Welcome to Clan MacFarlane
Worldwide
When CMW was founded on July 4th, 2010, we
were excited, nervous, and tenuous among other
adjectives. The core group that began the process of forming our new organization was determined to succeed and after five years the foundation
has been solidified and now CMW is thriving.
This is a proud time for Marie and Steve Robb, Laurie and Don Jackson,
my wife, Cheryl, and me. To think that the initial thoughts of starting
our own organization began simply enough around the dinner tables in
Scotland is amazing to think about.
With a lot of planning, organizing, heartache, trials and tribulations, we
officially established CMW on September 11, 2010. CMW and all Clan
MacFarlane members, have established an organization that ALL
MacFarlane’s can be proud of, not just our ever increasing membership.
Cheryl and I personally want to thank everyone (the list is too long to give
everybody’s name) that has taken our fantastic organization from its meager beginnings, to the juggernaut it has become.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
CLAN MACFARLANE WORLDWIDE!!!
I look forward to celebrating many more!

Clan MacFarlane Worldwide was incorporated on July 4th, 2010 in Kansas,
USA. The idea itself was born a year
earlier almost 2 thousand miles away surrounded by the deep waters of Loch Lomond and in the shadow of Ben Lomond. It was on the island of Inveruglas,
a former Macfarlane stronghold, that the
founding members put forth their idea of
a Society that would embrace all descendants of the clan
no matter their current location. A Society that would
work to preserve the
physical and cultural
aspects of Clan MacFarlane. A Society
that would build lasting relations with
the inhabitants of Arrochar, Tarbet,
Ardlui and other ancestral lands. A Society for you!

CMW Founding Members
Note from Your Editor:
It would be easy for me to say, it’s hard to believe it’s been five
years since we formed CMW, but that is far from the case. All of us who helped form CMW
knew in our hearts that we needed a new and positive organization to carry on the traditions and
heritage of all MacFarlane’s and their septs. We all should be proud of what we have accomplished over the last five years. With the constant growth of membership and the fantastic success
of our face book page, we all deserve a big pat on the back. With all, I mean everyone who is associated with CMW. From the original founders, paying members, fellow members and face book
followers, you all have been a big part of making us who we are, and to all of you a big Aye. As we
continue into the future, I am confident that CMW will remain a success due to ability of our
board members and members. With that, I encourage all qualified members to seek and hold office as a board member. This will help bring in new ideas and energy in keeping CMW going for
years to come. To all, I want to thank you again for all you have done and am looking forward to
a great future.
Please enjoy the well wishes of all the founding members who have wholeheartedly participated
in this birthday celebration.

Looking Forward and Looking Backwards
Welcome to a special issue of your Loch Sloy! Although this is a Birthday issue for Clan
MacFarlane Worldwide, Inc., it is also the start of what we hope will be a look at MacFarlane history as well as current global activities of MacFarlanes.
We normally talk about our past and we all enjoy the stories of our roots and where we
come from. Who doesn’t love to hear the stories and imagine walking the same earth our ancestors walked? But we are also here today. So we thought it would be interesting to create a timeline of MacFarlanes. We will reach back as far as we can to create a timeline that we can all add
to, correct, argue about, enjoy and keep growing. But what a timeline that will be!
This issue will start with a nice article by a new addition to the editing team, Malcom
Lobban. He is contributing a piece about the history of the Clan MacFarlane Society Australia,
Incorporated. Then in September, I will do my very best to present you with a timeline of what I
can find about MacFarlanes from our past up until about 1978. I do expect to hear from you for
additions!
Keep your fingers crossed! This will be quite the task. But the idea is that if you have a
piece of your family history that you can add, we will build it in. We will not get too detailed. I
think where this will lead us will be a surprise to us all. And as we reach current day, we will continue to add what we know of MacFarlanes and ourselves as we live our lives now.
As Steve has noted, we have received numerous birthday wishes for CMW. We will start
with Laurie McFarland Jackson’s message, followed by Sandy McFarland Morgan’s, Neal McFarland’s, and then Malcolm’s article. We will then follow with the rest of the wishes. All the birthday wishes are wonderful. Hopefully these will motivate you to participate in CMW activities
whenever you can, because we really are having lots of fun. Which brings me to the upcoming
AMM in Pleasanton, California.
We will gather in September for our annual meeting. Laurie has included a separate message about the AMM, and in particular reminds us all that CMW has negotiated an incredibly low
rate at the Highland Games hotel (a Marriott). However, time is running out to leverage that discount. So don’t dally!
Can’t make it? Email a Board member and give them your proxy for voting at the AMM.
So here we go… and Happy Birthday CMW! It is a pleasure to be a part.

