Smith 1929-1999 Howard M. Smith represented everything that is truly outstanding about the sport of rowing—leadership, dedication, selflessness, and committment. If that weren’t enough, he was one of the finest gentlemen I have met, in or out of the rowing community. At Cornell, Howard stroked the ‘48 and ‘49 varsity eight and participated in the 1952 Olympic trials. Later he coached at Rutgers University for five years. In 1960 he began a long, distinguished carrer as a rowing official. Fortunately, Howard’s employment with duPont brought him and his lovely wife Jean to Wilmington, Delaware—once home to five fledgling rowing clubs in the mid-1870s, but none since then. In 1984, he co-founded the Wilmington Rowing Center in a small auto-body shop on the banks of the forgotten Christina River. Under his faithful guidance, the Center grew and expanded into a two-bay boathouse 10 built on land leased to WRC by the city of Wilmington. This June, the Center purchased and moved into a renovated building at 501 A Street, across from the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association. In 1991, Howard and I co-founded the Diamond State Masters Regatta held on the tranquil waters of Noxontown Pond at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware. Now in its 25th year, Diamond States has become one of the premier Masters regattas in the country. More than 1,000 rowers participate over two days in fifty-five events. In 1999 the regatta was named in Howard’s honor to recognize his many contributions to both Wilmington Rowing and the Diamond State Masters Regatta®. John Schoonover Regatta Director Our Larry... To the Organizers, Competitors, Volunteers and Sponsors: The Willy Foundation is honored and privileged to once again sponsor the Diamond State Masters Regatta. The Foundation was born out of the loss of our youngest son and brother, Willy Shuman. One of the missions of the Foundation is to foster and support scholar/athletes. Willy was a keen competitor on and off the court or field. But, he was equally comitted to sportsmanship, win or lose. In our view, there is no better place to celebrate the scholar/athlete than St. Andrews’s School, which is, of course, the host of the Regatta. To be sure, there are few places more beautiful on which to compete than Noxontown Pond. This event, however, is about you. It is the spirit of competition, comraderie, volunteerism and dedication that has kept the Regatta growing and thriving for over twenty-five years. It is a magnificent thing to see so many men and women of such diverse ages, skill level and backgrounds come together each year and celebrate rowing and crew. We applaud you. This year we lost our eldest son and brother, Wilson. In his time Wilson was both an avid multi-sport athlete, as well as a coach for George Washington High School’s lacrosse team. Like Willy, he shared the same passion for fair play, mentorship and competition. Both of them lived each day like it was their last. That is why events like the Diamond State Masters Regatta are so important. They bring people together to forge indelible memories and enduring friendships under the banner of sport. Such events form a legacy that reaches backwards even as it moves forward. There is no finer sort of tradition. So to the competitiors, the Foundation wishes you the best of luck, good weather and smooth water. To the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers, the Foundation commends you for your service year in and year out. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not say to the St. Andrew’s alumni competitors: Go Saints! Grant P.H. Shuman Chairman of the Board The Willy Foundation, Inc.
