08 SPECIAL ISSUE FIBAAMERICAS.COM 08 Feature Photo: José Jiménez/FIBA Prigioni, key in argentinean reaction Pablo Prignioni: high caliber point guard in Europe and in this tournament. Argentina missed guard Pablo Prigioni in the II Marchand Continental Championship Cup as he was negotiating a deal with real Madrid. After signing the deal, Prigioni reported to the Argentinean team for the FIBA Americas Championship but despite that they had two straight losses, but many adjustments have given them three straight wins. The guard has averages of 11 points and 6.8 assists in five games, where they have won three. In the first win Prigioni led the Argentineans with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. "We turned the situation because with two losses it looked that we were in bad shape and we wouldn't qualify. With these wins we have a foot in Turkey," said Prigioni who will be in Real Madrid for the next two ACB seasons with an option for a third year. In their wins Argentina had a better offensive performance by Paolo Quinteros, Federico Kammerichs, Andrés Pelussi, Leo Gutiérrez and Prigioni who have helped Luis Scola who ended as the MVP of the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. "We are now playing as a team, it is shown in the results, the game, everything. This is not something new," said Prigioni. "It is very important this change in our game that gives us a guarantee in the games that follow," he added. About his expectations with a new team in the ACB, the player is happy for signing with Real Madrid which historically has been one of the main teams in Spain. "There are high expectations, it is a team that has been down for the last 12-15 years. This is a new project and makes everyone dream." In 347 games played, Prigioni averages 6.7 points and 3.7 assists with Fuenlabrada, Alicante and Tau Cerámica since the 1999-2000 season. 2009 FIBA-Americas Championship September 2, 2009 with a foot inside the plane Foto: José Jiménez/FIBA turkey2010.fiba.com Daniel Santiago and Jaime Lloreda look at a loose ball during the first half in the game that Puerto Rico defeated Panama 79-51. The player, born in Ciales on September 4, 1934, was quickly adopted in Ponce and he died there in February 18, 2007 from diabetes complications. He was loved for winning six championships in ten tries with Leones de Ponce in the Superior League. Pachin was the first player who scored 5,000 points in the league in a time when scores were low. he was named MVP twice in 1958 and 1960. He was only 5'8" and a bit chubby but he was a master passing the ball and also scoring with Ponce and the national team from 1954 until 1966. As a player with Kansas State University under coach Tex Winters he was a a key player in the Big Seven Conference as they won the title and reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. In the 1959 FIBA World Championship he was part of the all star team along with Oscar Robertson and Jerry West, Brazilian Amaury Passos and Johnny Baez (Puerto Rico). Before dying, Pachin lost his two legs due to amputation. 13 Charlie Villanueva Pachin Vicens: receives a trophy in the Central American and Caribbean Games celebrated in San Juan. Negative record of the Dominican Republic against Puerto Rico: Before this FIBA Americas Championship, that began on August 26 and ends next Sunday, the Dominican Republic hasn't had luck in the win column, having nine but with 15 losses and never better than sixth place. The Dominicans, who come with Julio Toro as head coach, started their quest for a FIBA World Championship in Mexico City on 1989 with a 5-3 record and sixth place. They defeated the United States 116-108. Then in 1993 in San Juan, they didn't win in four games and ended ninth and the same in Montevideo, 1997, with an 0-4 record. In Neuquen, 2001 they were absent and in 2005 in Santo Domingo they were sixth. Against Puerto Rico they have a 1-2 record, losing in 1983 by the score of 101-73. In 1993 they didn't play and in 1998 they lost 88-85; in 2005 they beat Puerto Rico 89-86. Tonight the stage is set for another game in the World Championship qualifier. Guillermo Diaz also had 12 points in just 14 minutes. Meanwhile Danilo Pinnock led with 23 points but Panama was dominated in the boards 49-35. Head coach Manolo Cintron used his 12 players after he saw his felow countryman, David Rosario, doing the same. The question of this tournament is, who will beat Brazil and when in this FIBA Americas Championship? Yesterday, for fifth game in this in a row in this tournament, they beat Mexico 92-61 as none of their basketball players didn't reach the 20 points but four of them in double digits by moving their roster in the 40 minutes. On July 7, 2009, it was a special day for the Dominican Republic national team because Charlie Villanueva received his local passport. Born in New York on August 24, 1984 he is son of Doris Mejia and Roberto who were born in Santo Domingo. After getting his second nationality, he was certified by FIBA Americas to play in this tournament. He needed that because he played for USA in the FIBA Americas U21 Championship in Halifax along with Chris Paul who is playing for the New Orleans Hornets. He averaged 5 points and 2 rebounds but he shined in UCONN in 2004 where he won the NCAA title. Villanueva, who suffers from alopecia universalis which affects hair growth, was selected by the Toronto Raptors and saw action in 2005-2006 and then played in Milwaukee and finally signed with the Detroit Pistons. He can play forward and center thanks to his 6'11" in height but he can also dribble, he is agile and can shoot from any distance. He also uses a head band to protect his eyes from sweat. Without counting the game against Uruguay, he averages 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds and today he faces Puerto Rico. puertorico2009.FIBAAMERICAs.com 6 3 08 URU 74 BOX SCORE GAME 21 2009 FIBA AMeRICAS Championship MEX 61 Garcia 28 pts 3 Asistencias DOM 80 Quintero 13 pts 3 reb BRA 92 VILLANUEVA 19 Pts 8 reb CAN 51 GAME 23Ω Barbosa 18 pts 1 robo GAME 22 PUR 79 English 17 pts 6 reb GAME 24 Ramos 12 Pts 11 Rebotes ARG 67 PAN 51 Gutierrez 15 Pts 2 reb 4 Pinnock 23 Pts 4 Reb 5 08 URU 74 BOX SCORE GAME 21 2009 FIBA AMeRICAS Championship MEX 61 Garcia 28 pts 3 Asistencias DOM 80 Quintero 13 pts 3 reb BRA 92 VILLANUEVA 19 Pts 8 reb CAN 51 GAME 23Ω Barbosa 18 pts 1 robo GAME 22 PUR 79 English 17 pts 6 reb GAME 24 Ramos 12 Pts 11 Rebotes ARG 67 PAN 51 Gutierrez 15 Pts 2 reb 4 Pinnock 23 Pts 4 Reb 5 08 08 Americas legends Photo: cortesy of El Nuevo Día Puerto Rico even closer to their goal KEy pLAYER Juan “Pachín” Vicens When people talk about basketball in Puerto Rico, even the new generations, know Pachin Vicens because he was the first Puerto Rican player to have great performances on a worldwide stage and was the best player in the 1959 FIBA World Championship played in Chile.