Happy 5th Birthday to US!
By Laurie McFarland Jackson, Founding Member
Former Director, Treasurer and Secretary
Gob smacked… that’s me. Clan MacFarlane Worldwide is five years old and I couldn’t be prouder of our
organization. We were founded on the 4th of July 2010, with our first Annual Membership Meeting
(AMM) on September 11, 2010 in Estes Park, Colorado. So many wonderful things have happened since
then I am blown away.
I found some notes pre-September 11… we contacted MacFarlanes and septs via social media, the Australian “Lantern”, the contact list from our 2009 trip, and through our personal family and friends to alert
that we had begun our journey as a new organization with an invitation to the Estes Park Games and
meeting. Our by-laws, in essence, were to put the power in the hands of our people, not solely the executives of the group. We were committed to an organization that was transparent in its activities and decisions. Leadership would be limited in term to provide fresh ideas and approaches. Each committee
would have a minimum of three people to promote ways for members to participate.
Our Estes AMM was live-streamed … it seemed to last for hours, but was very productive. We solidified
our goals, by-laws, leadership, finances/banking, structure, membership, games, etc. We named our quarterly magazine. We celebrated.
Every AMM since then has been either live-streamed, or recorded then posted on YouTube so all interested parties could stay informed. Our digital magazine is running over 75 pages every issue. Our elections
and by-law changes are sent out via Survey Monkey so that they are counted in an unbiased and transparent manner. Our Facebook page has over 1300 followers. We have worked hard at communicating with
people all over the world. (You can see it is imperative we have your correct email address to facilitate
that communication. If you have had a change, please send it to our Membership Chair, Sandy Morgan, at
[email protected]. )
Other accomplishments include the fact that we are now a legal 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We have
an active project with Family Tree DNA which has provided an extraordinary look into how we all connect. Our genealogists have worked over-time to help our paid members make connections. Our Board
meets monthly via conference call so distance is not an issue.
We are represented at a growing number of Highland Games across the country. We could grow even
more if you could help… if you are interested in helping run a tent, please contact Gregor McFarland at
[email protected]. We will provide assistance to get you started. It is a blast to meet other MacFarlanes and Septs, hear their stories, and make connections.
We had a full bus for our 2014 tour of MacFarlane-centric sites in Northern Ireland and Scotland. We
visited three MacFarlane castle ruins in the Loch Lomond area of Scotland and also spent a morning with
Sir John McFarland on his estate in County Donegal. We hope to return in another 4-ish years... announcements will be made via our website, Facebook page, and magazine.

