'Shevat Seder. You pack the
picnic, we do the seder. Refreshments will be served. The cost of
the picnic dinner is $5.00 per family
Tu B'Shevat

Or. Mark Sobel
O ver the years at Temple
Emanuel , we 've been fortunate to
have many members who have
worked tirelessly in their pursuit to
help the less fortunate among us .
Our Tzedakah and Social Action
Projects abound. Casserole preparation , a project of Sisterhood each
month brings over 250 hot lunches
to the Neighborhood Center in
Camden. Many of our Bar/ Bat
Mitzvah students are involved in this
project. A fact you might not be
aware of is that casseroles can be
prepared at home and then brought
to the Temple for distribution. Pearl
Braunstein is in charge of this project and can be reached at 424-2238
for more information.
Geri Rudner , Vice President ,
Social Action and current ch airperson of Temple Emanuel's "Caring
Hands" is busily working with her
committee on many projects. In
December, 78 holiday baskets were
made for distribution to the AIDS
Coalition. Clothing and personal care
items are now being collected for
Solace - A Women's Shelter, and for
homeless men.
Our Temple Sisterhood sponsors
the Caring Hearts project. A playpen
is set up in the coatroom and donations of infants clothing, diapers, and
other baby items are distributed
monthly to this organization that
helps infants with AIDS.
Our Religious School has a
"Mitzvah of the Month" project. A list
of these monthly projects is available
in the school office or check The
Light. In January, the Religious
School will be collecting "vacation
toiletries". A box is set up in the
Religious School office to accept the
smaller soap, shampoo, lotions, little
sewing kits , etc. that you get on
vacation. These will be delivered
to homeless shelters where people
are unable to store full sized containers of these items.
The collection of canned goods
and non-perishable food items is a
continuous mitzvah at our Temple.
Several times a month, we distribute
our food to JCFS, the South Jersey
Food Bank and the AIDS Coalition.
All the groups are really appreciative
of our efforts to combat hunger.
Our Youth Group, under the leadership of Sandy Umansky has been
PAGE TWO
involved in several "Habitat for
Humanity" ventu res and the Social
Action Committee is planning a project with Habitat in the spring.
This year our Board of Trustees
passed a motion making us an official
Mazon Synagogue. We now contribute a portion of the cost of each
dinner or affair we have at the
Temple to Mazon, an _organization
that fights hunger throughout the
world. We encourage our members
to do the same with a donation to
Mazon of 3% of the food costs of
your affair.
By participating in any or all
of these projects , you will be performing a true mitzvah as well as
making the world a better, kinder
place to live.
To highlight just a few of our
upcoming events:
Our F.c.c. (Festival Celebration
Committee) is busily planning a
wonderful Tu B'Shevat Celebration
including a Tu B'Shevat picnic
& seder, the planting of trees and
more. Plan to be with us on Friday
night, January 24th and enjoy
"The New Year of Trees" with us.
Also on Friday night, January 17,
we will welcome members of
the "Stop the Violence" Coalition as
our guest speakers for Shabbat
evening Services.
We encourage your participation
and welcome your suggestions
for future mitzvah projects and programming . •

By Gerri Rudner, v.P., Social Action
On Sunday , December 8, the

and other non-perishable items that
have been donated by our members.
A total of 78 baskets were completed
and will be distributed to the AIDS
Coalition. Baskets were also donated

YOUTH GROUP
by Sandy Umansky
Dear Youth Group Members,
Well , the whirlwind that was
Chanukah 5757 is behind us , but
youth group is a gift that you can
give yourself throughout the entire
year. While sharing in our monthly
events and activities, you can see the
real meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood : friends waiting to enjoy
being together, to strive to make a
difference in our world.
Tween Canteen'ers, our 5th & 6th
graders will be having a belatedChanukah party (due to the flu and
my trip with the confirmation class to
Israel this month). Shornrim'ers, 7th
& 8th graders, jo ined friends from
Beth Or in Philadelphia for a great
night of dinner and the Franklin
Institute's Laser Light Show. Their ski
trip is fast approaching (Feb. 2nd mark your calendars now). So, get
your skis and snowboards ready! (We
are going to Camelback for this trip and anyone who wants to try snowtubing can join in the fun. I know
I'm looking forward to it.
TEFTY went to the Comedy Sports
Night in December, qUickly followed
by their Ski Day at Shawnee.
There is so much to anticipate that
it's hard to fit it all in. January 17th
thru 19th is our Regional Winter
Convention at Camp Harlem; WINSTY is always one of the most
outstanding weekends of the year.
Plan to be part of it! Immediately
after that is our National Youth Group
Convention in Washington , D.C .,
February 14 - 18th. Meeting over
500 young men and women of
the Reform Jewish Movemen t is
an incredible experience . Learning
and sharing intensify this awesome
weekend. Get your applications
in right now!
Well, have I whetted your appetite
to try our Youth Group yet? Please
say yes - and please join us at our
very next event.
B'Shalom,
Mrs. U.
P.S. I apologize for the technical
error in last month 's article.

