Welcome to The Woodlands Inaugural Women in Leadership Symposium hosted by the Texas Diversity Council. I would like to thank our corporate partner and symposium Title Sponsor Entergy Texas, Inc. for inviting us to bring this event to The Woodlands & Montgomery County area. This great event offers an opportunity for you to observe, learn, network and hear different perspectives from a diverse panel of executive women leaders. Welcome to the inaugural Women in Leadership Symposium of The Woodlands! We are excited to be a part of the Texas Diversity Council expanding their reach into the Montgomery County area. On behalf of the symposium’s committee and volunteers, we are honored you are celebrating that expansion and the legacy of professional women with us today. The symposium was first established with the launch of the Texas Diversity Council in 2004 and the event is currently being help in many other cities across the country. We are very excited to bring this opportunity to The Woodlands and we appreciate you joining us here today. The theme for today’s Symposium is “Women of Vision: Leading Transformation in the Workplace.” I am confident that you will gather a wealth of knowledge and learn from some of the best female executives speaking on topics pertinent to today’s women leaders. They will share stories and insights of their personal and professional challenges faced while successfully rising to the top in their respective organizations. I encourage you to take the initiative to meet new colleagues, talk openly about today’s topics and exchange ideas. It is my hope that your experience today is rewarding and allows you to gain some insight to reflect on your own goals and status that will help bring you to the top in your own career development. We sincerely appreciate your attendance today in support of the Women in Leadership Symposium and the Texas Diversity Council. I would like to thank our corporate sponsors, planning committee, program participants, and volunteers for your support and participation. Without each of you, this event would not be a success. 4 We are living and working in interesting times and in an interesting place. The Woodlands, and indeed other portions of Montgomery County, are among the fastest-growing areas in the U.S. That growth represents broadening of cultures and perspectives, and that makes this year’s theme of “Women of Vision: Leading Transformation in the Workplace” a compelling topic. We have assembled a dynamic group of panelists who have graciously agreed to share their stories and best practices for achieving success. Today’s mission is to help encourage women to strategically optimize their talents, resources, network and passion. But, the information shared this morning is not just for women. Whether male or female, you will hear information that applies to all of us as leaders. And, when leaders succeed, our society and businesses flourish. Be prepared to be inspired, and be willing to inspire others. Feel free to take notes on your tablets, mobile phones or notepaper. Today’s event is designed to ignite the potential in all of us and celebrate our commitment to rise above future challenges as a unified community. Thank you for joining us today. We hope you leave inspired and motivated, and we wish you safe travels. My sincerest regards, 5 Panelists Panelists Sallie Rainer Debra F. People who lack selfconfidence struggle to achieve success at work and in their personal life. But the good news is that self-confidence can be learned and developed by following some concrete steps. With the right amount of confidence, people are able to take informed risks and stretch themselves to reach their goals. 10:50 a.m. – 11:10 a.m. Introduction In her latest book, Stop Playing Safe, Margie Warrell argues that we often know what we want to do but fail to do it because of fear of putting our vulnerability on the line. While not particularly fulfilling, we see the status quo as an easier and less scary option. There is proof of this as advances in brain imaging technology show that human beings are wired to avoid risk. It is easier to settle with the status quo than to take courageous action and make a change. But that leaves us with restricted opportunities to develop our potential and achieve our aspirations. Introduction For the first time in history, four generations are working side by side in the U.S. workplace. Each generation, rooted in their era’s historical trends and social forces, brings its own set of values, ethics and styles to the workplace, which has created both challenges and opportunities. 9:15 a.m. – 9:35 a.m. GENDERED LEADERSHIP: HOW TALENTED WOMEN THRIVE Spring Williams – Executive General Manager, UPS Introduction Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce. They start careers in business and other professions with the same level of intelligence, education, and commitment as men. However, according to Catalyst, women in Fortune 500 Companies only make up 16.9 percent of board of directors, 14.6 percent of executives and 4.6 percent of CEOs. There is a significant gap. 9:35 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. 9:55 am. – 10:15 a.m. 11:10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS SESSION 10 PURPOSEFUL LIFE: LIVING AND FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS Elizabeth Campbell – Partner and Chief Diversity Officer, Andrews Kurth LLP Introduction Clarity, focus and direction are essential to understanding what you really want – and to taking the steps to make it happen. Find out what female leaders in today’s workforce have done to achieve their dreams and to create a more successful life of meaning, fulfillment and purpose. GREAT LEADERSHIP: CREATING CHANGE FOR THE BETTER Debra Sukin – Senior Vice President, CHI St. Luke’s Health System Introduction Whether you are a company or an individual going through a transition, change can be difficult. It can also profoundly reduce an organization’s performance and productivity. People need support and guidance when going through major changes, which can range from mergers and acquisitions to transitioning into new leadership positions or changing careers. Great leadership is key to overcoming obstacles and creating transformational change.