I also found an early draft of our long term goals… take a look, below (the new goals are posted on our
website):
Clan MacFarlane Worldwide, Inc.
Long Term Goals
*Clan MacFarlane Worldwide, Inc. is a society that will work to research, collect, preserve, and share the physical,
cultural, historical, literary, and genealogical documents, relics, and aspects of Clan MacFarlane. The Board will
revisit these goals annually with members approving them each year.
*We are a society that will build lasting relations with the inhabitants of our ancestral lands and with our cousins
around the world.
*We will help our global family’s young people find their way in the world by helping support them in their studies
by way of an annual scholarship. (Support competitors – athletes, dancers, musicians - who reach a certain level,
with competition entrance fees, etc.)
*We will seek to re-establish the line of our chief and matriculate our arms. We will assist with the search for
family roots and connections to stimulate and inspire among the members, the pride and spirit of their ancestors,
with particular emphasis on the ancestry of the members as it pertains to the surname of MacFarlane and the surnames of the septs historically associated with clan.
*CMW will continue to expand the level of support we give our commissioners who distribute most of our educational materials and teach clan history and culture to clansmen and the interested public.
*It is a goal of CMW to continue to improve the quality and quantity of the type of educational materials that we
distribute at an ever-increasing number of games.
If these goals appeal to you and you believe in them as strongly as we do, we gladly extend Ceud
Mile Failte (a hundred thousand welcomes) to you! Nothing is as strong as the bond of family.
We hope you will join us, take an active part in the society, attend as many games and gatherings
as your time permits, and visit the society’s website frequently in order to stay connected.
Looking over the goals (above), I believe we continue to grow in the
right direction. I want to personally thank you all for your trust,
enthusiasm, and continued participation in CMW. Loch Sloy!

Happy Birthday!
Sandy McFarland Morgan, Director CMW Membership
When Marie asked me to contribute a note concerning the fifth anniversary of the incorporation of CMW,
I realized that for me it feels like I have been part of this wonderful family for so much longer than five
years. In fact my ties to this bunch started several months before July 4, 2010 when I officially reached
out to Preston McFarland, Ian MacFarlane, and Marie Robb to discuss what was happening in Clan
MacFarlane and expressing my interest in joining this group in building an organization based on open
friendship where anyone wanting to find his heritage and preserve his legacy as a proud Scottish or , in my
case, Scots-Irish descendant and have a real (sic) good time on the journey could achieve that goal.
For me, our real beginning was in Estes Park, Colorado where we gathered for the games week end to
agree on the preliminary writing of the Bylaws for this corporation. There in the Rams Horn Lodge,
Randy and Cheryl McFarland, Steve and Marie Robb, Laurie and Don Jackson, Preston and Paula McFarland, Mary Helen and Michael Haines, Maxi Fitzjarrald, Cmell Weaver, Betsy McFarland, and Kip and I
met along with Andrew Macfarlane, Jim and Jo MacFarlane, and William and Claudia Callaway joining by
phone to hammer out a plan. At that meeting, we selected the first board and chose officers and committee chairs by people just saying, “Yes, I can do that; yes, I will do that.”
Our actual membership list began to accumulate in August during which twenty voting members and
twenty-five fellow members enrolled. Of those original voting members, nineteen remain active, often
volunteering, members of CMW. The board decided to designate all who applied for individual or family
memberships during our first fiscal year as Founding Members of CMW. That number reached 82 by
September 15, 2011. Fifty-five of those founding members continue to participate as voting members of
Clan MacFarlane Worldwide.
There was a time when I knew every member’s name and his/her spouse’s name and lots of times the
names of children, where they were from, and even how those members connected to other members.
But, I cannot remember everyone and when he/she joined because now we number more than a thousand
members from every state in the US except Hawaii and every province except Newfoundland and Nunavut in Canada. We have members from the UK and Ireland, from Australia and New Zealand, from
Europe and Japan and Mexico and South America. We are, indeed, a worldwide organization.
I am so pleased to continue to chair the membership committee with the help of dear friends Mary Helen
Haines, Barbara Duff, and, until his resignation, Neal McFarland.
What a lot of fun we are having; what a lot of connections we have made--well, everyone except me, it
seems; what a lot of friends we have added who live in our hearts always. I know that a dream has become a reality for a group of friends
and family in 2009 in Scotland who dared to want something more
and were willing to work hard and tirelessly for the Clan MacFarlane
Worldwide that we have today.