MEN'S CLUB

By Carl Grossberg, President
Second grade at Temple Emanuel
Religious School is practically guaranteed to be a happy experience for
our children . Both teachers have
special qualities that enrich their
classrooms. Morah Kathy Kaplan,
a public school librarian, has taught
at Temple Emanuel for several years.
Having lived in Israel for two years at
an earlier time in her life, she is fluent in Hebrew and incorporates it
into her teaching. Mrs. Kaplan also
has a very strong background in
music - she studied at the Manhattan
School of Music - which she uses to
the children's great advantage. Each
year, her classes record Hanukkah
and Passover songs on cassette to
share with their families. She also
uses many arts and crafts projects as
a way of bringing the Bible stories
and holidays alive.
I would like to wish everyone a
happy and healthy New Year. We
have many great events coming up
this season. Among them, a Roller
Skating Party on Sunday, February
2nd. On Sunday morning, March 9th,
at 10:30 a.m ., Rabbi David is the
guest speaker at our Paid Up
Membership Breakfast. His topic, ...
"Domestic Violence " is certain to
draw heated discussion.
Morah Robin Bloom, in her second year of teaching at Temp le
Emanuel, is a long-time member of
the synagogue who attended religious school here from third grade
through post Confirmation and
Midrashah . Ms. Bloom graduated
from Rutgers University in 1994 and
is now a Production Coordinator for
WHYY Public Radio. It is a great
change of pace for her to spend her
Sundays with our second graders,
engaging them in lively conversation
about the holidays and Torah. She is
thrilled with the curriculum changes
since her student days - in second
grade, the children review the Book
of Genesis and stu dy Exodus, the
holidays , the concept of tzedakah
and basic aspects of the synagogue.
Clearly, all second grade students are
in good hands . •

First it was the Big Band era, as
wide eyed young women and innocent young men followed their
favorite ensembles, if only to sway
dreamily as Helen O'Connell, Frank
Sinatra or any number of romantic
singers fronted the band. Years later,
we hit the road with those ultimate
groupie acts, Jimmy Buffett, The
Grateful Dead and Barry Manilow
(okay, some of us were less hip than
others). We at last outgrew the need
to follow the "Dead" or "Barr" from
town-to-town in search of that ultimate concert experience.
After a nearly two decade long
lull, we're back at it again. There is
an ensemble that has been performing a mere three years together. Its
faces change frequently. Just like
that kiddy group Menudo, as members grow too long in the tooth, their
p lace is taken by much younger
faces. To the majority of the congregation, this group is known as The
Temple Emanuel's Children's Choir.
To one somewhat seasonally stressed
subgroup, it's a way of life.
It all begins when your child
expresses an interest to join the choir.
It meets once a week after Sunday
School. No sweat - you can do that.
Or rather, your spouse can since
Sunday is your day to ignore the
children . It 's a good system - a
way to ease the transi tion if yo u
ever get divorced.
The children quickly learn the
music and practice all the time. Your
child with the lovely alto sings oh so
quietly. The one who finds each
note merely a suggestion is the belter.
No problem, until she's informed (by
the oldest, of course) that it's okay to
just pretend to sing during concerts.
She figures she's intimidated her little
sister and helped th e choir a t the
same time. A Eddie Haskell in the
making.
All goes well until the first letter
arrives - the one that contains their
performance schedule. Four shows
in three days . You worry about fitting in schoolwork. Your kids worry
that they'll look "dorky" unless they
have new choir clothes. Try finding
an inexpensive black skirt and white
blouse in early December. You soon
realize that every color is on sale except black and white.
The debut concert is set for the
first night of Hanukkah at the Cherry

Hill Mall. A community-wide event
featuring several choirs, several rabbis and some guy dressed lik e a
Maccabi, brandishing not a sword,
but its latter day counterpart - raffle
tickets. As the number one choir
groupie, you offer to ride the choir
b~s to the mall. Among the responsiblhrres, you get to redirect the bus
driver just before she heads over the
Ben Franklin Bridge and field trash
and inquiries in your deSignated
choir sector.
The scene at the mall is, at best
o rganized chaos . These kids don't
need parents - they need a sheepdog
to keep them together and ke ep
grandparents at bay. All you can see
in the assembled crowd is a sea of
fathers wield ing video cameras,
acco mpanied by spouses who, in
response, automatically become budding Otto Premingers. "Is the camera
on?" "There she is. Are you getting
the shot?" "Of course you have to
shoot every song at every concert. "
"No, I don't want the camera. You
do it." A highlight or lowlight of parenthood? The jury's still out.
Mounted on th e stairs outside
Strawbridges, the choir sings a
Hanukkah medley and sings it beautifully. This is something Choir
Director Donna Friedman is not really
aware of until later. She is positioned
between speaker col umns and,
although she sees her singers' lips
moving, she must simply have faith
that notes are coming from them.
Performance number two is just on
the other side of the mall - in Macys
Lladro Department. Choir buddies
paired and flanked by the choir
groupies, the ensemble makes its
way down the mall , through the
Perfume Department ("No, you can't
get spritzed. "), down the escalator
("Everyone focus on your feet. ") and
single file through Fine Crystal ("Now
everyone really focus! "). Yet another
triumphal performance. Once again
they sang beautifully and not one
piece of crystal was broken.
The Choir always welcomes new
members - any time of the year. For
kids it's a great new experience. For
parents - you get to be a groupie
again and even party with the performers . •
