I have been impressed and inspired by your commitment and dedication. Your educational experience is not ending, but expanding exponentially. The time spent at Haywood Early College as high school students and as college students has given you the ability to reach your loftiest dreams. Do not limit yourselves! Your opportunities are unlimited! Dream big, work hard, and remember that you are prepared and ready for anything. Throughout your school career you have heard about how the choices that you make will affect your future. You have made good choices and you are reaping the benefits of your good choices. On May 13, you will have received a high school diploma, and a two year transferrable degree. The time spent taking community college classes will boost your ability to your four-year degree, Associates of Arts degree, or some of you will earn an advanced degree laden with college course credits. I would like to quote Steve Jobs: “the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things.” I like this quote because you are the change that is coming. Parents, Guardians, Family members: Thank you for supporting your child throughout their school experience. Graduation is a day of celebration and without family it would not be possible. Graduates, make a stand for what is right, make good choices, and go change the world. It has been an honor to serve as your principal this school year. I have truly been blessed. I am so very proud of all of the hard work and dedication that you have exhibited over the last four years on “the hill”. As you well know – we don’t simply hand out high school diplomas. They must be earned – and you have earned yours. Your diploma is not something that you should accept, pack away in a box somewhere, and then forget about. It is a document that carries with it my endorsement as well as the endorsement of more than 100 other Tuscola staff and faculty members who have been a part of your journey. We want you to know that we will remember you. We want you to know that your diploma represents a small part of each of us that you can carry with you. From the bus driver who brought you safely to school for so many years, to the English teacher who helped make poetry meaningful in your life, to the cafeteria lady who served you a warm meal and gave you a smile free of charge every day you ate with us – you carry a piece of each and every one of us on “the hill” that is embedded within the fibers of the diploma that you have earned. While we celebrate, this year, the 50 years that Tuscola High School has served this great community, I hope that you will honor those Tuscola graduates who have come before you. But just as importantly, I encourage you to honor the very meaning of the word “Tuscola” — which can be translated to “digging in many places”, from its Cherokee origin. I often times remind our students and community of the meaning of this word, “Tuscola”, because I believe it truly captures the spirit of the Mountaineer, the one who hunkers down when things gets tough, the one who is not afraid to climb the highest peaks, the one who continually searches and digs to unearth the truth and ensure justice within these hills, hollers and beyond. While the world beyond the Balsams, the high ridges of the Smokies and the Blue Ridge is changing with great speed, I ask that you slow down a bit and remember where you come from and the good people that you represent. You are Tuscola High School’s greatest ambassadors. We send you into the world with your diploma in hand, and with the great hope that you are not only proud to be a Mountaineer, but that you have the courage, resolve, and strength to show others what it means to be one. Continue to blaze the trail for those who will follow. In closing, I know this is a time when people question you about your future: Where will you go? What will you do? What is your plan? These are not simple questions. They require great deliberation and often years to answer. As you ponder these questions, I offer this simple advice: Be you. Take your time. Be good to others. Enjoy the journey. Take care of our environment. When you get stressed out, (and you will), stop and pause and remember that you can do this. We believe in you Mounties. Your new diploma says so.