Happy Birthday!
Neal McFarland
Happy 5th CMW! Long may you live!
My most memorable and moving 4th of July occurred during the country’s 1976 bicentennial celebration at
a downtown St. Louis hotel. Several thousand people crammed into the two-block long lobby and bar to
pay tribute to the founding of the United States. The house band began to play “God Bless America,”
and with the first chord the crowd erupted and joined in singing at the top of their lungs. It was a spinetingling sensation I shall never forget. I’m not ashamed to say that tears rolled down my cheeks. Such
was the pride I felt and shared with the thousands of strangers.
My second most moving 4th of July experience actually happened a short time after that date. My friend,
mentor and cousin, Mary Helen Haines, had told me that a group of CMSI members travelling in Scotland
had made a decision to form a new Clan MacFarlane. She added that the new organization would be
more open, heritage, education and member oriented. Proving that transparency, I proudly watched (by
live streaming on the computer) our founders hammer out the first set of by-laws to create Clan MacFarlane Worldwide during their first formal meeting in Colorado. It was like watching the birth of one of my
own children. There was no doubt that I had to be a part of it. As soon as membership opened, I was.
The pride I felt about being a member of CMW has only grown over the past five years. I recently chose
to step aside and be less active. Part of the reason for that decision was the realization that CMW is
blessed with an enormous storehouse of talented members. My decision was solidly reinforced while
reading the current issue of our quarterly magazine. It contains excellent and well-researched articles,
many of which were written by first time contributors. To my mind “Loch
Sloy Magazine” is a world-class non-profit publication with the complementary blend of old and new contributors and ideas.
In addition, the new IRS tax-exempt status and CMW programs and initiatives underway demonstrate just how gracefully Clan MacFarlane Worldwide is maturing. But, beyond those things, I cherish the friendships I
have made along the way.
I am proud to be a founding member of such a young, but dynamic, organization that is following the vision of its founders! Baby steps have
since become full strides in a very short time.
Happy Birthday CMW!

