The day of our visit, aesthetician Santi removed hair from the lip area of a member of the Ecru
Lifestyle Beauty team. Motorized chairs reclined almost a full 180° as he talked her through
everything that would happen during the service, making for a comfortable experience. Santi
shared that employees of Browhaus undergo 2-3 months of training to study brow shaping and
stay abreast of the latest trends in fashion to ensure that the looks they create for clients are
always current.

Lifestyle Beauty (LB): How did you get started in the fashion industry?
Kim Phan (KP): I opened Project 159, a boutique in the West Village, New
York in 2004. I experimented by creating a small capsule collection for my
customers. It became a huge hit and my clients wanted more. I never
intended to design an entire collection, it just fell into my lap. Sometimes
you have to just “Go where the wind blows!” (my life motto). When you just
roll with the punches, you never know where life will take you. Things just
naturally fell into place and the line grew organically.

LB: I know you’re the Kim in Yumi Kim, who’s the Yumi? How did Yumi Kim
get its name?
KP: Yumi is my dog. She’s a Yorkie… My Boss Bi#$@!
LB: What is the Yumi Kim brand known for?
KP: Our claim to fame is fun and flirty printed silk floral dresses, rompers,
tops and skirts.
LB: Who is your fashion inspiration?
KP: I have a love for prints and colors. I’m inspired by those who paved the way, designers such as Emilio Pucci, Leonard Paris,
Missoni, Christian Lacroix, and today, Diane Von Furstenberg. She showed us how to incorporate prints and colors in our everyday
lifestyle.
LB: What can we expect from Yumi Kim for the Fall/Winter 2013 season?
KP: Fall/Winter 2013 is influenced by the Mod era. Pieces from shifts dresses to jumpsuits will take center stage,
all made in fun geometric prints and bold colors.
LB: What is your go to look for fall?
KP: Recently I’ve been obsessed with jumpsuits! Rock it with a belt and cute crop jacket and you’re good to go!
LB: What can we expect from Yumi Kim for the Spring/Summer 2014 season?
KP: For this collection, I’m channeling my inner bohemian. Influenced from my recent trip to Mexico, there will be lots of bright
florals, embroidery details, placement prints, and styles with a boho vibe.

LB: Who are some of your clientele?

KP: We’ve been very blessed with being a hit amongst Hollywood’s hottest starlets such as Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens,

LB: What is your proudest fashion moment?
KP: When I opened my first Yumi Kim Shop in the Lower East Side. To this day, I still get giddy and have a “wow” moment when I

2 1/2 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp cornstarch
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp distilled white vinegar
1 large egg
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp red food coloring
3/4 cup white chocolate chips, divided
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a mixing bowl whisk
together flour, cocoa powder, cornstarch, baking powder
and salt, set aside. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer
fitted with paddle attachment, whip together butter, sugar
and vinegar until pale and fluffy, about 3 - 4 minutes. Mix
in egg. Add in vanilla and red food coloring and mix
until blended. With mixer set on low speed, slowly add
in dry ingredients and mix just until combine. Mix in white
chocolate chips (Mix in half of the white chocolate chips
then set aside the other half to press into the tops of the
rolled dough balls so more of them show through when
baking.) Scoop dough out by the heaping tablespoonfuls
and shape into balls. Transfer to parchment paper lined
baking sheets and bake in preheated oven 9 - 11 minutes.