MacFarlanes in Australia
(Clan MacFarlane Society, Australia, Incorporated)
A brief history of the Society Down Under!
Early Days
Being a more recent Scottish migrant to Australia (2001) I do not place myself as a leading authority on
the history of Clan MacFarlane in this vast hinterland of mountains, bush, desert, kangaroos and koalas.
However, having been asked to submit such an article for ‘Loch Sloy’, I shall do my best to please.
From Society records it seems that this Aussie branch of Clann Pharlain began in 1980. In May that
year, the late Julian Millar, who was then Australian representative for Clan MacFarlane Society of USA
& Canada, produced and published the first Australian edition of “MacFarlane’s Lantern” from his home
in in Broadbeach, Queensland.
Issued quarterly by the Society, and edited by Julian until March 1991, the Australian ‘Lantern’ was essential for keeping members informed. The newsletter also did much to create and foster greater social
interaction. The first social gathering of Australian members was at the Orange
Highland Gathering in New South Wales on 29th October 1983. This led to
the inaugural meeting of the Clan MacFarlane Society of Australia (as it was
first called) being held a few days later, on 3rd November.
On 17th August, 1991 the Clan MacFarlane Society, Inc. (USA and Canada)
made Julian an Honorary Member and on 15th October of the same year, he
was appointed as Commissioner for Australia.
In March 1996 Julian was appointed as Patron of the Clan MacFarlane Society in Australia and remained so until his death in November 2005. The Society
became incorporated in 2002 and is now known as The Clan MacFarlane Society, Australia Inc. The present Society acknowledges the important role that Julian Millar (Photo left) played in the establishment of an independent Scottish
clan society in Australia. During the very early period, Julian served as Chairman pro tempore, it being preferred that the position of President be held open
until filled by a member bearing the surname MacFarlane by whatever spelling.
John McFarlane of Cheltenham, NSW, was the first elected president.
By about 1984 separate NSW and Victoria Branches had been formed, however rather than strengthen the Society as had been hoped, relations became
strained There was some criticism from NSW about the structure of the organisation which they believed inhibited its smooth running. In May 1988, Duncan McFarlane of Canterbury, Victoria, was forced to assume the role of Acting President when the Federal President, John
McFarlane, resigned his position – later same year, the NSW Branch was unable to fill the office-bearers
positions at their AGM.
Duncan served the Society very well as Federal President, ably supported by his wife Margaret in whose
home the first gathering of the Victoria Branch was held. In 1993 Ron Robb, who also happened to live
in the same street as Duncan and Margaret, took over as Federal President and he, in turn, was ably supported by his wife Leslie (?), who was also Secretary of the Victorian Branch for several years – many lively ceilidhs were held in the backyard of the Robb family home! The Victorian Branch continued to flourish under the leadership its president, Trevor Macfarlane who, for many years also served as Federal VicePresident.
July 2015—5th Birthday Issue
Loch Sloy!
11
The NSW Branch re-established itself and grew from strength to strength. In 1998 Bob Ridding became Federal President and he put in motion a number of changes, such as revised rules of our Society
and the establishment of a website. It was also this time that we were approached by the International
Clan MacFarlane Society, Inc. to merge or affiliate with them, but problems arose with this which were
never satisfactorily resolved. Meanwhile Glenda Mason was an enthusiastic NSW Branch President but
she resigned from our Society to become the Commissioner for Australia for the International organisation. In addition to having branches in Victoria and NSW we also appointed Councillors in Queensland
and South Australia – although we have never yet been able to establish separate branches in these states.
In 2002 the title of President went to Barry Dixon, whose wife Wendy and son Stephan also became
involved in running the Society. Despite valiant efforts however there was a lack of support in NSW and
from further afield and in 2004 we faced a crisis and a motion was put forward to wind up the Society.
Thankfully, the Victorian members rallied together and a new committee was formed, with Frank Preston
taking on the top job until 2006 supported by Christine Culling as Vice-President.
More Recent Times
The foregoing text in this report is compiled from various Society records and from notes given to me
by our worthy Secretary/Treasurer, Glenda Dickson, who has been a member almost from the beginning
and a long-term Committee member. I have no hesitation in saying that she has been – and is yet -- the
real backbone of our humble organisation. For my part, I first came to know her before coming to Australia, in the days when she was publishing editor of an excellent magazine “The Scots Link” [The Scottish
Family History Magazine – Australia & New Zealand, founded 1987]. She was brave enough to publish
some of my early ‘scribbles’ and invited me to join the Society in November 2005. Glenda is justly proud
of her MacFarlane family roots in Luss, parish and in my own dear Vale of Leven, Dunbartonshire.
In 2008 our President Leona Callaway stood down after two years in office: although she had previous
Committee Service, and at the AGM
in
Victoria I was elected. Photo right –
seen here receiving the traditional
Presidents’ Memorial Tray from
Leona. My own period in office then
ran to our AGM in 2013.
Living in South Australia, I had the
able support of Councillor Janet
Marsh (nee McFarlane) and her husband Ron. My other loyal SA friend
is
Janet’s cousin, Membership Secretary, Anita Renfrey. Working as a
team, I am happy to recall that we
managed to raise the Clan MacFarlane Banner for the first time
(Picture below) at the primary Scottish Highland Games at Mount Barker, and for the next four years we also had a display tent there. Our
society is also a member of Scottish Associations of South Australia, Inc, this being an organisation which
helps SA Scottish groups to maintain active unity.
July 2015—5th Birthday Issue
Loch Sloy!
12
I would like also to mention our NSW representatives Councillor Roy Nash and his wife Barbara, both
are long-term members. Likewise, in Queensland, we are
represented by Councillor Louise Millar, daughter of the
aforementioned Julian She is also the proud mother of
our current President, Robert Millar, who currently lives
and works in Japan with his charming Japanese wife
Masaka.
Because of distance between groups, and modest membership numbers of around 100 families, we generally
communicate via internet and Skype. Sadly, these days, it
seems that most Scottish groups in Australia are managed
by an older generation, with fewer young folk coming
forward to carry on.
Our youngest active member is my own grandson Jason
Moore (21), who is also our official Clan Piper and was
recently appointed Youth Ambassador. Between his university studies and working casually part-time – with some private piping gigs -- he keeps busy and gainfully employed. He also parades regularly as a member of the local City of Elizabeth Pipe Band. There isn’t
an ounce of laziness in the lad – inherited, of course, from his ‘Auld Gran’faither!’
Lastly, the picture (Right) is of some of our veteran members, taken after the 2006 AGM in Victoria:
they are from L to R Enid Macfarlane,
Glenda Dickson (Secretary), Leona Callaway (President), Trevor Macfarlane (pastPresident). Margaret McFarlane and
Mary Cramer.
This report is intended to be nothing
more than a brief look at our somewhat
unique Australian society. However, it is
also a theme for which Secretary Glenda
Dickson and I have made special tentative plans as a future project for our own
members; and I am therefore reluctant to
delve too far into the subject at this time.
But I can say that, currently, we are
holding our own and doing what we can
to keep alive the memory of the Honourable Clan MacFarlane (by whatever spelling!) and have high hopes
for the future. Moreover, our more recent friendly association with Clan MacFarlane Worldwide, Inc.
adds extra confidence towards many more happy years ahead. Best wishes to all Clan members.
Malcolm Lobban.

5 years ago, several good-hearted individuals committed to preserving, sharing, and enlarging our knowledge of our shared MacFarlane heritage, sat
down and fleshed out a way for all MacFarlanes to enjoy, participate, and share in the benefits of CMW. One of the best benefits
of being part of CMW is witnessing the many, many lasting
friendships that have developed often between members over
the last five years. I can't wait to see where the journey takes

A big Happy Birthday to Clan MacFarlane Worldwide! You are wonderful and do so much for us. We are always learning more and
more about ourselves. Everyone is so nice and helpful. This group is
the best of the best! God Bless you all.

It hardly seems like it has been five years since CMW was founded! Time
flies when you are having fun and how can you not have fun with such a
great group of people. Kathlyn and I look forward to representing CMW
tomorrow on its 5th birthday at the Luss Highland Games on Lochlomondside here in Scotland.
Here's to the next five!
Kathlyn & Terrance
Happy Birthday, CMW! My goodness, you've grown so much in the past 5
years! I was so pleased to have been with you in the beginning and to be here
now. With wonderful people and a positive purpose of education and fellowship we're looking forward to many more years as a family. Loch Sloy!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLAN MACFARLANE WORLDWIDE. My,
doesn't time fly by fast when you are a member of a friendly, happy,
growing organization that loves its members? I'm happy to be a charter member of CMW because it epitomizes what an organization
should be. A group of like-minded individuals interested in promoting the increase of knowledge of the clan and Scottish society. Plus,
having fun of helping everyone at the games increase their knowledge of clan association and
their heritage of Scottish origin. Happy Birthday CMW.

Clan MacFarlane Worldwide has brought so many "MacFarlane's" together. This organization and its publication Loch Sloy have given people the vehicle for sharing stories, genealogy, photos, and activities. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to make it a success. Happy 5th birthday, CMW, and many more.

Happy Birthday, Clan MacFarlane Worldwide! From one who was present as its roots were
set, it has been a good 5 years of growth of family and friends. I hope anyone in the Vermont/New Hampshire area will come to the new games on the CMW circuit, the Quechee
Scottish Festival on August 22.

Thrilled to be involved with a group of people so enthusiastic
about the clan, its origins and its continued relevance to the current generation.
Not only that but you are a great bunch of people more interested
in advancing the clan than pushing personal agendas.
Long life and happiness to all founder, current and prospective members of this wonderful
group that make up Clan MacFarlane Worldwide.
Cheers

Maître d'hôtel: 'Are you here for a special occasion?'
MacFarlane: 'Aye, we won the third prize in the annual Robert Burns
Contest, a haggis dinner for two.'
Maître d'hôtel: 'What were the other prizes?'
MacFarlane: The second prize was a single haggis dinner, and, if you
won the first prize, you didnae have to eat the haggis.'
